Descendants of Alexander Joyce
1. ALEXANDER1 JOYCE was born 1715 in Guilford County North Carolina, and
died 05 March 1778 in Guilford Co. NC. ,
Now Rockingham Co.. He
married (1) SARAH AUSTIN Abt. 1739 in North Carolina, daughter of RICHARD AUSTIN. She was born Abt. 1720 in Virginia, and
died Bef. May 1758 in Gulford County North Carolina. He married (2) JANE HAMILTON 19 May 1758 in PRINCE EDWARD CO. Virginia, daughter
of ALEXANDER HAMILTON and ESTHER. She was
born 1740 in Va., and died Bef. 1804 in Guilford Co. NC..
Notes for ALEXANDER JOYCE:
Alexander and Brother
Thomas Joyce bought land in Rockingham County N. C. on the Mayo River, many of
their descendents moved to Stokes County.
Alexander And Thomas both had a son John among others. After their death the land was left to
their sons John. Since there were
now two John Joyce's living in the same area , in order to differentiate
between these two first cousins, we find in the court minutes that one was
identified as John Joyce (Coon) and one as John Joyce (Possum). The Joyce Cemetery in Rockingham county
is referred to as Possum Joyce Cemetery.
One stone has the birth and death dated that correspond with family
records of John Joyce, son of Alexander.
From this we conclude that John Possum was the son of Alexander.
1790 Stokes County NC. Census shows three Joyce families
1) Alexander with 9 in
the family including wife and himself, plus 3 slaves.
2) Isaacs with 4 in
the family including wife and himself ,plus 2 slaves.
3) George with 6 in
the family including wife and himself , no slaves.

Notes for JOHN RUFUS JOYCE:
A big rough red faced man, with a
violent temper. A head full of
reddish brown hair, thought to be Irish decent. He was known to
be the best timber cutter, as well as a farmer and a family man. He used a double blade ax, and could
fall a large tree in less time than any man in that part of the country. It was said on one occasion his ax hit
a knot glanced off and split his knee through to the bone. He sent someone to his house to fetch
him a sewing needle and thread, sat on a stump, sewed up his knee himself,
wrapped his knee in a burlap sack soaked in gum oil finished his days work,
never saw a doctor , did not believe in them.
He walked with a limp and carried a big
stick, he had a large farm on Smith Ridge, built two cabins on either end of the
land for his two wives, Nancy Jane Smith and Mary Jane (nick name Molly)
Houchins. He fathered children by
both women. He was only
married to the one Mollie Houchins.
Records ( Pension
Application dtd. 1917 ) shows Rufus was 16 at the time of joining the
Confederate Army, in spring of 1863. He served under a Captain Bob Dalton, in
the 3rd Battalion N.C. Company "C". He joined in Patrick County North
Carolina. The record shows two commanders who served in the same unit as De Kalb
Mabe of Stokes N.C. and William Henery Shetton also of Stokes.
Roster of Confederate
Soldiers, made by S.A. Lard 1/25/1898 Maiden Springs District shows J.R. Joyce
3rd Battalion as
serving 2 years and was Captured and Imprisoned

Nickname: John Rufus
Went by the name Rufus
Occupation: Farmer
Notes for NANCY JANE SMITH:
It is said Nancy was never married to
John Ruf, and her children by him kept her last name of Smith. The other family used the name Joyce.
The two women were friends, mid
wife for each other, helped each other can up the fruits and vegetables for
winter, was friends to the end, so were the children until they grew up then
the Smith children resented the Joyces'.
The description we got of Nancy was
when she was in her 90's. She was
a little lady , white hair, wore a long dress with button shoes, a apron with
pockets ,where she kept her corn cob pipe, and tobacco. When she smoked her pipe her nose and
chin would almost touch. She
laughed and talked all the time, she never stopped whether any one was
listening or not . She loved music and dancing, when the Bango was played she
would lift her dress above her ankles, and shuffle her feet ,it would tickle
her so. This description of Nancy
came from my mother Etta Faye Joyce.

