Katherina died 17 Aug 1953, Turtle Lake, McLean Co., ND, USA, buried: 21 Aug 1953, Turtle Lake Cemetery. Certificate of death on file. Peter:

Peter Schauer was born in Neudorf, South Russia, on May 12, 1864. Here he grew to young manhood. On October 2, 1889, he was married to Katherina Schlechter.

In 1893 they emigrated to the United States and settled in Eureka, South Dakota. In September of 1900, they migrated from Eureka in a covered wagon to the Turtle Lake area and homesteaded on SE 1/4 of section 28, Township 147 North Range 81. The trip was made in 11 days through very wet weather. So wet, in fact, that some of their linens became damp and moldy.

Their first home was built of cottonwood from the woods. There was no floor and the walls were plastered with a clay and straw combination. Their barn was built in the same manner.

Early church services were held in the Peter Schauer home with Rev. August Affeldt conducting the services. Later services were held in schools until the churches were built. The Schauers were charter members of Peace Lutheran Church.

Early threshing days meant much hard work for all. Grain was hauled either to Velva or Wilton, each of which was a 2 day journey. Mrs. Schauer worked side by side with her husband. She also accompanied him with her own wagon and team when grain was hauled.

All of the Schauer family suffered the great flu epidemic. They lost a son Gustof during this time.

Many pioneers in this area will remember the fine hospitality of the Schauer home. Pete and Katherina were always ready to lend a helping hand, and did so on many occasions. County commissioners, officials of McLean and Sheridan County and lowly travelers were welcomed alike. Mr. Schauer assisted many people in finding homesteads and giving them food and shelter until he could go out with them. A handkerchief tied to the buggy spoke was used to determine the bounds of the homestead. A survey stone was the beginning point from which these measurements were taken.

Water for the cattle had to be hauled so Mr. Schauer attempted to dig a well, but instead struck a vein of coal. The well produced no water, but considerable coal. Mr. Schauer pulled up the pails of coal with a rope. One time the rope got wet and slippery and it was impossible for him to pull himself out of his mine. Fortunately Charlie Berquist happened along and helped Mr. Schauer out.

Mr. Schauer needed shoes so badly he had his feet wrapped in burlap bags to keep them warm. Mr. Miller, the postmaster at old Turtle Lake, went with him to Washburn so he could become acquainted with the storekeeper and sell butter to buy much needed shoes. Since Mr. Schauer was familiar only with his native language it was difficult to convey his thoughts to others. One day he needed straw. He went to a neighbor with his hay rack and a forkful of straw and in his way was able to express his needs. He got the straw.

Twelve children were born to the Schauers'. They include: Ludwig, deceased; Christine, deceased; Jacob, deceased; Magdaline, deceased; John P., Turtle Lake; Lydia (Mrs. Christ Berg), Riverdale; Gustof, deceased; Emma, Turtle Lake; Edward, deceased; Emil, deceased; and Arthur, Turtle Lake.

Mr. Schauer passed away November 3, 1927. Mrs. Schauer passed away August 17, 1953. Taken from the Turtle Lake 50th Anniversary book 1905 to 1955.

Certificate of Death on file.

John Flemmer was born July 29, 1865. His wife, Karolina Schauer Flemmer was born Nov. 2, 1873.

They came to America with their three children Rosina, Jakob, and Katharine, together with Mrs. Flemmer's mother, Katherina Schauer, and brothers, Phillip, Ludwig and Adolf, and Mr. Flemmer's brother Karl, in the fall of 1900.

On a cold, dreary Sunday in October they landed at Harvey and due to a misunderstanding, found no one at the station to meet them. They indeed felt lost, forsaken and lonley. With much excitement and sign language, they finally found a man with a livery who took them to the home of an uncle of Mrs. Flemmer's and a brother, Jacob, in whose summer kitchen they spent their first winter in America.

This was a sod building about 14X20, with no floor, and with a cook stove and oven made of stones and mud. They heated their oven by building a fire in it, and heating the stones sizzling hot. They raked the ashes out and then put their bread in the oven to bake.

In the early spring of 1901, he filed on a homestead 14 miles southeast of Turtle Lake on the SE 1/4 of sec. 8-145-N80. On this he built a small two room frame building, dug a well by hand, broke a few acres of sod and planted wheat and flax. He built a four-stall sod barn with Missouri River timber for the roof. They also built a small sod granary.

It was on this homestead that two more children were born, Christine and Eva.

