[History of Mower County, 1911]
A pioneer of Mower County who arrived in 1857. About 1831 was taken by his parents to Vermillion Co., Indiana, when fifteen years of age. In 1849 Sylvester took his family to Allamakee Co., Iowa, and there his wife, Catherine, died in December 1850, leaving six children, after which in 1852 he married Rebecca, who also bore him six children. In May 1857, he came to Mower county and for eight years lived in Red Rock township (Brownsdale). Eight years later he traded farms, and secured a place in section 19, Waltham township, to which he moved, and there continued to live until his death.

He was taken by his parents to Allamakee Co., Iowa in 1849, and came to Mower Co., Minnesota in 1856 with five yoke of oxen to locate a claim for his father. Crossing the prairie from Calmar, Iowa to Brownsdale, Minnesota, he found no wood to make a fire, and on the second day he took a box top from the wagon and split it up to make a fire to cook dinner. He broke the first prairie ever broken in Red Rock Township. In 1869 he brought his family to Red Rock and here he has since continued to reside. He was educated in the common schools, all his school hours being spent in an old log schoolhouse. He farmed on his father's farm for several years, and later purchased the same for his own.

Isaac Dennis, aged seventy-six died this morning at 5 o'clock at his home in Lansing. Mr. Dennis had been ill since May 4 with bronchittis which developed into pneumonia, from which latter disease he died. Isaac Dennis, a retired farmer now living in Lansing village, was born June 7, 1838, in Vermillion county, Indiana, son of Sylvester A. and Chatherine (Mathews) Dennis. He was taken by his parents to Allamakee county, Iowa in 1849, and came to Mower county in 1856 with five yoke of oxen to locate a claim for his father. Dennis, Blooming Prairie; George Dennis, Hayfield; E. E. Dennis, Udolpho; Cora Getman, Holley, Minnesota; Mrs. C.E. Lewis, Austin; Frank Dennis, Elkport, Iowa; Mrs. Will Subra, Austin; Newton Dennis, Sargent; Mrs. Vance King, Udolpho.

Conducted agricultural operations on a well-arranged, well-kept farm of eighty acres in Udolpho township, and was one of the substantial men of the vicinity, his interest in education being shown by the fact that he had served on the school board of his district for over eleven years. He came to Mower county with his parents at the age of seven years, and was reared on the home farm, receiving such education as the schools of his neighborhood afforded. When he grew to manhood, he left home and worked out for a time before purchasing his farm. When a youth, he was for three successive years herd-boy in Udolpho township. In this connection he had many interesting experiences, and the first year had the excitement of killing fifty-two rattle snakes. Land at that time could be purchased for$3 to $6 per acre.

Catherine J. King was born in 1881 in Mower County, the daughter of Mary and Isaac Dennis. She attended school in Mower County and on Dec 17, 1899 she was united in marriagewith Vance A. King. They moved to Ipswich, S.D. in 1903, where they lived 10 years, returning to Mower County in 1913. At the time of her death, Mrs. King resided at 601 W. Maple. She was baptized a Christian and was a member of the Church ofChrist, taking an active part in all activities up to the time of her death. Mrs. King died Dec 28, 1956 at St. Olaf Hospital after a short illness. Funeral service were held at 1:30p.m. Dec 31, at the Church of Christ, Paster Herman H. Kooy, officiating. Interment was in Lansing Cemetery with the Worlein Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. King is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Oren Blabaum (Hazel) and Mrs. Harry Larson (Ruby), Austin, and Mrs. George Johnson (Mabel), New Windsor, Ill.; two sons Roy King, Austin and Rex King, Boyes Hot Springs, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; a sister Mrs. Rose Lewis, Austin. She was preceded in death by her husband, 23 years ago. Out-of-town persons attending the funeral came from Fargo, N.D., Hayfield, Stillwater, Bayport, Minn., Blooming Prairie, New Windsor, Ill., and Boyes Hot Springs, Calif.

Marian Katherine Graves, 75, Austin, died Sunday, June 18, 2000 at St. Marks Lutheran Home. Marian was born Oct 7, 1924, at Albert Lea, the daughter of Roy and Hazel (King) Selix. She lived and attended school in the Austin and Albert Lea area, graduating from Austin High School in 1942. She worked for the Geo. A. Hormel Co., where she met her husband, Donald D. Graves, and they were married April 22, 1946 in Caledonia, Minn. They purchsed land in Brownsdale, where they built their home and were members of the Brownsdale United Methodist Church. There were seven children born to this union. The Graves enjoyed many years fishing at Leech Lake and gardening. Following the death of her husband, Marian continued to enjoy traveling and spending time with her family. Marian devoted her life to her children and their families, who along with her many friends will miss her warm smile and laughter.
Marian was preceded in death by her busband, one grandchild, Michael A. Thompson, and her parents. She is survived by children and spouses, Donna (Don) Salisbury, Reno, NV; Bobbi (Dean) Thompson, Ames, IA; Jay Graves, Reno, NV, David Graves, Charlotte, NC; Marcia (David) Vold, Faribault, MN; Jerry Graves, Brownsdale, Bradley (Bernie) Graves, Albert Lea; 23 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, sisters, Ruth Mitchell, Sacramento, CA; Lola Olson, Colorado Springs, CO; brother, Donald Selix, Ellensburg, WA, nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 am, 23 Jun 2000 at the Brownsdale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald D. Budd, officiating. Casket bearers were Jeffrey Thompson, Elizabeth Thompson, Melissa Graves, Rheannon Graves, Michelle Turner and Donald Graves, grandchildren of Marian.
Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery in Brownsdale.

Marian married Donald David Graves, son of Robert King Graves and Martha Elizabeth Tuel, on 22 Apr 1946 in Caledonia, Houston, Minnesota. (Donald David Graves was born on 26 Dec 1918 in Red Rock Twp, Mower, Minnesota ¹², died on 25 Feb 1986 in Rochester, Olmsted, Minnesota ¹³ and was buried on 19 Apr 1986 in Greenwood Cemetery, Brownsdale, Mower, Minnesota ¹⁴. The cause of death was heart and kidney complications.)
