Dorset village on the
River Stour. The church is called All Saints. Research Tips
A place called Longham lies
within the Parish of Hampreston, which traditionally strays over into
Hampshire. If your ancestors lived in Longham, you may find their wills
ascribed to ‘Southampton’ (the old name for Hampshire) rather than Dorset. If you cannot find the
expected events in your ancestor’s lives in the registers of Hampreston, ask yourself if the family
might have been non-conformist. There is an Independent church at Longham,
which is not far to walk from the Parish Church. (Unfortunately, the
whereabouts of the Registers are unknown.) There is Also the Roman Catholic
church at Stapehill to be considered. Unfortunately, these registers are also
lost, but at some point the years 1770-1816 were copied and they are printed
in the Catholic Record Society’s Volume 43. Good Books Audrey Greenhalgh, Hampreston’s
Pictorial Past (Ferndown: Power Publications,
1996) Audrey Greenhalgh, Along
Longham (Ferndown: Power Publications, 1990) Audrey Greenhalgh, Ferndown
– A Look Back (Ferndown: Power Publications, 1991) If you have the chance to
visit the area and enjoy walking, it’s also worth getting hold of The New
Stour Valley Path, Book One by Edward R. Griffiths (Bournemouth: Green
Fields Books, 1998). This outlines a six-day walk along the Stour, which
takes you through Longham. Useful Links http://www.thedorsetpage.com/locations/Place/H030.htm http://www.ferndown-town.co.uk/title-about.asp If you have any tips specifically about researching
