1. ANDREW7 LEE (STEPHEN6, JOHN5, THOMAS4, CHARLES3, RICHARD HENRY2, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1770 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1850 in
Claiborne County, Tennessee. He married
MARGARET/PEGGY DANIELS July 16, 1798 in Botetourt County, Virginia, daughter
of PIERCE DANILES. She was born
Abt. 1780 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1850 in Claiborne County, Tennessee.
Notes for ANDREW LEE:
1. Per Henry H. Fuson; Andrew Lee, one of the
first pioneer families of Bell County, Kentucky, settled on the head waters of
Martins Fork of Cumberland River, near the present Harlan-Bell county
line. This family lived primarily on
Pucketts Creek and Browney's Creek.
Allegedly, The Lee family settled there in 1818, coming from
Rogersville, Tennessee. Andrew Lee had
50 acres of land surveyed in Bell County, Kentucky on April 21, 1819, and
patented May 24, 1821(Patent No. 4292, recorded at Frankfort, Kentucky,
"G" K.L.W., page 370). On
December 17, 1823 he patented 100 acres (Patent No. 7448). He sold all this land in 1830. Andrew Lee was residing in Claiborne County,
Tennessee in 1840.
2. Per Henry H. Fuson; Andrew Lee settled in Southeastern Kentucky near
what is now called Cubbage. Named
because of Andrew's encounter with a bear cub there. The bear attacked him where upon Andrew wrestled the bear and
killed it. The area where this occurred
is now called Cubbage, Bell County, Kentucky.
3. Andrew Lee was the progenitor of most of the
Lees that settled in western Lee County, Virginia. Two of their eleven children were born in Virginia before they
moved to Claiborne County, Tennessee, where they both died. They and their
children were classified as farmers but had additional occupations, some moving
to Harlan County, Kentucky, as coal miners. Other descendants began to settle
Lee County, Virginia.
4. The Lees were God-fearing people of the
Protestant faith. They supported their
church and had active roles in their community. They contributed to the rise in the standard of living and to the
development of the country.
5. The name Lee is well known in Virginia
History and throughout the United States.
Lee ancestors have played important roles in war and peace. Lees of
today are active in all occupations.
6. Per Henry H. Fuson; Andrew Lee came from
Bunscomb County, North Carolina into Tennessee, then on into Kentucky where he
purchased on the head of Martin Fork in 1818.
[Note: Henry H. Fuson
contradicts the place Andrew Lee originated from before moving into Kentucky in
his book, "History of Bell County, Kentucky - Vol. 1". He states two possible origins.]
7. According to Henry H. Fuson, author of
"History of Bell County, Kentucky" Andrew was a relative of
"Light Horse Harry Lee" who was the father of General Robert E. Lee.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
There is no proof that
Andrew Lee is the son of Stephen Lee & Anne Poore and thus this lineage
does not include information prior to Andrew Lee. Disputed names listed as Andrew's father are: William Lee, Hancock Lee, James Lee and
Stephen Lee. I personally believe
Andrew Lee was the son of James Lee for various reasons.

application, suggesting she could not write.
She was granted a widow's pension of $12 a month until her death.
3. Jul 19, 1894 - Peggy and heirs signed a
conveyance deed to Martin Head.
Notes for LARKIN WEBB:
1. According to pension application he was 5'
6'' tall with a fair complexion, light hair and blue eyes. He did sign his pension application.
2. August 11, 1858, Knox Co. Court land order
grant (Book 54, pg. 339-p. 1795) survey 50 acres on Little Clear Creek. The same day Larkin had 50 acres surveyed on
Little Poplar Creek, Knox Co. His land was adjacent to that of James Mason who
witnessed the deed along with Elam Partin(Knox Co. Survey Book 3, pg. 309). Larkin signed with his marker. The survey mentioned hickory, white oak,
beech and chestnut trees.
3. July 25, 1863 - Filed grant in Knox County
Court for 200 acres on the north side of Little Clear Creek (Book 64, pg.211).
4. A private in Co. K, 49th Regiment Kentucky Infantry
Volunteer, enrolled August 4 1863 at Knox Co., for one year. At Camp Nelson, September 19 1863. Reported on the rolls from Sept. 19, 1863 to
Feb. 29, 1864. Sergeant. Served under Captain John Goodin. Mustered
out with company at Lexington, Kentucky
December 26, 1864.
5. July 22, 1869, Larkin & Margaret sold 50
acres on Little Clear Creek to James Mason.
6. Justice of the Peace in District No. 2, Aug
1870. Ordered by Circuit Court to hold
his courts on the 3rd Thursday of each month as the law requires.
7. June 12, 1871, Larkin and other Justices
were summoned to court to make some arrangements about building a county jail.

