DANIEL CLEAL'S story began in England.
The earliest we know of the CLEAL family is that
James CLEAL married Jane ?? sometime before 1755.
He died in 1787 in Somerset, England. She died in 1814 at Horton, Ilminster, Somerset
They had James, Jane (c.1755), Joseph (c.1757), Benjamin (1761)
Their eldest son James CLEAL (sometimes referred to as Jacob) was a Clothier
He married Sarah Gawler and had ten children:

Sophia (c.1792), Phoebe (c.1794), Arabella (c.1796), James CLEAL (b.1799), Hannah (b.1802), Thomas (b.1804),
Daniel (1806-1882), Jacob (1809-1898), Jane (b.1811) and Sarah (b.1814) She was living at Donyatt, Somerset when christened at 1830.

DANIEL CLEAL
was born on September 1st, 1806
in Somerset, England
He was christened in April 1807
(see left) at the Broadway Meeting Independent,
Broadway, Somerset, England

Daniel Cleal married Catherine Lantham
in 1830 at St. George's Church,
off Hanover Square, in London (see right)

Daniel then married Jane Elizabeth Northcott (1838-1909)
His occupation listed as Confectioner and Baker
Daniel died in 1882 aged 75 in Melbourne (V.9243)
and Jane died in 1909 aged 71 at Malvern.
Both are buried at the Melbourne General Cemetery

Their children: Daniel (born in North America),
James Northcott (born c.1869 in South America),

William (born 1875 in South America),

It is reasonably obvious that Daniel and Jacob
followed each other everywhere,
and that Daniel seems to 'disappear' then 'turn up again.
We think he suffered from 'gold fever'
(ie. he chased gold rushes around the world).

We am fairly certain that this is the Daniel Cleal
who died in Australia in 1882.

1868 Daniel Cleal is recorded as being "late restaurant keeper, Victoria, British Columbia"
That same year P.Byrom is recorded there (late Cleal's Restaurant) From other information we have,
at least one of Daniel's descendants
either returned to or remained in America,
as a Charles Acton Cleal is known to have
descendants in California by the name of Piazza .
