He attended high school Between 1959 - 1965, at Eastmoor Senior High School, Columbus, Ohio. Graduated.

He entered military service (US Army) on November 17, 1965, at Fort Hayes Army Recruitment Center, Columbus, Ohio, took basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, basic medical training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, advanced medical training (MOS 91C20-Clinical Specialist) at Fitzsimons Army Hospital, Denver, Colorado, then served two tours of duty with the USARV, the Republic of Vietnam. He ETS'd at Fort Lewis, Washington on December 17, 1968.

He attended the following colleges:

Marriage Notes for David Davis and Flora Urban: 

Saturday, September 20, 1980, began as a sultry, hot, humid, mostly cloudy day. The roses at the park were still in full bloom. We had planned our wedding well. However, the landscapers had dumped a full load of manure mulch not more than 20 feet from the gazebo, not realizing that a wedding was to be held that day. Fortunately the wind was strong enough and in the right direction to keep the smell away. The sun came out. The wedding went as planned. The reception was at a hotel near Morse Road and I-71. The food was excellent. We enjoyed the company of our family and friends. Below, please find two photos of our wedding:

D2. Atlee Harrison Davis :

 

Was born on March 12, 1912 in Logan, Ohio (Hocking Cty).

He died on November 21, 1986 in Crawfordville, Florida. He is buried there.

He was the son of D4. Unknown man and D5. Flossie E. (Davis) Taylor.

He attended, and graduated from, Carbon Hill High School, Hocking County, Ohio, around 1930. He played on the basketball team.

He was employed by White Castle Systems, The Ford Motor Company, Detroit, Michigan, and became a journeyman tool & die maker at the General Motors Corporation. He was employed at their plant, in Columbus, Ohio, for 34 years until he retired around the late 1970's. He liked to hunt. The few times I had good experiences around him were when he took me hunting with him in the fall, down around his boyhood haunts in Logan, Ohio. He was an excellent marksman. He had a large collection of very well kept rifles. He was meticulous in their care. He very much liked tooled items, and appreciated good workmanship. He was also a pilot. He learned to fly in early adulthood. I heard he had a real tough childhood. He was raised by his grandfather, as I understand it. His grandfather, D10. Thomas Henry Davis, owned a large farm on Davis-Chapel Road, south of Logan, Ohio. This farm was sold to George W Walker, who married Velma Davis, both of whom can be found in this database.

D3. Louise Arnetta Hughes :

 

Was born on August 21, 1915, in New Straitsville, Ohio (Perry Cty).

She died November 30, 1975 in Columbus, Ohio (Franklin Cty). She was buried on December 04, 1975, at Oak Grove Cemetery (behind the High School), Logan, Ohio (Hocking Cty).

She Attended, and graduated from, Carbon Hill High School, Hocking County, Ohio, around 1933. She was on the basketball and track teams.

She attended Bliss College, in Columbus, Ohio, and received a diploma in Bookkeeping.

D4. Unknown man : There is no information as to the name of Flossie Ethel (Davis) Taylor's first liaison, which produced her first son, Atlee.

 

D5. Flossie E. (Davis) Taylor :

 She was born on March 31, 1893, in Logan, Ohio (Hocking Cty).

She died on November 16, 1918 in Logan, Hocking County, Ohio, after an acute illness, at her fathers home, Thomas Henry Davis, Davis Chapel Road, Gore Township, Logan, Hocking County, Ohio. She is buried in an unmarked grave in the family cemetery, just north of her father's house. There are two unmarked graves just down the hill, about twenty feet from where her father, and grandfather are buried. They are all buried at the top of the cemetery, northeast corner. Her death certificate, which can be found at vital statistics at the Hocking County Hospital, shows her being buried there. A newspaper obituary, in the Hocking County newspaper, dated in November, 1918, Shows her being married to Harry E. Taylor in 1916, and dying, , on November 16, 1918. Interesting to note that she is shown to have married Mr. Taylor in 1916, and her second son's last name is Woodruff.

 D6. Harry Hughes :

 

He was born on December 26, 1877, in New Freeport, Pennsylvania (Greene Cty).

He died, around April, 1965, in Columbus, Ohio (Franklin Cty). He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery (behind the high school), Logan, Hocking County, Ohio. Cause of Death: Complications of Diabetes/ Old age.

He was the son of D12. John Harrison Hughes and D13. Mary Maria West.

He was an oilfield engineer, and worked for the Buckeye Pipeline Company, in southeastern Ohio for many years. He followed the oil industry out of western Pennsylvania, into West Virginia, then into southeastern Ohio. A stern, quiet man. Conservative, thrifty, and a man of few words, but definitive action.