9. January 26, 1876 bought land from Riley
& Sarah Gibson. Witnessed by James

door to daughter Rachel and her husband Levi Gibson in 1880. Census lists both parents as being born in

Lee researcher, "David is a first cousin to General Robert E. Lee. David moved from Virginia to Martin's Fork

I personally do not
believe that David was a first cousin of General Robert E. Lee unless David's
parents were someone else. General
Robert E. Lee was the son of Henry Lee, aka Light Horse Harry, and Henry had 4
brothers and 3 sisters; Charles, Richard Bland, Theordorick, Edmund Jennings,
Lucy, Mary and Anne. Any children of
these 7 siblings would be the first cousin of General Robert E. Lee.

She was a member of
Monroe Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to her two
husbands, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert G., the rev. M.L.
and Nath Fuson and three sisters, Roxie Fuson, Eva Head and Oppie Simmons.

had her baby, Robert Roscoe, secured to the the saddle of the horse she was
leading. A bear approached her but she
held her ground and fought off the bear with rocks.

lived on the north side of Little Clear Creek above the Fate Fuson place. Their oldest child, Robert Roscoe, was born
there. They later moved up the creek to
a farm which they bought at the mouth of Wide Hollow above Ben's Fork. All three of their daughters were born
here. They lived there until 1917 when
they bought part of the Fate Fuson place and moved into the house that had
belonged to Jeff Fuson. Their two youngest sons were born in this house and it
was Marion and Oatie's home for the rest of their lives. Marion was a farmer and held the office of
county surveryor for many years.

Gilbert Lee lived in Lee
County, Virginia on a large farm in an area known as Possum Hollow, near the
Rose Dale community,
about four miles south of Rose Hill.
Gilbert was a
prominent farmer, growing corn, tobacco, and cattle. He was known for many bee hives and honey.
The first oil well in
Possum Hollow and second in Lee county was drilled on this farm in 1922 by a
group of Rose Hill businessmen. Oil was
discovered at 300 feet.
Gilbert moved to Lee
County, Virginia from Harlan County, Kentucky, in the early 1900's and remained
in Lee County until his death.
Gilbert and Vina were
raised around Brownies Creek, Kentucky.
They ran a General Store and owned a big farm near Path Fork, now known
for its abundance of coal. He sold the
land around 1910, and came to Rose Hill, Virginia, where he bought a farm in
Possum Hollow.