Mr. Flemmer proved up on his homestead and became an Americian citizen, of which he was very proud.

Throughout the years, Mr. and Mrs. Flemmer endured their share of hardships. They had little of this world's goods. They had little or no meat, lard, butter or fruit that first winter.

In 1903 frost took their flax crop. They spent their meager savings on a team of horses, only to have one die in a few days. A few months later he bought a team from a man traveling through the country selling horses. After two days the sheriff came and got one of them, as it had been stolen.

In 1906 he traded their homestead for a hotel in Turtle Lake and then later traded the hotel for a half section of land seven miles northwest of Turtle Lake. The youngest of six children, Louise, was born there.

In 1918, their daughter, Rose (Mrs. John Thurn) passed away leaving three small children. Mrs. Flemmer, now in poor health, took her three grandchildren and cared for them.

Mrs. Flemmer passed away May 19, 1932 and Mr. Flemmer died March 1, 1936. 1) Death certificate on file.

vi Philip Schauer #295 b. 15 Nov 1879, Neudorf, Odessa Co., South Russia, m. 22 Dec 1901, in Harvey, Wells Co., ND, Mathilda Schimke #342. Philip died 15 Apr 1935, Tribune, KS. Philip came to America in about 1900, settled in North Dakota first and then moved to Tribune, Kansas in 1925. Birth Record found on Film # 446257 US/CDN Area Index Card P. gives marriage date as 22 Dec. 1901.

vii Ludwig "Louie" Schauer #296 b. 17 Sep 1879, Russia, m. 1902, in Washburn, ND, Caroline Melhoff #364, (daughter of ______ Mehlaff #13845 and ? #13846). Ludwig died 1937, Loveland, CO.

Mr. Schauer was born in Russia September 17, 1879. He came to McLean County in 1900 and homesteaded five miles west of Turtle Lake on SW 1/4-145-82. In 1902 he married Caroline Melhoff at Washburn, ND and lived at Underwood in a one room sod house. They built a barn of cottonwood lumber from the Missouri River bottom timber.

In 1906 they moved to the Turtle Lake vicinity on Sec. 33-147-81 where they lived until 1925, at which time they moved to Kansas where they remained for five years. They came back and started farming again. The transportation was by horse and buggy or wagon.

The first few years they drove oxen and horses together until the ox tore loose from the disk and went into the pasture with the cattle. After that they worked with three horses. Later years Mr. Schauer traded and broke broncos. Some of this was for sport.

In 1915 threshing stands out as memorable as it took seven weeks to get it done. Mrs. Schauer had to cook for the men as many of the crew were out-of-state men. The men who ran the steam engine quit, and after loosing some time looking for another, they finally got started again. Some of the other men quit too, and it was the day before Christmas when they finally finished it.

Their vacation in the summer consisted of a trip to Washburn to the Missouri River bottoms to pick Juneberries. It took two days to make the trip. Usually two or three buggy loads of people would join together for the trip.

Their first car was a Model T Ford in 1914. It was quite a treat to ride in a car and greatly lessened the use of the horses. In 1920 Mr. Schauer started tractor farming when he bought an Avery. It pulled three plows and traveled a mile and a half an hour.

In 1936 Mr. Schauer retired from farming and moved to Loveland, Colorado where he passed away in 1937. Mrs. Schauer is now living in Lodi, CA.

They had Four children. Ferdinand and Edward L. are both farming near Turtle Lake. Mrs. Edward Vogel lives at Loveland, Colorado and Mrs. Emanuel Kundert at Lodi, CA.

Peter died 3 Nov 1927, Turtle Lake, McLean Co., ND, USA, buried: Turtle Lake Cemetery.

25. Andreas W. Schauer #291 (9.Christine7, 6.Johann6, 5.Johannes5, 4.Johannes4, 3.Samuel3, 2.Johann2, 1.Friedrich1) b. 23 May 1867, Neudorf, Odessa Co., South Russia, 25 May 1867, Neudorf, m. 18 Apr 1887, in Neudorf, Odessa Co., South Russia, Anna Maria Burr #383, b. 21 Aug 1866, Klein, Neudorf, Russia, (daughter of Johann Burr #14894 and Barbara Deschler #14893) d. 22 Apr 1956, St. Francis, KS, buried: St. Francis Cem. Andreas died 27 Oct 1946, Wheeler, Cheyenne Co., KS, buried: St. Francis Cem. Obit: ANDREW SCHAUER

Mr. Andrew Schauer, one of the early settlers of Cheyenne County, having lived here almost continuously since 1893, departed this life last Sunday morning at 3 a.m. The deceased was the youngest son of John Schauer and his wife Louise nee Schlepp. He was born in Neudorf, South Russia May 23, 1867 and two days later was received into the church by rite of Christian baptism. He was confirmed in this Christian faith March 21, 1882, by a public confession, which by proxy had been professed by his sponsors at baptism. Pastor Shrenk was the officiating pastor.