 Notes on Harry : Harry had no middle name. He loved to watch prize fighting (as he called it). He was devoted to Ida.

He married D7. Ida Magdalene Hopp, in Lowell, Washington County, Ohio, on October 17, 1900. They were married for 65 years.

 NOTE: I originally had them married in Williamstown, WV. Their Golden Anniversary announcement, in the 1950 Hocking County Newspaper, has them married in Lowell, Ohio.

 

D7. Ida Magdalene (Hopp) Hughes :

 

She was born on April 05, 1882, in New Straitsville, Ohio (Perry Cty).

She died on November 30, 1965 in Columbus, Ohio (Franklin Cty). She was buried on December 4, 1965, at Oak Grove Cemetery (behind the high school), Logan, Ohio (Hocking Cty). Cause of Death: Complications of Diabetes/ Old age.

She was the daughter of D14. Jacob Hopp and D15. Marian Gage Srague.

 

Notes on Ida :

 

Ida was very stern, quiet, and religious. I remember that a favored bible was always near her favorite chair, and beside her bed. It is the bible with which I began this decades long search for the roots of our families. In the pages of it, I found most of the dates that initiated my search for our family history. She loved the color purple. She was an excellent cook. Loved to make pies. Especially for me, when I rustled in the woods in back of our home on 228 S. Hampton Road, Columbus, Ohio, for blackberries, which were thick until Eastmoor High School was built there. She was well versed in nursing techniques.

I tend to agree with his genealogical research, since my own stops at Thomas Henry. My only reference to William Davis, Thomas's father, had no location shown except the state of Ohio, no county.

Most of the Hughes were concentrated around the area of New Freeport, PA. until they dispersed after Mary's death. Her last known address was 408 Jefferson street, Mannington, W.V. Notes for Alice Malvina HUGHES: October 2001 - Found a record in the LDS database (afn 879k-3J) that has her being both born & died at Long Lake, Loudonville, Ashland county Ohio, same dates for birth & death. I believe the Bowlby county library records are more accurate. She is said to be buried at Glover Gap cemetery. Her death info at Bowlby Library shows a town called "Lakeville"? Sounds pretty much like "Long Lake"? George Downing's online database shows her middle name as "Malvernia".

Notes for Jacob HOPP: Described himself as a farmer and contractor. Documented records: Birth dates confirmed 1900 census, soundex reel h-100, Columbus, Ohio main public library. Birth & death Information on the children found on a field trip to Washington County Pa, probate court and from grave markers at greenlawn cemetery outside of Lowell, Ohio. No marriage certificate found, did find references to owned property around Lowell, Ohio until sold. Found the Hopp family in the Zanesville, Ohio city directories beginning in 1907 through the middle 1930's. They then seemed to leave the area. Marian Sprague's birth date is confirmed from the same reference book found in her father's record notes.

Ida Hughes family bible lists Loella as being born 1875, not 1885. I tend to believe grandma Ida. I can't see her being married at 11 years old to Mr. Harris. Notes for John George WEST: The following narrative is from a book, "The Hill, West, Beauchamp & Martin Families", found at the Bowlby Memorial Library ( Greene County) Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.

 

