Notes for WILLIAM ADDINGTON,SR:
William Addington was born in London, England, and grew up to young
manhood in that city. He had excellent educational opportunities, and in
consequence thereof, acquired a good education. About the time he reached
the age of twenty, a steady stream of emigrants was then flowing from the city
of London and other parts of Great Britain Into the North American
Colonies. Young Addington was also seized with the desire to join the
throng and emigrate to America, much against the wish of his parents.
They tried to dissuade him from going but failed. At length his father,
seeing that he was determined on making the adventure, furnished him with money
to pay his passage overseas and supply his needs for some time afterward.
On landing at Norfolk, he traveled widely through eastern Virginia and North
Carolina, and finally located near Culpepper Courthouse, Va. Here he
married Margaret Cromwell, about the year 1774. When the Revolutionary
War began, William Addington volunteered, and was made a commissary officer in
Washington's Army. He served in this capacity until the Surrender of
Cornwallis at Yorktown, October 19, 1781, an event which he witnessed.
Soon after the War, William Addington moved to Caswell County, N.C.,
where he remained a short time. Hearing of a rich country in southwest
Virginia where the land was good, the range fine, and bear, deer, and wild
turkeys in abundance he decided to seek this wonderful country. In the
summer of 1785, he, in company with twelve other families, come to Russell County,
Virginia where he located in the Vally, north of the mountain, near Hyter's
Gap.

Notes for CHARLES CROMWELL ADDINGTON:
Charles was a boy about eight years old when his father located on the
southwest Virginia frontier. Among the immigrant families from North
Carolina which settled about Hyter's Gap, was one named Doty; Anna, a daughter
of this family, became the wife of Charles on January 2, 1802 and , in April of
the same year, he located on Clinch River, within the present limits of Scott
County, at a place known as the William Gillenwaters farm. This farm that
had about ten acres of cleared land; the river bottoms were wet and
marshy. During his residence there, the family contracted fever and ague,
in consequence of which the location was adjudged unhealthful, and he remover
to Copper Creek in the spring of 1805, where he lived until his death in 1882.

Will of Henry Burke of CAROLINE County, Virginia
In the name of God Amen. The 5 day of April, 1777. I Henry Burk of Carolime
County being sick and weak but in perfect mind and memory thanks to God:
therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing its appointed
once for all men to die, do make and ordain this my last will arid Testament
that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into
the hands of God that give it and my body I recommend to the Earth to be Buried
in Christian decent burial at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named
And as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me
in this life I give, demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and
form. First My desire is that all my just debts be paid as soon as possible
after my Death. I give to my son John Burk two hundred Acres of Land more or
less as I purchased of Fisher together with four Negroes (VIZ) Ben and Lucy his
wife young Lucy and Sukey and their Increase to him and his forever. I
give to my son Thomas Burk Negro Anaba and Amhrose (as he has sold) together
with Gilbert and Rose and their increase to him and his heirs forever. But in
case any debts should come against my estate from son Thomas Burk as I
was security for him then the said Thomas Burks Negroes Gilbert and Rose is to
be sold to pay those debts as it is not my desire that the rest of my children
shall suffer on that account. I give to my son Henry Burk's
children VIZ John Burk seventy Pounds Current money as my son John Burk is to
pay to the said John Burk son of my son Henry Burk for the consideration of two
hundred acres Land as he my son John is to have pos-session of at my death
which land I purchased giving to the said John my son Henry's son. Likewise I
give to Ann Burk my son Henry's Daughter two Negroes (VIZ) Sarah and Fanney and
their increase to her and her heirs forever. I lend to my daughter Judith
Hundley four Negroes (VIZ) Phillis, Esther, young Jack and Mary and their
increase during her natural life and after her decease to her children as she
had by George Prddie to be equally divided amongst them to them and their heirs
forever. I lend to my daughter Ann Burton four Negroes (VIZ) Old Jack'
Charlotte, Glocester, Rachel and their increase during her natural life &
after her death to be equally divided amongst all my children hereafter named
to them and their heirs forever. I give to my daughter Elizabeth Cross four
Negroes Hannah, Milley, Edmund & Amy & their increase to her and her
heirs forever. I give to my daughter Jane Southworth four Negroes (VIZ) Daphmy,
Mingo, James and Peg and their Increase to her and her heirs forever. My desire
is that all my Personal estate be sold and equally divided among all my
Children (VIZ) John Burl; Thomas Burl; Judith Hundley, Ann Burton, Elizabeth
Cross and Jane Southworth, & my son Henry Burk's children (VIZ) John Burk
and Ann Burk is likewise each of them to have an equal part of my personal
estate to them and their heirs forever. I hereby constitute and appoint my son
John Burk and my son in law Joseph Cross, Execu-tors of this my last will and
testament whereby revoking all other will or wills as witness my hand and seal
the day and day before written.

