James Daniel (Daniell) was born between 1838 and 1842 to Jessie Daniell Auston and Mary Ann Tucker. He could have been named James Robert after a sibling that died early in life. They lived in Baldwin County, Georgia. James first married Francis (Fannie) Pugh and had three children. The children included: Jessie born in Dec. 31, 1866, Charlie Newton born Jan. 1, 1869, and Hattie born in 1873.
Oral history is that the first wife of James was wealthy and her family did not like James because he was not well off. After having 3 children with Fannie, James went out to cut wood and kept walking never to return (this would be either 1873 or 1874). On the 1880 census Fannie is alone with the 3 children and listed as widowed, however, James did have another wife and more children.
James moved to Alabama and married again. He had three more children including Johnnie Benjamin born July 23, 1882 who married Sallie Driskill, Stella who married George Adam Bishop, and Etta who married Seaborn David Culpepper.
According to Julia Bishop, James told people that Charlie Newton was his nephew but on his death bed he admitted that Charlie Newton was a son from his first marriage.
In 1914, while living in Worth County, James died. In 1916 S. Francis Pugh filed a widow's pension application. James' Confederate Service in Company A, Phillip's Legion, Cavalry, Milledgeville, Georgia is documented in the pension application.
