České osady v Americe, 1886
(Czech Settlements in
America, 1886)
This book, available here free in PDF format, is accessible by clicking the link below. I received a photo copy of this book in 2000 from my friend, Karel Kyslika, who lives in Napajedla, Czech Republic (near Zlin). I hope someone with the ability to do so will translate the document and allow me to post the translation here, too.
The value of the booklet to historians and genealogists becomes obvious after a short perusal of it. Even to those with limited or no Czech reading ability, a good Czech-English dictionary will give you a good deal of useful information about the conditions in America in EVERY Czech community in 1886. I have seen advertisements for this book in the middle 1880s in the Texas-published SVOBODA, a Czech language weekly newspaper, published from 1886 until 1926 in LaGrange, Texas.
České osady v Americe lists every known Czech community in the United States in 1886, as well as information about each such location, including land prices per acre and other costs of living, political information, and even a contact name for a Czech immigrant already living in the community. In addition to the list, which is by state, then county, then community/town, there is lots of narration concerning the climate, industry, politics, and other information that would be of interest to those in the Czech Lands considering emigration to the USA. Karel Kysilka referred to this booklet as sort of an "Immigrant's Guidebook." I hope you enjoy it.