When John was a young lad in England, he was abducted one day and wound up as an indentured servant in America to a Mr. John Haines, a New Jersey Quaker. When he became of age to do so, he enlisted in the Colonial Army. While fighting one day, he chanced upon two brothers fighting on the English side. Subsequent events led to the desertion of the two brothers ( Samuel & William). They hid on the May family farm, a family of Dutch immigrants. It is there that John met Margaret, his wife to be. John received a saber cut at the battle of Eutaw Springs, N.C. After the war, he and Margaret were married. Contact with his brother Samuel was lost( it is assumed he repatriated to England). He farmed with brother Wiliam around Greene County, Pennsylvania, then moved north to Wheeling Creek, Where he was last reported around 1845. John's pension file # is: w4530, Nat'l Archives & Record Service Washington, D.C. John's will is found in Book #1, Page 286, Greene Cty, PA court house. On 27 April 1818 John West made his first application for a pension N due him for service during the Revolutionary War; he then appeared before David Gray, an Associate Judge of Greene Co. He stated that B at the beginning of the war he resided in "Gloucester" County, NJ . After serving several tours in the Militia he joined the Flying Camp under Captain John Davis, for a period of 8 months. He was in two "Scrimmages" on the North River and then enlisted in the light horse service called the "troops of light dragons" under Captain Michael Rudolph, commanding the 3rd Company in the troop commanded by Col . Henry Lee for during the war. This enlistment was at Elizabethtown , NJ, and he joined the troop at Burlington, but does not recall the date. From Burlington they went to Guilford Courthouse in NC., from there to "Camberline" and he was wounded in the head during a scrimmage with the enemy; he was in the Battle of "EUTAW" Springs in SC. At the close of the war, after the surrender of Cornwallis to the American Army, he was honorably discharged in SC, near Charleston, but has lost his discharge. He is now advanced in years and due to the head wound his eyesight is impaired so that he is unable to labor and is in low circumstances and in need of assistance from his country for support. He spent more than five years in the army. To this application, John West signed his name before David Gray. On 26 August 1819 John West again appeared before David Gray to amend his declaration previously made - he entered the service in the latter end of September or first part of October in the year preceding that in which General Wayne took Stony Point, 1776, in Lee's Legion in the VA Line - was disbanded near Charleston (SC) in fall of 1782 and arrived at his home in Gloucester County in Jersey State after the corn was gathered and the hogs put up to fatten. That the next spring, last of April or early in May, he met the officers of the company in Philadelphia according to the directions of an advertisement published in the newspapers, and then and there received his written discharge signed by Captain James Armstrong. On 18 September 1820 John West appeared in the Court of Common Pleas to declare his property, a provision required for his pension to be continued. At that time he stated that he was 68 years of age - served under Captain John (formerly given as Michael) Rudolph and Col . Henry Lee for a period of 4 years and 10 months. His property consisted of one mare and colt, $40; one horse, $40; three cows @ $8, $24 ; three yearling calves, $7; two spring calves, $3; ten sheep, $10; nine hogs, $9; household furniture, $15; total value $148. He had one daughter, Susannah, 16 years old and just able to maintain herself by spinning and housework; one son, James, 11 years old, small of his age and can scarcely do what will maintain himself; one son, Samuel, 9 years old; and one son, John, 7 years old. He lived on a very hilly and barren piece of land supposed to be vacant "about 20 acres cleared except that it is heavily covered with dead timber which is continually falling down and renders it almost impossible for me to work it, indeed cannot without the benevolent assistance of my neighbors ." All the pension he had already drawn he had paid to his creditors or used in support of his family and he yet owed $35. On 7 July 1845 Margaret West, aged 74 years, resident of Greene Co applied for pension as widow of John West, who was a private in the New Jersey line and drew a pension at the rate of $96 per year. She stated that she had been married to John West on the 23 August 1790 by ....Groves Esq. in Strasburgh, Lancaster Co.,PA. She submitted as evidence, a page from a testament showing the record John had made thereon shortly after their marriage. John West had died 21 May 1826 and since that time the record had been kept in her possession . To this she affixed her mark before Asa McClelland. On 30 June 1849 Henry Lightner appeared before Benjamin Jennings , a Justice of the Peace in Greene Co.,PA, and stated that he had first become acquainted with John and Margaret West in 1806 when they were living in the eastern part of Greene Co, near a town called Jefferson. The next year, in 1807, they moved to Center Township, in the western part of the county. When he first became acquainted with them they had several children, the eldest of which was Jacob, who must have been 12 or 14 years old; other children were, Elizabeth, John , Samuel, and several others whose ages were separated by 2 or 3 year intervals. Lightner had known them quite intimately and believed from the ages of their children compared with his own, and other circumstances, that John and Margaret must have been married about 1790. On 14 July 1846 Henry Jacobs appeared before Daniel Hook, a Justice of the Peace; he had been well acquainted with John and Margaret West and from the ages of their children they must have been married about 1789 or 1790. The eldest son of John and Margaret married the sister of dependent (Henry Jacobs) and this son was then at least 54 years of age; they also had John, Samuel, Susannah, Elizabeth and others. Both Henry Jacobs and Henry Lightner signed their names. On 2 December 1846 Jane Rush appeared before Daniel Hook and said she had known John and Margaret West (who was before her marriage Margaret May) since 1791 or 1792, or before. She first became acquainted with them in York Co.,PA, and knew them there until 1803 or 1804 when John and Margaret moved to Greene Co. and again became acquainted with them in 1824. John West died some 3 or 4 years later. She affixed her mark. On 9 Jun 1847 Susannah Coen appeared in Wetzel Co.,VA (now WV) before Ebenezer Clark, a Justice of the Peace for Wetzel Co. She stated that she had known John and Margaret West in York Co.,PA before their marriage. In fact, Susannah and Margaret were sisters; Margaret was formerly Margaret May. She was not present at the wedding of John and Margaret; however, she well recollected when it was as she lived with them some months immediately after their marriage. She knew that the wedding had to have taken place about 1791 or 1792 from her own age and from the time she left York Co., which was in 1794. Susannah signed this affidavit. On 17 June 1848 John Staggers appeared before Benjamin Jennings , a Justice of the Peace for Greene Co. He said he had been acquainted with John West and Margaret May in York Co.,PA before their marriage. In fact, he attended their wedding and saw them married by Esquire Groover. He was not sure of the year, maybe 1791 or 1792, but not later than 1793 as he, himself, married in 1793 and John and Margaret then had one child. John Staggers removed to the waters of Dunkard Creek, Greene Co.,PA and John and Margaret West removed to said county; they again became acquainted and Staggers knew they had a family of 10 or 12 children; many of whom he was well acquainted with. To this he signed his name "John Stigers". Margaret West was allowed a pension and her death date is not given ; she was living yet in 1850. A daughter, Susan, died in infancy and daughter Elizabeth, married Daniel Martin. According to the will of John West, Jacob was the eldest son and Elizabeth was the eldest daughter. James, Samuel, and John were to inherit the land on which John West lived, each to have one third share. John West most certainly is buried in Center Township, but the exact location has not been ascertained. *Maria Margretha is Margaret May West who applied for the War of 1812 Pension of her husband John West in 1847 in which Susannah May Coen was a witness. Lucinda was well known for her healing powers and was often called upon when sickness was upon the land.

