The Will of Thomas Cherry 1768

Norfolk County, Virginia
April 17, 1748

In the Name of God Amen I Thomas Cherry of Norfolk County being perfect in Sense and memory blessed be God for it I thought fitt to make this my last Will and Testament in Manner & form following Imprimis I give and bequeath my Soul to God my Maker & to his only Son Jesus Christ my redeemer hoping through the Merits of his person to enjoy eternal Life when he shall see fit to take me to his Mercy where I hope to be received in the happy Company of the Saints and Angells and there to remain in Unity, peace and Friendship for Ever and my Body to be buried in Christian & Distion Manner according to the discretion and order of my Executrix hereafter named and as for my worldly Estate I am at present possessed [?] with I give and bequeath as followeth -

Item I give to my Son Jeremiah Cherry the plantation I now live on including one hundred Acres of Land to a Division already made to him and his heirs for Ever and the half of one hundred Acres and twenty five of Land I bought of Marmaduke Etheridge senr to him and his heirs for Ever and a Negro Man named Anthony to him and his heirs for Ever, and Gun & sword and the half of my hand Mill and the next Child my Negro woman - Lydia shall bring that lives to a year old to him & his heirs for Ever and if they that has the Negro woman at that time refuse to lett the Child go then I give him the Negro Woman & they to have the Child -

Item I give to my son William Cherry the plantation where he now lives being seventy five acres of Land and the other half of the hundred and twenty five acres which I give to my son Jeremiah and to him and his heirs for Ever and my Negro woman called Lydia to him and his heirs for Ever and one Gun & the half of my hand Mill -

Item I give to my Daughter Sarah Brown at the death of her husband John Brown the plantation and Land I bought of Marmaduke Etheridge Junr being 63 Acres of Land to her and her heirs for Ever and if she dies without heirs lawfully begotten of her Body then the Land to go to Jeremiah Cherry and his heirs for Ever and I give her one Negro Boy named Codgo and if she dies without heirs lawfully begotten of her body then I give the Boy to my Son William Cherry & his heir for Ever - Item I give my daughter Mary Tart my Negro Boy named Robin during her life and at her Death to her Daughter Sarah Tart and her heirs for Ever and I give my Daughter Mary one feather Bed -

Item I give my Daughter Martha Foreman and her heirs for ever the half of my Land on the North side of deep Creek and a Negro Girl named Louvina to her and her heirs for Ever and one trunk covered with Leather -

Item I give to my daughter Faith Cherry the other half of my Land on the North side of Deep Creek to her and her heirs for ever and a Negro girl named Nan to her and her heirs for Ever and her Mother's Chest and one trunk covered with leather and one feather bed and some furniture one Iron pot, six pewter plates Two pewter Dishes - Item All the rest of my Estate which is moveable within and without I give amongst all mny Children not to be sold but to be equally divided amongst them and I do appoint my two Sons Jeremiah Cherry and William Cherry my Executrix of this my last Will and Testament disanulling all other Wills made be ne before Whereunto I sett my hand and Seal this 17th day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and forty Eight -
