          P. 137/9: Orange County Public Service Claims, Revolutionary War:

               P. 137    "At a court held by the Justices of Orange County Court, at the Courthouse,

                   on the first, second, third, fifteenth, sixteenth, twenty-sixth and

                   twenty-seventh days of April, 1782. For adjusting the claims made to the

                   said Court, agreeable to an Act made and passed the last session of Assembly,

                   Intitled an Act 'For adjusting claims for property impressed or taken for

                   public service'. The following claims were allowed to be just and reasonable."

               P. 166     Will of Thomas Burrus, 2 Oct., 1788, of county of Orange and Parish of

                   St. Thomas. Mentions Grandson Thomas Burrus, son of Thomas Burrus; gives and

                   bequeaths to his daughter, Sarah Tribble one negro girl named Agnes, et cet.;

                   mentions his daughter Francis Tandy Bush; and to his beloved wife Francis

                   (Tandy) leaves his estate real and personal. This will was presented in

                   Court in Orange County on Monday, 23 Mar., 1789, by Francis Burrus, Henry

                   Tandy and Thomas Burrus, executors.

               P. 161     Will of Jacob Burras ("I, Jacob Burroughs", but signed "Jacob Burras"

                   in presence of wife "Mary Burrus") 20 March, 1742, of Parish of St. Margaret's

                   and County of Caroline Va., mentions wife Mary, and son Thomas. Latter

                   received 273 acres, part of 400 acres granted to Jacob Burras by letters

                   patent 15 March, 1735, lying on North side of Hickory Creek in Hanover County.

                   This will filed in suit in Louisa County in April-May, 1767, of Davis vs.

                   Burrus.

          All the foregoing signed a deed Jan. 25, 1823, to Joseph Hume, conveying land they had inherited

          from their Uncle Ambrose, and seem to have left Virginia, en masse except Thomas, who died not

          long after in Orange Co., Va.

 

          James Clark's will is in Book C., p. 342, Culpeper Co., Va., date June 7, 1789, proven Sept. 21,

          1789. In this will he lends to wife for 10 years a tract of land in Orange Co., Va., and "This tract of

          land I now live on in Culpeper Co." He appointed his wife and brothers William and Joseph

          executors. The plantation in Orange Co., was about three miles from the town of Orange on the road

          to Madison Mills; the other in Culpeper Co., now Madison, on the south side of the Robertson River,

          and apparently including the present village of Locustdale. Immediately south of this Madison

          Plantation was that of his brother, William; Rueben's plantation was near Culpeper. John was south of

          the Rapidan, east of the present village of Rapidan.

 

          Capt. James Clark served in the Revolution from Culpeper Co.

 

                                     WILLIAM READ SMOOT

 

          William Read Smoot, the son of George and Anne (Beale) Smoot, was born in St. Mary County,

          Maryland about 1767. He went to Virginia with his brothers and on May 31, 179 in Madison County

          he secured a license to marry Frances Clark, the daughter of Capt. James and Mary (Marston)

          Clark.

 

          The 1810 census for Franklin County, Kentucky shows William Read Smoot as head of a family with

          a wife, six young children and five slaves. In 1820, he had ten childre?? at home, but had no slaves,

          and was engaged in agriculture. In 1840, he was listed fo?? the first time as Reed Smoot. Children of

          William Read (Reed) and Frances (Clark) Smoot:

 

               1.  William Smoot, 1800-1843, married Martha Marston, daughter of William Marston,

                   in Owen County, Kentucky on June 23, 1826.

               2.  George Smoot, 1801-1883, married Dorothy Dennis, 2nd wife Jane Goodrich.

               3.  Letitia Smoot, born 1805, married John Clements Nov. 16, 1821, Owen Co.

               4.  Mary Smoot married Ebenezer Wallace Aug. 12, 1824.

               5.  Reed Smoot, 1811-1873, married Harriett Claxon, Jan. 10, 1835, in Owen Co.

                   To Pope County, Illinois in 1840's.

               6.  Nancy Smoot married 1. Noel Smither; 2. ? Hall.

               7.  Daniel Smoot

               8.  John Smoot

               9.  Druzilla Smoot married Pleasant Bush, May 29, 1839, Owen Co.

              10.  Thomas Smoot, born 1822, married 1st, Mary Smoot, daughter of William and