Notes for Jonathan SPRAGUE: Jonathan was a farmer and millwright. He came to Marietta, Ohio (Washington Cty) with his father and brother and was given a contract to build one section of Campus Martius. He was at Waterford Garrison with other members of the Sprague family during the wars with the Native Americans who lived in the area (primarily Shawnee). He was shot by one native American, the bullet grazing his chest, leaving numerous holes in his shirt. Jonathan was tall, broad shouldered and lean. Sometime after the wars were over the Native American who shot at him was heard to say " I would have killed that Sprague had he not been so flat-chested!! ".One time, a group of Native Americans stole some cattle. Jonathan led a raid on the village, recovered the cattle, tied up the women and old men (the braves were gone), loaded the cows on a flatboat and were making their retreat when the braves returned. They followed, but would not attack. The creek where this occurred is said to be two miles south of Zanesville, Ohio emptying into the Muskingum River, which would put it somewhere in the neighborhood of Philo, Ohio.

After the wars, he moved to Adams Township in Washington County, Ohio near the town of Coal Run. Here he built a stone mansion where he lived until his death. He built the famous Island Mill, and operated it for many years. This mill created the boards that made the famous Blennerhassett House, on Blennerhassett Island, in the Ohio River. There is still preserved, in Marietta Ohio, a walnut cupboard made by Jonathan with a broad ax and drawing knife.

 

Jonathan Sprague, while not a religious man, was a man of strong moral character. His life was one of great usefulness to his community. His first wife, Sabra, was a lady of fine accomplishments and of unusual vivacity. His second wife, Sussannah, was the daughter of the first white woman to arrive in Marietta in 1788.

Notes for Joshua SPRAGUE: The Joshua Sprague family was originally from Rhode Island. They moved to Sackville, Nova Scotia prior to the revolutionary war. With sentiment running against their support of the revolution, the family left Nova Scotia with nothing and settled in at Smithfield, Rhode Island, with a subsequent move to East Hoosac, Massachusetts.

DURING THE REVOLUTION: Joshua enlisted as a private, in Col. Archibald Crary's Regiment - 1776 Major, Col. Joab Stafford's Independent Co., Mass., fought at the battle of Bennington, Aug 16, 1777. Served nine months, Col. Diamond's Regiment, Fish Kill. Served with Capt. Ast Barnes 1st Co., Col. Israel Chapen's 3rd Regt.

POST REVOLUTION: Boat Builder, with sons William & Jonathan. Moved to Simrell's Ferry, Monongahela River. Moved to Marietta, Ohio 22 June, 1788. Awarded a contract to build a blockhouse at Campus Martius fort, built same with his two sons help. Brought rest of family there in 1789. Settled at Waterford Garrison, on the Muskingum River. The family helped build the blockhouses at Fort Frye. William & Jonathan cleared Seven acres around Waterford, farming there, during the wars with the Native Americans. Joshua owned a farm in Waterford Township until 1812. Infirmities forced him to live with his son Jonathan in Adams Township for his and his 2nd wife's (Abigail Wilbur) remaining years. Abigail's grave is beside Joshua's, at the family graveyard, Coal Run, Ohio. His descendants at the time of his death were 163.

