"Jean Georges and his wife emigrated to the US with their four children. All parents on both sides had previously died in Seltz. They sailed from the port of Le Havre, France, on a ship named Viola, and arrived at New Orleans on October 30, 1845. It can be supposed that they then took a river boat up the Mississippi to arrive in Dubuque, Iowa in February 1846 and settled there." "Seltz - (Selz in German) is an ancient town located about 27 miles northeast of Strasbourg, very close to the Rhine River. Prior to 1871, it was part of the French Province of Alsace. Between 1871and 1918, it was part of the region which Germans call Alsace-Lorraine and took from the French in the French-German War of 1870-71. It is now part of the Arrondissement of Wissembourg in the Department of Bas-Rhin, France. In 1852, it had 2,402 inhabitants; recently (1964) the population was down to 2,150. The town's old records - many of which are written in Latin - contain numerous entries pertaining to Jean Georges Bahl, Marie Francoise Gahr, their relatives and their ancestors. Some of these go back to the 15th century." "In the course of emigration from Seltz, the names of all the members of the family, except Bernard, were "Anglicized" (in accordance with the then current custom) as follows: "Jean Georges Bahl became George; Bahl Marie Francoise Gahr became Franciska Carr Bahl; Elisabeth became Elizabeth; Andre' became Andrew; Henriette became Harriet. "George and Franciska and their son Francis are buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque, Iowa in section #1, lot 91, graves #7,8, and 9." General Notes:According to her obituary, Elizabeth came to America with her parents when she was 13 years old. They settled in Center Township near Dubuque Co., Iowa. At the age of 22 she was married to Joseph and they resided at Dubuque until they moved to Monticello around 1869. The family lived on a farm three miles out of town. After Joseph's death, Elizabeth led a quiet retired life in town where several of her daughters had remained with her. She was an invalid for many years because of creeping paralysis. Pneumonia was the cause of her death. Her daughters were all at her bedside when she passed peacefully into the life immortal. The funeral services were held at the Church of Sacred Heart, by Rev. John McCormick. She was a goodmother and her children will never cease to bless her memory which is sanctified with a wealth of love and unselfish devotion to her family.

Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Graves was born May 19, 1886 at Jones county, Iowa, the daughter of Benjamin R. and Catherine (Bobleter) Tuel. She spent her childhood in and around Monticello, Iowa. On April 18, 1906, she was united in marriage with Robert K. Graves at Monticello. In 1914 they moved to Minnesota and lived the last 47 years in and around Brownsdale. To this union were born nine children. Her life was centered around her family and home. In the past few years she found great enjoyment in her 27 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She was a very wonderful mother and friend and will be greatly missed by all. She found great satisfaction and companionship with the members of the Sunshine Birthday Club and the Martha Circle of Brownsdale Methodist Church. Mrs. Graves entered St. Olaf Hopital April 11, and underwent surgery April 14. Martha E. Graves passed away May 2, at St. Olaf Hospital. Mrs. Graves is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Roy Van Vleet (Alice), Mrs. Francis Carroll (Frances), Mrs. Glen Krulish (Jean), Austin, Mrs. Gertrude Wilder, Van Nuys, Calif.; four sons, Robert and Arthur, Austin, Harry and Donald of Brownsdale; 27 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Arvilla Derflinger, Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Virginia Eilers, Monticello, Mrs. Frances Bahl, Dubuque, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert K. Graves, one son, Lynn, her parents, three brothers, one sister. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. May 6, at the Jordan Mortuary Chapel, the Rev. William J. Campbell officiating. Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery, Brownsdale, with Ronald Van Vleet, David Van Vleet, Darryl Graves, Patrick Carroll, Roger Graves, Richard Wilder, grandsons of Mrs. Graves, serving as bearers.

Donald went to CC Camp in 1936 at Houston, MN. He later worked for Brownsdale/Dexter area farmers until he entered the US Army on Feb 24, 1942. He served as field lineman with the 317 Field Artillery, 3rd Infantry Division in Tunisia, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome, Southern France, Rhineland. He was discharged as a Corporal Aug 9, 1945. He was a lifemember of the VFW and American Legion. Upon his return in 1945, he was employed by George A. Hormel & Co., until he retired in 1980. Donald and Marian built their home in Brownsdale on property he bought from his parents.

The Bottom Line

They're all in the fields, Dad,Robert, Harry and Bill.
There's no time for lazy, not time for ill.
There's wood to fetch and milking to be done.
There's beans and corn to plant, and all before setting sun.

Three days to get over your sick,
