Notes: The bondsmen for his marriage to Salley Morris were William Davis (could it have been William Dorris) and M. Hart. Thomas birth date is estimated based on the 1850 Caswell County, NC census. His death date is estimated based on his will. On 24 July 1855, Thomas signed his will, which can be found in the North Carolina Archives.

A Jemima Rice b. 7-3-1829 d. 5-21-1866 is listed with other Rice family members in Ephesus Cemetery. Is this Nathaniel's first wife? Did he marry again? Is Isaac a child by Nanny?

Jemima: That this Jemima Rice was born and died on these dates is not confirmed. The Jemima Rice listed in Ephesis Cemetery fits well. Confirm, if possible.

Eli: Eli Compton had a son named Walter in the 1880 census. Walter was 9 years old, b. ca 1871. He is too old to be the son of Mary J. In Ephesus Cemetery, there are two tombstones listing women are consorts of Eli Compton: Elizabeth J. Compton, consort of Eli Compton, b. 11-8-1848 and d. 8-7-1876 (This must be the mother of Walter.) and Mary J. Compton b. 3-10-1853 d. 12-2-1883. An Eli Compton served in Company I, 5th TN Infantry, in the CSA.

Nathan: A John Massee, age 74, lived at household 1993, near Nathan Massey at household 1976. Could he be Nathan's father? John's wife is Nancy, age 65. Also, a John Massey, age 53, is living with Nathan and Mary in the 1850 census. A Massey GenForum entry says that John Massey is the father of Nathan Massey.

James: In the 1850 Carroll County, TN census, James was living with his brother Nathaniel and his wife Jamima. A James Rice served in the Civil War with Co. K, 19th/20th Cav., CSA. It is not for certain that it is this James.

Narcissa: In 1900, a Narcissa Massy is living next door to 73 year old Martha Massy. Both are widowed. Narcissa is listed as having 2 children, both living. She has is her household 19 year old Thomas E., 14 year old Odor, and 12 year old Albinos.

N. died 1917, buried: Massey Cemetery, Carroll County, TN. At this point, this child is unconfirmed. I have not found W. H. H. in the 1880 census yet. W. N. is buried in the same cemetery and in the same area as Thomas E. Massey, who is a confirmed son. Continue to work on this.

Eula: Eula is not yet confirmed as his wife. She is listed next to him on the cemetery list. Need to confirm with more census searches.

Bedda: In the 1850 Carroll County, TN census, Bedda and her children lived next door to Nathan Massey and his wife Mary Brown Massey.

A. John Brown #11111 b. ca 1833, Caswell County, NC, m. E. J. Carnes #12843, b. ca 1836, TN. John died bef 1891. In 1859, lived in Carroll Co, TN. In the 1850 census of Carroll County (p. 295), he was 17. In Caswell County, NC court case, Whitsett et al vs N. L. Brown et al, Oct. 1, 1891, reported that John Brown had two children, J.T. Brown and Mrs. Crutchfield and that he was dead by 1 OCT 1891. John was living with his mother in the 1870 Carroll County, TN census. In the 1880 census, he is listed with his wife E. J., a child J.T.L. (age 1) and his mother-in-law Sallie Carnes.

B. Bedford Brown #11112 b. ca 1835, NC, m. 30-DEC-1858, in Carroll County, TN, Mary A. Brown #11128, b. ca 1843. Bedford died bef 1889. In 1850 census he was with his father and was 15 years old. In both 1850 and 1860 he resided in Carroll County, TN. The same court suit discussed under older brother John reported that Bedford had nine children and was dead by 1891. In the 1880 census, it looks like he is listed with wife N. A. age 30. Did he marry a second time, or is this actually Mary A.? The children #2 through #10 are mentioned in the Nathan Brown estate. They don't match exactly the children in the census. No 1880 census has been located.