18 Feb 2002 - On a field trip to Coal Run, I verified headstone dates at the Sprague family graveyard, across the river from Coal run, Ohio, on the old family farm. The graveyard is located on the road that runs along the Muskingum River, across the river from Coal Run, Ohio. Follow this road north several miles until the road takes a sharp left curve, and goes up a hill toward some railroad tracks. On the left, before the tracks, is an old barn, behind which, is the Sprague Cemetery. When you get to the entrance to the Sprague Cemetery, turn your back to the entrance, find the railroad tracks, and follow them until you see a small farm house next to the tracks, across the main road you turned off of to get to the cemetery. If you follow the road that runs to the farm house, Devol Cemetery is just to the right of it, about 100 feet away. More Spragues are buried there. In my photos folder, referenced on page two of this web page, youwill find a ,jpg file called "sprague cemetries". It is a map to the cemeteries.

Notes for William SPRAGUE: Description: (From LDS record # AFN: 73NL-VG) Description: (From LDS record # AFN: 73NL-VG) The names of Ralph, Richard & William Sprague stand at the head of the list of Settlers in the record of the first meeting of the inhabitants of Charlestown, (See Green's Narrative.) 1645, chosen one of seven "selectmen" to order the prudential affairs of the town. 1662, constable and collector of town rates. 19 Oct, 1675, the date of his last will & testament.

The narrative below appears in the book"Sprague Families in America".

William, Ralph & Richard came to Salem, Mass. in 1628, at the interest of the Massachusetts Bay Company, paying their own way. Richard died without issue. Ralph & William became the heads of long lines of descendants in America. Soon after their arrival, they were commissioned by Governor Endicott of Salem to explore the area called "Mishawum". This was an area between the Mystic & Charles rivers occupied by a Native American tribe called the "Alberginians", whom they wintered with and made friends among. At a place not too far from the village, they and a man named Mr. Bright, an engineer with the company, laid out the original grid for the town they named "Charlestown".

The Honorable Edward Everett, in his oration commemorative of the bicentennial of the arrival of Winthrop at Charlestown, in speaking of the Sprague's said "They are the founders of the settlement in this place, and were persons of character, substance & enterprise; excellent citizens; generous benefactors; and the heads of a very large and respectable family of descendants."

Hosea Sprague wrote in 1833 "The tombstones of Lieutenant Ralph & Captain Richard Sprague, the first settlers of Charlestown, remain to this day; the inscription, however, is obliterated by the dropping of water.

Notes for Edward SPRAGUE: Description: LDS # AFN: 8TGW-FD Description: LDS # AFN: 8TGW-FD Description: LDS # AFN: 8TGW-FD Edward Sprague was a "fuller" by trade. His fulling mill was still standing at the turn of the century (1900). He is buried in the church yard in Dorset. His will was discovered in the papers of Captain William Sprague who died in 1832. The will was published in the 2nd edition of Hosea Sprague's book entitled "The Genealogy of the Spragues of Hingham, Massachusetts". On a trip to McConnelsville, Ohio 1n Feb 1996, I consulted a book called "The Charles Leroy (Roy) Sprague Family" which is in the Kate Love Simpson Library genealogy section. Two descendants of Edward traced his roots by going to England. It seems that Edwards true parents are a mystery. Two possible immigration routes into Upway, England are discussed with no concrete conclusion as from whence he came. There seems no reason to continue looking for earlier roots until someone, somewhere finds solid papers to substantiate Edward's father. I will not attempt to transcribe any part of the above book. It is interesting to read if you get over that way.

From the Rootsweb.com Sprague Database: "The Sprague Family From Dorset, To Massachusetts & Gibraltar.", by Joan Watkins, 1992, correspondent. Turbulent politics and religious strife were widespread in England as the reign of King Henry VIII came to an end in 1547. The subsequent decade did not improve as contenders for the throne vied for supremacy until Elizabeth I became queen. During this era, Tristram Sprague was baptized in 1550 in Fordington St. George Church, Dorchester, part of the Hundreds of Uggescomb which belonged to the Duchy of Cornwall. At that time the county of Dorset with its rolling green landscape of meadows and tillage was lush. Agriculture especially sheep and cattle thrived. It is believed that the Sprague family were by trade Fullers, so that the plentiful supply of fleece and local weaving enabled their business to flourish. Fulling is a craft going back to ancient times that is an essential part of finishing newly woven cloth. According to records there was a Mill situated on the banks of a stream drawn from the River Frome that ran through Dorchester in the vicinity of Fordington. It could be that this mill was used by the Sprague family for the purposes of Fulling. Also it is thought they lived nearby in a house on Mill Street (written about by Hardy as Mixen Lane.) According to a Census of 1641 a William Sprague lived in Mill Street. In 1575, Tristram married Elizabeth Colt of Puddletown. A son Edward was born in 1576. He grew to manhood in this prosperous atmosphere, and in 1595 Edward married Christian Holland and moved from Dorchester to live in Upway, near Weymouth. Their home was the "Mill House" situated near the River Wey, a small stream that worked the Mill for Fulling. (Note: The Mill House is still in existence and the village boasts the "Sprague Wishing Well", and a set of Bells given to the church nearby).