In the name of God Amen of Twentieth
Day One thousand Seven hundred & Seven.
I John Burke of Caroline County & Parish of Saint Margarets being infirm
but of perfect mind & memory praised be God for the same and calling to
mind the mortality of my Body and knowing it is 'appointed for all once to Die

here after mentioned Nothing Doubting but at the General Recuition I shall
receive the same again by the mighty Power of God, and am Touching such worldly
Estate wherewith it Hath Pleased God to Bless me with in this life I Give &

payd by my Executors out of my Estate.
Item: I Give to my son Henry Burke all my land I hold in Albermarle County as
also twelve Negroes mentioned by names, viz: Daniel, Win, Harry, Suckey &
her four children, Elick & Dicas, Lucy & her young child & Phillis
to him and his heirs if any lawfully begotten and is not to bring any claims
against my Estate. I also Give him all the stock of horses Cattle hogs
house-hold furniture, towels, the crops of all kinds on the land if it should
so happen that I dye before the crop is wade as also one Feather bed and Furniture
belonging to my Estate in this County the sd Bed which Bed is to be not the
best or the worst but about the middle sort & if the said Henry Burke dyes
without heir then it is to return to his Brother Thomas Burk and his heirs, nor
Henry Burk is not to pay anything I have left charged against him.
As all so the said Negro Dinah and I have lent to the said Caty after her
decease to return to my son Henry & his heirs as also one hundred current
money is to be paid to him out of my debts, Viz: I give to my son Thomas Burke
all my land I hold in Caroline County as also fourteen Negroes mentioned by
names, viz: Jeane, Miney, Grace & Charles, Giles, Juda, Rubin, Gilburt,
Sebeny, Prosper, Beck & her three children, viz: a Milly &c: to him and
his heirs if any lawfully begotten & is not to bring any claim against my
Estate nor to pay anything of any charged by me against him as also the stock
of all kinds and household furniture in Caroline County, except one Bed and
furniture that my son Henry is to have & I lend to Caty Troulk Sukey &
Dina & a Good feather Bed and furniture and one hundred acres of land and
the house where I formerly lived for her natural life if she continues to live
on that land and then Suckey to return to my son Thomas or Tommy Burke and his
heirs as also the said hundred acres of land & what I have lent to her and
what I shall hereafter mention that is I shall direct that the said Thomas
shall fund the said City a Horse or mare & a cow or two and the first year
four hundred weight Pork and six barrels corn, viz:
I lend to Betty Gatewood twelve negroes and after her decease I give them and
their increase to he equally divided amongst all her children, viz:
Joe. Ben, Jolley, Pal, James, Fildy, Chaney, Blanch, Robinson, old Lucy, and
her daughter Lucy, Amey. I appoint Henry Burk and Thomas Burk my two sons
Executors to this my last will and Testament this 31 day January, 1788, as also
all the Rest of my Estate Both real and Personal besides wats mentioned I give
my son Thomas or Tomey Burk this 31 day January, 1788.

Notes for THOMAS BURK,SR.:
Willed by his father four Negro slaves, two of which he had already sold,
prior to his fathers death. The other two slaves Gilbert and Rose were
his providing he had not made any debts against his father's estate, if so
these two slaves were to be sold to pay these debt's. (See More About Henry

The fathers Personal estate was to be sold and divided among his
children with some grand children sharing as children.

Notes for FLEMING BURK,SR.:
Fleming came to Russell CO. Va. around 1794-95, based on the birth of
his second child in 1794-95 in Russell Co. and a 1794 deed in Georgia.
Flemming appears on a 1797 Personal Property list in Russell CO., but the first
land purchase was in 1880, 50 acres on Ceder Creek from Charles and Mary
Cromwell. He purchased additional 148 acres from Samuel Ewing in
1804. In 1809 he purchased 185 additional acres adjoining his land
on Ceder Creek from his brother Henry Burk. In 1811, he purchased 300
acres from Robert McReynolds, this land also on Ceder Creek. Russell County,

Betsy which reads I liberate, manumit, and forever set free my Negro

I also give him and his family the privilege of using water out of the spring near my dwelling house in the same manner that they have heretofore had that privilege, so long as they may desire the same so as not to injure any property on the place in procuring the water; and I also give him and his family the privileges of hauling timber from his or their land through the tract of land and plantation I now live on, so as not to injure my crop that may be growing on the plantation at the time. Will of Thomas H. Burke of Caroline County, Virginia
I Thomas H. Burke of the County of Caroline and State of Virginia do
make this my last will and testament herby revoking all other wills by me
heretofore made, in manner and form following, to-wit:
First: After the payment of my just debts and funeral expenses I
loan to my wife Susan E. K. Burke all of my estate both real and personal to do
as she pleases with so long as she remains my widow should my said wife marry
then it is my wish that she should have one third of my estate during her
natural life and her decease to go to my children.
Second: I leave my said friend Hill Johnes choice of my horsed and
my new saddle and bridle.
Lastly, I leave my said wife Susan E> K. Burke my sole Executrix (
and it is also my wish that no security shall be required by the court) to this
my will this twenty third day December 1828. Given under my hand and

House on Monday the 8th day of June 1829:
A writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Thomas H.
Burke was produced in court and being proved by the oaths of Elisa Washington
and William F. G. Garnett two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be
Recorded. On the motion of Susan Burke sole executrix named in said will,
who made oath thereto and entered into and acknowledged to a bone in the
penalty of $20,000, conditioned according to law, Certificate is granted the
said Susian for obtaining a probate of said will in due form.
