The Faulk Farm, "The Peanut Patch", has been recognized by the Alabama
Historical Commission and the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries
as a Century Heritage Farm. The land was purchased from the Federal Government
October 22, 1850 by Amelia Wells for $1.25 per acre. Sam Montgomery Blackman
purchased the land from Elijah and Martha Andrews January 2, 1871. It has been
farmed continuously since that date and remained in the same family.
Cotton was the principal crop in the early days but peanuts became the main crop
about 1925. Claybank Creek flows through part of the property and Sam Montgomery
Blackman erected a grist mill on it in 1871. Emmett H. Davis, one of Ozark's
oldest citizens, states he remembers going to the mill with his father on a wagon
pulled by mules. He states some played checkers on the porch of the mill while
waiting for their corn to be ground and carried on intense political and religious
discussions. Most travel was by wagons and mules but some came by ox carts.
Henry Lee Faulk, great nephew of Sam Montgomery Blackman made application to
L.
F. Sessions, Judge of Probate, to restore the mill on the same site September
26, 1923. The mill was restored in 1923 and operated until 1950. Frank Garner,
Judd Blackman and Nathan Isler were the millers in the order named.
Claude Eugene Loftin and Martha Faulk Loftin constructed their home on the property
in 1978 and are the present owners.
He was married to Annie Belle CLARK (daughter of Peter Augustus
(P.A. or Gus) CLARK and Martha Louisa HINES) on 14 Jan 1912
in Ozark, Dale Co., Alabama.(31) Other
documents show date of marriage as 18 January, 1912. I am of the opinion that
the license date of 13 January, 1912, was transcribed incorrectly. The license
shows the date of marriage as 14 January, 1912. Annie Belle
CLARK was born on 16 Aug 1893 in Ozark, Dale Co., Alabama. She died on 31
Mar 1979 in Ozark, Dale Co., Alabama. Henry Lee FAULK and Annie Belle CLARK
had the following children:
