Kane Republican Newspaper Articles
Great Great Grandfather George Welker, upon moving to Kane in 1865, first built the Mountain House which was later destroyed by fire, then he built the Kane House.

This next one is owned by Walter B. Smith who was first married to Rosa Welker, then later to her younger sister Elizabeth (Lizzie) Welker, after Rosa died (just in case you didn't follow the family line online yet...) It later became Smith & Welker Hardware after Great Great Grandfather Welker was out of the Hotel Business.

They sure did a lot in those days - they did not sit still. I love it.......... Horses and Trains for travel - how exciting to me - though I suppose not so much to them at all times. I do remember that I either went to Texas on the train with Aunt Helen or came back from there on one. Went through Chicago and had my first experience with an escalator.

Also, you can't imagine how I wish I had been able to share all of this with Mom, Dad, and all the family I actually knew. I hope they are watching from Heaven and enjoying it. This is giving us such an insight to our ancestor's lives and feels to me as if I know them all.
