These families were listed on the 1880 census of Cherokee Co, AL:

Tanner, Sarah A 40 born AL
" Frank N 18 "
" John Robert 16 "
" Fannie 13 "
" Bennie 10 "
" William 8 "
" Samuel 5 "

Listed on the same page and two houses away was another TANNER family:

Tanner Willy 45 born GA
Martha 46 " AL

James 18 " "
Eliza Jane 14 " "
Nada 12 " "

Also in the same area was one more TANNER family:

Tanner, Marion 26 AL
Roberts, Caroline 26 AL
Tanner, William 10 AL

All the men and boys old enough to work are listed as working in 'coaling'. I believe they were working in the Charcoal Pits, possibly those owned by Will Smith. I am searching for information on as many Tanner families as possible from the NE Alabama and NW Georgia area. By gathering this information I am hoping to learn the ancestry of my great grandfather John Thomas TANNER. He has also been listed as 'John R' and 'John Robert' if he is the person listed in the first household above. John died in Talladega Co, AL, Feb 5, 1913 and is buried in the Alpine Church Cemetery with his wife JoAnna JOHNSON, his mother Adeline, his brothers Ben and Samuel. I believe Adeline is the Sarah A. listed in the first household. I have believe her maiden name is JOHNSON and in searching for that I found: Sarah Adalene Johnson married Silas Tanner in Polk Co. GA on July 5, 1860.

Also discovered is a widow's pension application filed in Texas for this same Adeline Tanner listing her husband as Silas Tanner and stating he fought in the 1st Alabama Cavalry of the Union Army. This application was made in 1896 and states Silas died in 1875. Wittnesses were Charley and Fannie Lester. This is possibly the same Fannie listed on the 1880 Cherokee Co census in the household of Sarah A Tanner. All information I have says he only severed two months and then deserted.

The time would be right for this to be the Sarah listed in the first household. John R Tanner is listed on the Calhoun Co AL census for 1900 with his wife JoAnna and two children along with his mother Adeline S. Tanner.

The last census John is listed on is the Talladega Co, Alcensus for 1910 with his wife and children. JoAnna is listed on the 1920 Talladega Co census as Mrs J.T. Tanner.
