John HOLMES was born in 1819 at Ballynarig, near Limavady, Londonderry, Northern Ireland, to James Holmes and Jane (nee Gilfillan). We have very little information about John's parents. Jane may have been a second wife for James Holmes (this is still to be confirmed). CLICK HERE to learn more about John HOLMES Letitia Ann's daughter Alice (McAlister) discovered a number of letters written by John's family (both Holmes and Gilfillan) in Ireland, to John Holmes dating from 1860. To read these letters CLICK HERE The Gilfillans lived about a mile out of Limavady and the Holmes home was about another mile further out on a hill, with a fine view and at the same time nicely shaded by trees. It stood about 100 yards from the road and opposite the door was what was called in the North of Ireland a "spout" (a little rill or waterfall trained through a hollow log so as to form a little cascade). That forms the water supply for the house, beautiful clear water and an unfailing supply." Samuel (cousin/uncle who also wrote to our John) lived still further up. ![]() NEW INFORMATION ADDED June 2003: We now understand that John (1819) had two brothers James (1823) and David Holmes (1828). We have just discovered that James (1823) and his family moved to Yorkshire c.1889 but have yet to find anything about David. |
LETITIA JENKINSON The Fenagh Parish records confirm that Letitia was born on July 17, 1831 to William JENKINSON and Ann (nee Mathers) in Fenagh, County Carlow. Their children: William (1825), Ellen (1828), Ann (1829), Letitia (1831) and Mary Ann (1833). We are especially grateful to James Keppel who lives just 10 miles from where Letitia lived. We discovered he has a 'Jenkinson' in his family from the same area. He visited the local minister and passed on the above information to us. Click the map below to see a view of FENAGH VILLAGE. ![]() In 1856 Letitia left Fenagh, County Carlow and travelled to Australia on board the 'Ocean Chief' which arrived in Melbourne in 1856. Sir Charles Gavin Duffy travelled on board the same ship and described the voyage in his journal. To read this journal CLICK HERE. |