Joan Watkins, 1997 Since writing the foregoing saga base on the researches, etc. made by Mr. R. Macdonald circa 1965-72, and letters held by my mother, I have had further information and documentation from Richard E. Weber of USA on the Spragues. On the basis of Mr. Weber's documents and of my recent visits to the Dorchester Records office where I was able to examine micro-films and other details, I am now of the opinion that Tristram and Elizabeth were NOT the parents of Edward of Upway. Their lineage seems to be well defined in the Puddletown Records, with a succession of recorded baptisms each stating 'son or daughter of Tristram, but no mention of an "Edward". Very little is available for Fordington for that period. The only anomaly is the entry in both Fordington and Puddletown for the marriage of Tristram and Elizabeth, differing in dates (January - June 1575). It would seem to me that a John Spragg(ue) might have been the father, as that name features in so many future elder sons. A lot of the Dorchester records of that era no longer exist or are with the Ducy of Cornwall. Being unable myself to visit that office in London they cannot help me as at present they have no "personal name index". I have however made contact with the new owners of the Mill House in Upway (previously it was empty). They have recently bought the Freehold to the property and I am told that the documents go back to the sixteenth century. I hope one day to get to see them, but they are deposited with the Owners' Bank. I understand from them that there were two mills on the site, one for cloth and one for grain and the freehold was held by Merchants in London. The language and writing is in most cases rather obscure but perhaps further examination may give a clue as to when Edward became a lessee, etc. The claim put forward that Simon Sprague of Winsham, Chard was Edward of Upway's father differs from the extensive personal searches made by R. Macdonald. The only reference he records is from the "Somerset & Dorset Notes and Queries", Vol. 2, Page 54: "Simon Sprake, Clothier of Winsham, Chard was a Creditor of Sergeant Leonard of the Parish of Fordington 1575." There is no mention of administering the estate or that he had a son Edward in Upway. It seems strange that Ralph and his brothers went to Fordington after their father Edward's death rather than contact the Chard family, and nothing further appears to have been mentioned of that area during that time. I have enclosed a copy of a map of Dorchester where R. Macdonald has annotated that a William Sprague was living in Mill Street in the Census of 1641. Continuing with Joan Watkins' history, dated 1992. In 1597 a daughter Alice was born followed in 1599/1600 by Ralph (Ralfe) and subsequently four more sons, namely, Edward, Richard, Christopher and William in 1610. As the 16th Century gave way to the 17th, so the County of Dorset's farming community enjoyed years of prosperity. The main elements being dairy products and the raising of sheep for their wool. It was recorded then that the County produced the largest number of shorn wool packs in England. Most of it was spun and woven in the rural areas, giving employment to the outlying farms. The products were also exported through Weymouth to the Continent particularly Brittany and Normandy. Edward did not enjoy robust health and in 1614 he died at an untimely age of 38/40, leaving his wife Christian to look after the 6 children all under the age of 21. A copy of Edward's Will, translated from Latin was found, in which after commending his soul to the Almighty God, he bequeathed "to the Poor of Upway 10s, to the Church of Upway 19s. Unto Ralph my eldest son, one of the oldest pair of shears in my shop and one lesser pair called the quarell..." To each of his sons and daughter he left 20 (pounds) and all the rest of his chattels to his widow Christian. In a memorandum he added that "if the Living doth fall unto Ralph, then upon his father's request, he (Ralph) promises that his mother Christian shall enjoy the Living until he be 21 years." The Will also included a complete inventory of chattels, which included four score sheep, forty-two lambs, one horse, seven kyne, 3 yearlings and one pig and 4 1/2 acres of corn. (NOTE: this story is continued in the notes for son, Ralph Sprague.) From Richard Fricke. Edward of Upway, Dorset Co., England was a fuller by trade. He married Christian of Alice. "Ancestral File - Ver 4.11" Edward Sprague (AFN:8TGW-FD) "History of the Early Settlement of Bridgewater", by Nahum Mitchell. Ralph, Richard and William Sprague, were among the first comers and settlers in Massachusetts Colony in 1628. They were brothers, and settled at Charlestown, from whence William, the youngest, removed to Hingham. "The Brothers Ralph and William Sprague and Some of Their Descendants", from the April 1909 NEHGS Register, page 147. We know that Ralph and William Sprague were the sons of Edward Sprague, fuller, and his wife Christian, of Upway, county Dorset, England, as they are mentioned in his will, dated 16 June 1614. He had altogether six children, three of whom came to America. Of these three, only Ralph and William concern us. "The History of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations: Biographical", American Historical Society, Inc., 1920, pages 400-402. William Sprague, immigrant ancestor and progenitor, was a son of Edward Sprague, of Upway, Dorsetshire, England. Edward Sprague lived at Fordington, Dorsetshire, in early life, and was a fuller by trade. He married Christina, and died in 1614. His will was proved June 6, 1614, in the prerogative court at Canterbury, and copies of the document made at this time are still in possession of the family. Three of his sons, Ralph, Richard, and William came to America. In Prince's "Chronology" we find the following mention of the brothers: Among those who arrived at Naumkeag are Ralph Sprague, with his brothers Richard and William, who, with three or four more, were employed by Governor Endicott to explore and take possession of the country westward. They traveled through the woods to Charlestown, on a neck of land called Michawum, between Mystic and Charles rivers, full of Indians named Alberginians, with whom they made Peace." Ralph Sprague was about twenty-five years of age when he came to New England in 1631. Captain Richard Sprague commanded a company of the train band. On February 10, 1634, the order creating a Board of Selectmen was passed, and Richard and William Sprague signed it. Richard Sprague left no posterity. His sword which is named in his brother William's will, was extant in 1828. Edward Sprague lived in Upway (Upway), Dorsetshire, England, a small hamlet situated midway between Dorchester and Weymouth, the seaport, four miles from either town, and at the foot of the Ridgway Hill, where the River Way takes its rise. He was a fuller by trade, and it is claimed that his fulling mill of three hundred years ago has been but recently demolished. He possessed considerable property for his time, as his will and inventory show. That he was a man of quality, the preamble of his will bears testimony. Turbulent politics and religious strife were widespread in England as the reign of King Henry VIII came to an end in 1547. The subsequent decade did not improve as contenders for the throne vied for supremacy until Elizabeth I became queen. During this era, Tristram Sprague was baptized in 1550 in Fordington St. George Church, Dorchester, part of the Hundreds of Uggescomb which belonged to the Duchy of Cornwall. At that time the county of Dorset with its rolling green landscape of meadows and tillage was lush. Agriculture especially sheep and cattle thrived. It is believed that the Sprague family were by trade Fullers, so that the plentiful supply of fleece and local weaving enabled their business to flourish. Fulling is a craft going back to ancient times that is an essential part of finishing newly woven cloth. According to records there was a Mill situated on the banks of a stream drawn from the River Frome that ran through Dorchester in the vicinity of Fordington. It could be that this mill was used by the Sprague family for the purposes of Fulling. Also it is thought they lived nearby in a house on Mill Street (written about by Hardy as Mixen Lane.) According to a Census of 1641 a William Sprague lived in Mill Street. In 1575, Tristram married Elizabeth Colt of Puddletown. A son Edward was born in 1576. He grew to manhood in this prosperous atmosphere, and in 1595 Edward married Christian Holland and moved from Dorchester to live in Upway, near Weymouth. Their home was the "Mill House" situated near the River Wey, a small stream that worked the Mill for Fulling. (Note: The Mill House is still in existence and the village boasts the "Sprague Wishing Well", and a set of Bells given to the church nearby).