Roscoe's mother, Rosa
Belle "Oatie", always said that he was born after midnight, but the
midwife filling out the birth certificate made a mistake. His real birth date is April 3, 1900.
Roscoe is the eldest
child of Marion and Oatie Evans. He
attended the lower grades at the John Martin School (Walnut Grove) at the head
of Little Clear Creek. He received his
eigth grade diploma/teaching certificate from Union College in Barbourville,
Kentucky. He then taught at Pine Grove
School on Little Clear Creek and at Cannon Creek School. Robert and his two
sisters, Ethel and Flo, attended Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College in
Richmond in the early 1920's. Roscoe
graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1926 and from the University of
Louisville School of Medicine in 1930.
While attending
medical school, he spent his summers working as an assistant to his uncle, Dr.
Phillip Lee Fuson. Dr. Fuson's untimely
death in 1929 left the Arjay area without a physician. When Roscoe finished school in the spring of
1930, he went to Arjay and practiced medicine there for 60 years.
There was no paved
road up the left fork of Straight Creek, so the best means of transportation
for the doctor in his beginning years was the horse. Dr. Evans had a big black female mare, that was a pet who would
always come to him when he called her.
Late one afternoon they had gone up the White Mountain Branch to deliver
a baby. The temperature was below zero
and there was blowing snow. When they
reached the patient's house, there was no shelter for the horse so she was left
to run free. Dr. Evans was in the house all night. When he was ready to leave he just had to whistle and his mare
was there in a minute, ready to take him home.
There were several
large companies on Straight Creek that employed Dr. Evans; Cary Glendon Coal
Company, Fox Ridge Mining, Big Jim Coal Company, Coleman Fuel, Kentucky Ridge
Coal Company, Bell Coal Company, and C&C Company. He also was the doctor for Ritter Lumber Company and a barrel and
stove Company in the early 1950's. The
rate was $2 a month that each worker had withheld from his pay for health care
for himself and his family. Dr. Evans
was "working on the cuts".
This fee covered all house calls, office visits, and most
medication. After the mines closed, Dr.
Evans continued making house calls until the 1980's.
Roscoe met his wife in
1926 at the bus station when he was traveling to school in Lexington. Roscoe loved the outdoors and hunting with
his brothers and friends. He loved the
people of Bell County and rarely met one he could not call by name. He served on the Bell County Board of
Education for 25 years.

Dorothy is the second
child of Axie and John Slusher. She attended
Bourbourville Baptist Institute (BBI) in the early grades and Union
College. Dorothy taught school at
Possum Hollow in Knox County, worked in Guy Patterson's office in Pineville,
Governor Sampson's Law Office in Barbourville, and was a court reporter in
Williamsburg and Barbourville. When Dorothy married Roscoe Evans she moved to
Arjay.
Dorothy says,
"Moving to Glendon mining camp in 1937 was like stepping into the old
west. The people were wild and woolly,
the miners got drunk and shot up the camp.
No one wanted to live next door to us because someone was at our house
day and night looking for the doctor or bringing the sick and injured to our
door. Dr. Evans tried to keep another
doctor with him. They would come, but
not stay long. The work was too
demanding and dangerous. We kept two
horses for 'Doc' to use. One to rest
and one to ride. There was a dirt road
from Pineville to Arjay but it was not dependable transport. The train was the only way to travel. My
mother had an interest in a bus company from Corbin to Knoxville, Tennessee and
I had been involved in this business at times.
So, when the road was improved up Straight Creek, I decided to open a bus company. The Straight Creek Bus Line, Inc. ran to
Crockett, Stoney Fork, Fourmile Hollow, Flat Lick and Ely's Coal
Corporation. The fare was 10
cents. During World War II, car owners
couldn't get gasoline. Petrol and tires
were sold for public transport. Our
problem was keeping our buses on the road and keeping drivers. I had not signed a contract with the union
and one of my drivers had been ambushed and killed. We had so many passengers to move that we could not afford to
have any of our buses parked. We were
constantly looking for parts and extra tires.
Since we had so many people in the bus station's waiting room looking
for something to eat and drink, my sister, Virginia Howard, decided to open a
food concession. She later went in the
restaurant business and opened Howard's Drive-In. After the war, the demand for public transportation declined, so
in the early 1950's I sold the bus company.
'Doc' and I had built a new home and had created space for his doctor's
office in the downstairs. I came home
to manage his medical practice and am still living here in Arjay."

to Bell County, Kentucky where Herman was born.
Shortly, they moved back
to Lee County in search for better employment. There he worked at a sawmill and
brought logs down from the mountains by mule.
There had already been
a migration of relatives and friends-Lees, Saylors, and others who had left the
area for Ohio and a better life. Those who were farmers found rich flat land to
till in Van Wert and Paulding County, Ohio, so Jim and Virdie decided to follow
and took their two young children in 1920 and move to Van Wert, Ohio.
There Jim found
employment, bought a home, and their family grew.
The family then moved
to Allen County, Indiana. Jim was
employed by a government facility, the Casad Ordinance Depot until his
retirement in 1963. Virdie remained a
homemaker. They had a large garden and
true to their heritage, raised and prepared much of their own food.
Through the years they
visited occasionally with some relatives they had left behind.
