DEATH OF MANOEL DA FONTE ........(1827-1898)
Mr Manoel Da Fonte, an old resident of the district, died at his residence, Green Arbor Estate, Wareek, on Saturday morning (July 2nd, 1898). Deceased, who was 71 years of age, enjoyed the best of health until six weeks ago, when he complained of being unwell and consulted a medical gentleman. All that was possible was done for him, but he gradually sank and passed away to his long home on Saturday morning, the cause of death being failure of the heart. He was a kind, warmhearted, generous man, and was always held in the highest esteem by all who were acquainted with him. He was a resident of Wareek for the past 30 years, previous to which he lived at Adelaide Lead. He leaves a widow and grown-up family of six sons and two daughters. The funeral will take place today leaving Wareek at 11.30 am and passing through Maryborough at half-past 2. The members of the Loyal Maryborough Lodge, M.U.I.O.O.F., of which the deceased had been a member for 36 years, are requested to meet at the lodge room at 2 o'clock to join the cortege on its reaching Maryborough.

MARYBOROUGH ADVERTISER JUNE 18th, 1888.

OBITUARY MRS ELLEN DaFONTE (1840-1936)
Maryborough lost probably its oldest resident yesterday with the death
in the hospital of Mrs Ellen DaFonte, at the advanced age of 96 years.
The passing of Mrs DaFonte will be much regretted, because she was
a lady of gracious personality and widely known to old residents.
Mrs DaFonte retained all her faculties in a remarkable manner, and although her health had been failing during the past 12 months, it was only of recent weeks that she was unable to follow her pastime of knitting and reading.

The late Mrs DaFonte was born in Leslie, Scotland in 1840 as Ellen Forbes. As a young woman she was associated with the Buchanna Institute, Scotland, where she had charge of 500 teaching the art of knitting.
In 1886 Ellen Forbes came to Australia, and in 1892 she married the late
Mr. Manoel DaFonte, then a widower, and settled at Wareek, where the late Mr. DaFonte was one of the early land settlers. Mrs DaFonte resided at Wareek until after the death of her husband.

In 1910 she enjoyed a trip to her birthplace in Scotland, and, returning to Australia 12 months later, she settled permanently in Maryborough, remaining here until her death. She resided with her step-son, Mr Albert DaFonte, in Inkerman St. About a month age she became seriously ill, and a fortnight ago was admitted to the hospital.

Deceased was the step-mother of Mary (Mrs Smith, Dandenong), Grace (Mrs Romey, Ballarat), John (Kyneton), Albert (Maryborough), Matthew (Melton) and Claude (Wareek). Albert served with the A.I.F. during the War, and two other step-sons, Emmanuel and Joaquim (who conducted a saddlery business in Maryborough for several years) died many years ago. A large number of step-grandchildren and step-great-grand children also survive. The remains are being interred in the Maryborough Cemetery this afternoon.