Joan Watkins, 1997 Since writing the foregoing saga base on the researches, etc. made by Mr. R. Macdonald circa 1965-72, and letters held by my mother, I have had further information and documentation from Richard E. Weber of USA on the Spragues. On the basis of Mr. Weber's documents and of my recent visits to the Dorchester Records office where I was able to examine micro-films and other details, I am now of the opinion that Tristram and Elizabeth were NOT the parents of Edward of Upway. Their lineage seems to be well defined in the Puddletown Records, with a succession of recorded baptisms each stating 'son or daughter of Tristram, but no mention of an "Edward". Very little is available for Fordington for that period. The only anomaly is the entry in both Fordington and Puddletown for the marriage of Tristram and Elizabeth, differing in dates (January - June 1575). It would seem to me that a John Spragg(ue) might have been the father, as that name features in so many future elder sons. A lot of the Dorchester records of that era no longer exist or are with the Ducy of Cornwall. Being unable myself to visit that office in London they cannot help me as at present they have no "personal name index". I have however made contact with the new owners of the Mill House in Upway (previously it was empty). They have recently bought the Freehold to the property and I am told that the documents go back to the sixteenth century. I hope one day to get to see them, but they are deposited with the Owners' Bank. I understand, from them, that there were two mills on the site. One was for cloth, and one for grain, and the freehold was held by Merchants in London. The language and writing is in most cases rather obscure but perhaps further examination may give a clue as to when Edward became a lessee, etc. The claim put forward that Simon Sprague of Winsham, Chard was Edward of Upway's father differs from the extensive personal searches made by R. Macdonald. The only reference he records is from the "Somerset & Dorset Notes and Queries", Vol. 2, Page 54: "Simon Sprake, Clothier of Winsham, Chard was a Creditor of Sergeant Leonard of the Parish of Fordington 1575." There is no mention of administering the estate or that he had a son Edward in Upway's. It seems strange that Ralph and his brothers went to Fordington after their father Edward's death rather than contact the Chard family, and nothing further appears to have been mentioned of that area during that time. I have enclosed a copy of a map of Dorchester where R. Macdonald has annotated that a William Sprague was living in Mill Street in the Census of 1641. Also, an overall map of Dorset, and Somerset, where the many variations of Sprake - Spragg were recorded as living in the sixteenth Century. I believe R. Macdonald visited as many of the sites as possible to check on any information

