Court held at Boston the 23rd of the 5th mo. l655, there being a petition preferred by Mr. Deane Winthrop, Mr. Thomas Hinckley and divers others for a plantation upon the River that runs from Nashua into Merrimack call- ed Petapaway and another from some of the inhabitants of Concord for a plantation in the same place to both of which the Court returned this answer: "That the Court thinks meet to grant the petitioners 8 miles square in the place desired to make a plantation henceforth to be called Groaten". A document dated Oct. l659 shows that the plantation had been approved for the comfortable existence of 60 families, at least, and the "old planters, those with lst rights to the land, were John Tinker of Lancaster, MA Richard Smith, perhaps of Sudbury, William Martin, Richard Blood and John Lakin". The list of the original proprietors includes: Richard Blood, 60 acre right; Robert Blood, 20 acre right; James Blood, 20 acre right." _________________________________________________________ Surname: BLOOD Source: "The Groton MA family of Richard Blood, Robert Blood and Mary Blood" by Elinor Skeate: email listed below. "The largest proprietor and one of the lst petitioners of Groton, MA was Richard BLOOD prob. b. in Ruddington Nottinghamshire, ENG abt l6l7 and who arrived in N.E. by l642. He was said to be brother of James Blood and Ellen (Harrison) Blood of St. Peters, Nottingham, ENG and then of Concord, MA. The date of his birth comes from a deposition he made in l660 when he claimed to be 43 years of age. He was in Lynn MA abt l648 as were several other early proprietors of Groton. A man of importance and wealth he held a 60 acre share of Groton rights. His sons also held their own shares making this family the most powerful one in the frontier town of Groton. He served as one of the lst selectmen of the town, a job which he held off and on during the many years he lived at Groton. The name of Richard Blood's wife, Isabel (Wilkinson) Blood has been traced to her birth Dec. 23, l62l Nottingham, ENG dau of Henry and Mary (Watkinson) Wilkinson. She was a neice or cousin of H. Wilkinson who mentioned her in his will. She sur- vived her husband, who d. l683 and d. sometime before l706 when her son petitioned the courts to sell his mother's land. Author's note: Introduction: The old Burying Ground in Groton is situated very near the site of the second meeting house, which was begun in the year l680. The ground has prob. been used contuously for burial pur- poses since l678 the date of the resettlement of the town after it had been burned by the Indians. (snip) It contains three acres. The oldes monument is in memory of James Prescott who d. May 9, l704 son of Jonas Prescott, a blacksmith who procured a rough stone and chiselled the inscription himself with one of his own tools Headboards may have been used before this time but in a few years these would decay and disappear. It is likely that the earliest graves were not marked either by wood or stone.
