Thank-you for visiting our website researching the names Dand, Munro (Munroe) and Spencer on our grandfather's side, James Albert Dand and also on are grandmother's side, Mary Jane Dunne, the families of Dunne and Hewson.
James' father Mungo Dand arrived in Canada as a baby with his parents William Robertson Dand and Marion (Wright) Dand along with three other children from Fowlis Easter, Perthshire, Scotland. William and Marion had settled northwest of Feversham in Osprey township in Grey County, Ontario with six more children being born in Canada. Mungo had two wives being widowed with his first wife Catherine Munro, later to be remarried to Anne Marie Spencer. Catherine died the same day giving birth to their fifth child. The infant, Mungo C.A., died 11 weeks later. Mungo also had five children with Anne Marie with James Albert Dand, our grandfather, being the oldest of Mungo's second family.
Mary Jane's father and mother were Robert Dunne and Lydia Hewson from Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. Family tradition has it that Lydia Hewson is a direct descendant of Colonel John Hewson, originally a cobbler from Westminster who elevated the ranks of Oliver Cromwell's "New Model Army" although the genealogy record has not established the connection. It is known for sure the property he acquired for his part in the invasion of Ireland in 1649 is still in the Hewson family to this day.

It was our main intent putting up this site on the web to discover the identity of these people. Some of the photos are known to have been taken at Collingwood in Simcoe County, Ontario which was the main trading centre for Osprey Township. The summer of 2002 was a special time for me and many other family members. We held a family reunion on the farm that James and Mary raised their family near Coleville Saskatchewan. |