Notes found in the McConnelsville Herald in 1891 suggest that after she was widowed by William, she married John Kinkead and was the mother of five children in total. There is a conflict as to whether she was born in New Hampshire or Delaware.

He was born on June 14, 1762, (headstone says 1763), in Exeter, Rockingham, New Hampshire.

He died on May 25, 1834, in Morgan County, Ohio. Burial: Crossroads Cemetery, Morgan County, Ohio.

He was the son of U168. William HOYT and U169. Sarah SMITH.

He married U85. Olive BROWN, on June 03, 1788 in Conway, NH.

Notes for Nicholas Smith HOYT: There is confusion on whether Nicolas was born in 1762 or 1763. Was a private in Captain Butler's Company, Colonel Bartlett's NH Regiment. 9 months-22 days -1780. Pensioned on roll "O" 4 Mar 1831. Certificate # S2618 19 Oct 1832, Reference Book D, Vol 2, Page 133. He appeared before common pleas court, Morgan County, on 19 Jul 1832, he a resident of Centre Township, aged 69 years. Stated he enlisted in the army with a man named Brown,1781, was marched to Exeter, and sent to Gallows Hill, N, where the army was then encamped. Joined Colonel Scammels regiment, Captain Farewell's company. Major Morrill was attached to the regiment, which was the 2nd regiment of the NH line. He states he was born Exeter, 1762-3. He was living in Deerfield Township, Rockingham County, NH at the time of enlistment. He lived two years, same location, after end of war, moved to Kennebunk, York Co. , ME. Then one year again in Deerfield, NH. Moved to Conway, NH, two years, two years in PA at the forks of the York River, then 21 years at Waterford, Washington County, Ohio, then 17 years at his current location in Centre Township, Morgan County, Ohio. He hereby relinquishes any claims whatever to any pensions or annuities except the present one, and declares he is not on the pension rolls in any agency in any other state. Signed Nicholas Hoit. Proven and accepted by the Common Pleas Court of Morgan County, Ohio, 19th day of July , 1832. Perley B. Johnson, Clerk

Wednesday, Oct 15, it was satisfactorily proven to the Morgan County Court, in open session, by the oaths of Judiah Higgins and James Heeley, that Nicholas Hoit, of said county, died on the 25th day of May, 1834. That Mary Hoit was the wife of Nicholas Hoit at the time of his death and is now his surviving widow, and that said Nicholas Hoit was, at the time of his death, a pensioner of the United States. Paid up Pension was granted to the widow, Mary Hoyt, on April 9, 1835. Soldier 1ST married in Conway, NH, 3 June 1788, to Olive Brown, by Nathan Potter, Clergy. Olive was the daughter of James Luke Brown, who died in Muskingum County, Ohio. Mr Hoyt(Hoit) 2nd married Mary Morris, Morgan County, Ohio, by Mahlon Wilson, Justice of Peace, Book A-P 200. 3 children, William, Amasa and Alvey.