Notes for MARY JANE FRANCIS HOUCHINS:
One description we got of Molly was when
she was around 87 years old. At
that time she was a small skinny woman with a large hump on her back, her hair
was thin and white,( could see her scalp). Large blue
veins on her hands, her eyes red and teary. She had a loud shrill voice, probably couldn't hear, she
screamed at you, couldn't walk alone but sat with a big crude cane. This does not do justice to Molly (As
her photo shows) as no doubt in her younger days she was a attractive , small ,
hard working woman, that could keep up with the best of them.
Another account we have of Molly
is told by Lydia Mae (Whitt) Joyce. Which goes as following.
Molly was very high spirited and
mean. She would get mean with
Rufus and he would whip her with a switch as he would with a child. Molly would stay at different family
members. She would get real mean
and cantankerous to the point she would wear out her welcome as old timers
would say. She had got mad at
Rhoda her daughter in law and went to stay with her grand-daughter Agnes. While staying there, (Lydia Mae was
visiting at the time). Molly
became angry with Agnes and told Lydia "get me a knife and I will just cut
my throat." Lydia went to the
knife drawer and picked up an old dull case knife. She handed it to Molly. Molly looked at the knife for a moment, then looked up at
Lydia saying, you know that knife is too dull to do anything with, then smiled.
Lydia said " I don't think Molly was bitter, but just had a cantankerous
personality."

born 1877.
Notes for JOHN RUFUS SMITH:
This story told by Hufford Joyce, related to the Murder of John Rufus
Smith. Hufford witnessed the
shooting. It seams that some
men were following John Rufus Smith in their car. When he pulled over, they shot him first in the arm that he
shot with, he having a pistol in his hand, he was trying to raise his arm with
the other hand to shoot back when he was shot again. Hufford being there (14 years old) grabbed John Ruf's gun
and ran. As he ducked around
a corner of a building, the men were shooting at him, shooting a hole in his
shirt tail. He testified at the
trial and his shirt was used as evidence.
His testimony was responsible for the conviction of the killer.

Notes for OSCAR JOYCE:
JOYCE VICTIM OF BRUTAL
MURDER, SHOT THROUGH HEAD BY MOONSHINER Richlands, July 30 1925. Oscar Joyce died Sunday July 26th in a very lonely
spot far back in the
forest recesses near Glenburke, after living for two hours with almost a half
of his head torn away by the passage of a bullet fired from a .30 calibre high
powered rifle, being the second victim of a brutal murder within the past month
in that section of Tazwell and Buchanan counties. A party of five officers and
their deputies were searching the hills for Walter Strouthe, alleged murderer,
but up until Wednesday he had not been found.
The story about the above shooting was
told by Lydia Maye Whitt as following
It seems blackberries were ripe and Rachel and Rhoda (wives of Robert
Henry and Oscar Joyce) were going blackberry picking. Oscar and Robert told their wife not to go down to a certain
spot because Walt Strouth was making liquor down there. Well, both wives were head strong and
went there picking berries anyway.
It seems that they were shot at.
Both the women were determined not to tell their husbands because they
would go after the men who shot at them.
Instead of telling their husbands, they told George Stephenson. Well George didn't keep it to
himself. He told Oscar and
Robert. They got there guns and
went to the place their wives had been shot at. It seems that there were bad blood between Walt Strouth and Bob
from previous incidents, almost a feud.
When the two, Oscar and Bob, got near the place were the women were shot
at, Walt Strouth shot Oscar instead, thinking it was Bob.

smiled you could see two gold
crowns on his eye teeth. Every one
was afraid of him, always carried a pistol and a flask of whiskey. Killed at least two men in his time one
being the sheriff of that area, Chap Osborne.
The cause of Cliff's death has been
explained by various stories, but the one
that has repeated most
often is as following. Cliff was making moonshine, who ever was
helping him had left to get more grain, a seed had gotten stuck in the steels
coil and blew up. Every one had
gotten out of the house safe however ,Cliff was fighting the fire with a water
hose ,and was burned in the process.
Hattie remembered some money they had hidden in a coffee can in the
kitchen, she went back to get the
money, which she did but her dress caught on fire and was burned badly. Cliff's burn wounds would not have been
fatal, except he was a diabetic, and his wounds would not heel.

Notes for LILLIE MAY COLLINS:
Lillie May is the one
who has given us a account of her parents and brother and sisters, to her
daughter Etta Faye Joyce. Lillie
May had reddish brown hair. She was plump, short and small boned.
She seemed always sad and filled with a bitterness from a life that was
hard. It left her unable to love
or express affection. She lost
trust for life, the people around
her including her children. Much
of the mistrust came from the hardships as a child and years of a marriage to
William Clifton Joyce, a marriage filled with trouble, and eventually divorce.
