Record by Murray Slipp Thomson,
Saint John West, NB (annotated in blue scrip)
On lot 9, in Central Hampstead, between
Highway 102 and the west bank of the River Saint John, is the Palmer Family
Cemetery. Seventy-two people are known to be buried there, with thirty-five
tombstones and five unmarked graves. It can't be seen from either
the highway or the river, but can be seen clearly from the north kitchen
window of the ten room Palmer homestead built in 1835, after the Loyalist
log cabin burned. It is a well kept cemetery.
There are four United Empire Loyalist known
to be buried there:
William Lawrence 1739 - 1809 has
a field stone.
Marcus Palmer, Sr. 1767 - 1822
Mrs. Marcus Palmer - Ann Slocum 1771
- 1848
Lambert Stockford b. 1772 is in an
unmarked grave.
It is extremely probable
that another Loyalist is buried there, but there is no record there of
her grave. Where else could Mary, the mother of Marcus Palmer and
widow of William Lawrence be buried? Six of the seven sons of the Loyalist
Nancy Ann Slocum and Marcus Palmer are buried in the family cemetery. The
identical tombstones of three of the brothers make a striking outline against
the sky.
PALMER Daniel
Stephen Marcus, Jr.
1798-1867 1802-1872
1793-1873
In his will, Stephen
Palmer set a half acre aside as a cemetery with access to it at all times.
The tombstones and records of people buried here are arranged alphabetically.