On April 18, 1887, he was united in marriage to Anna Marie Burr, at which occasion Pastor Shrenk also officiated. Thirteen children were born to this union, of which number, two died in infancy.

In 1893, together with his family he emigrated to America and settled on a farm 6 miles northwest of St. Francis, enduring the hardships of pioneer life, together with its adversity and prosperity. In 1917 he moved to a farm north of Wheeler, and later retired to the city of Wheeler. He has been a constant resident of Cheyenne County with the exception of an interval of 7 years, during which time he lived in Loveland, Colo. While living in Loveland, he and Mrs. Schauer were privileged to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary, April 18, 1937, with all of their children in attendance.

Mr. Schauer has the special distinction of being a charter member in the organization of two congregations; Salem Lutheran church 7 miles northwest of St. Francis and Zion, here in our city. Having himself enjoyed a thorough Christian training, and knowing the importance and value of the Christian instruction of youth and regular church attendance, he together with others of like faith and mind endeavored to help establish the church of the Reformation in their new home, so that they and their children could continue to enjoy the same blessings.

Mr. Schauer had never really enjoyed robust health, and from 1937 on was almost continuously ailing. Some seven weeks ago he was taken down with pneumonia, which condition was later complicated by pleurisy. Sunday morning at 3 a.m. death relieved him from his suffering.

His death is mourned by the following: his widow, Mrs. Anna Marie Schauer; his children; Mrs. Barbara Rath, Mrs. Katie Raile, John Schauer, Louie Schauer of Cambridge, Nebr., Andrew Schauer, Cedar Bluffs, Nebr.; Mrs. Mary Reub, Mrs. Martha Kluge, Valley, Nebr., Miss Christina Schauer, Loveland, Colo., Adolph Schauer, Wm. Schauer, and Mrs. Helen Frick, 33 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. He attained the age of 79 years, 5 months and 4 days. May he rest in peace. Funeral services were held in Zion Lutheran church Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. P.C. Schroeder, officiating. The German address was based on Luke 2, 25-32. John 11, 25-26 served the basis for the English address, in which the theme was developed:" Now is the time to confess: I believe in the resurrection of the body." A quartet composed of Mrs. Mathilda Cooper, Miss Anna Diekhoff, Mr. Sam Rath and Mr. Geo. Bruns sang appropriate numbers.

Interment was in the St. Francis cemetery.

Anna Marie Schauer passed away in her sleep during Sunday night at the Good Samaritan Village. Although she had not been well for some time, she nevertheless had attended the service at the Village that day, had eaten her usual evening meal and had gone to bed apparently being in her usual condition. She died during the night without anyone realizing it until morning. She reached the age of 89 years, 8 months and 1 day.

Anna Marie Burr was born on August 21, 1866, in a small town in southern Russia. She was baptized and became a child of God in infancy. She was received into communicant membership into the Lutheran Church at the time of her confirmation, the certificate of which the family still has in its possession. The document is dated May 10, 1881. After spending her youth in the home of her parents, she was married to Andrew Schauer in 1886. The couple determined to migrate to America and they arrived at St. Francis in 1893. Mrs. Schauer remained a resident of this community ever since, except for a number of years when she lived in Loveland, Colo. She became the mother of thirteen children, two of whom died in infancy. She was left a widow in 1946, after having married for 60 years. She spent the last years of her life at the Good Samaritan Village.

Mrs. Schauer and her husband were among those who were instrumental in the founding and organizing of Zion Lutheran church. She remained an active member of the church all her life. When the frailites of old age overtook her, she read the bible and devotional lliterature for her spiritiual edification, and she partook of the Lord's Supper frequently.

She leaves to mourn her passing: Mrs. John Rath, Mrs. Pete Raile, John, Louie of McCook, Andrew of Freemont, Nebr., Mrs. August Rueb, Mrs. Edward Kluge of Valley, Nebr., Mrs. Paul Hautman of Loveland, Colo., Adolph, William and Mrs. George Frick.
