Birth year based on the only place he can fit into the census records.  He has not been located on the 1850 census and disappears after his father's death.

Notes for Elizabeth Dillow:
Birth date estimated on her age given on the 1880 census as 64.  She had said she was 30 on the 1850 census but this would conflict with the age of her sister Margaret.  It appears that Elizabeth "Betsey" never married, but there is the fact that she did not show up on the 1860 or 1870 census.  She is single in 1880 and working as a servant for D.M. & Sallie Hamilton in Mechanicsburg, Bland County, VA.

Notes for Margaret Dillow:
Birth date estimate based on her age gine on the 1870 census as 50.  She apparently never married.  She bought 113 acres from her brother Addison in 1854 after their father's death and sold it back in 1870. On the 1870 census she is single and working as a servant for Eli & Sophia Leedy in Bland County, VA.  Eli Leedy was Abraham Dillow's next door neighbor judging by the 1840 census.  A lawsuit filed against Margaret in 1880 by her brother, Addison, over some court cost issue shows she was alive and still unmarried at least at that time.

	10	ix.	William Dillow, born March 11, 1822 in Wythe County, VA; died Aft. 1880 in Bland County, VA.  He married (1) Nicali Deavor December 13, 1859 in Wythe County, VA; born April 10, 1838 in Wythe County, VA; died Bet. 1870 - 1880.  He married (2) Virginia B. Pauley January 1883 in Bland County, VA; born Abt. 1847 in Bland County, VA; died Unknown.

Notes for William Dillow:
William Dillow served in the Civil War in the Confederate Army.  His unit was Company F, 8th Regimental Cavalry Brigade "Bland Rangers".  He enlisted August 8, 1861 in Bland County, VA and served under Colonel William Neel Harmon.  William Dillow was paroled from Charleston, West Virginia on April 28, 1865.  His age listed at the end of the war as 45 was incorrect, he was actually 43.  His first wife Nicali died before 1880 and may have died before 1870 since they were not found on the 1870 Wythe County census.  They had no know children.  
In 1880, William lived as a boarder with C.C. & Nancy Thomas of Bland County, VA.  His age was listed as 68 but he was actually 58.

Mary "Polly" Dillow Totten and husband Peter lived in Totten Hollow near the Wythe-Washington County line, which became Smyth County, VA in 1832.  Peter was a farmer.  After Peter's death in 1860, Mary moved the family to Missouri and eventually settled in Dekalb County, Missouri.

He served with his unit until his honorable discharge on October 8, 1864 at Wheeling, WVa.  Abraham and family settled in Greenup County, Kentucky after his marriage in the mid 1860's.  He remained there until he went to Champaign County, Illinois during the 1880's.  Abe and his family returned to Kentucky and settled in Lewis County in 1891.

Dillow was the daughter of Catherine Dillow and was born out of wedlock.  Her mother married in later years to Francis M. Joyner.  Nancy's family knew she had a brother named Jack Dillow, possibly a half brother.   Nancy Ann was nicknamed Nannie and she came to the Pleasant Hill Area when she was 13 years old.   Nancy Ann (Dillow) Hale suffered a stroke and died February 25, 1934 at age 80.  Her funeral was conducted by Rev. D.E. Fields at the Hon Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill, Cass Co., MO.  Among the family pictures Nancy left were several pictures of different Joyner families.

James was French Canadian born in Simco, Canada and lived there until he was about 25 years old.  He had been living with his grandfather, his mother was dead.  He first went to Michigan and worked there during the Civil War.  The man James worked for in Michigan was always on the move. James could read, but he couldn't write.  He never returned to Canada. After the Civil War he came to Missouri and settled in the Pleasant Hill, Cass County, communituy.  At the time of his death he had no living relatives. (Source:  Thomas Edward Hale)
  James Hale and Nancy Dillow worked for Dr. J.T. Russell family when they married.  The Russell home was on the west side of Harris Road at the county line.   In 1884 when Thomas Wesley Hale was 12 years old his parents, James and Nancy, moved to Harper, KS and lived there for two years.  There was a drought on the farm and they almost starved so they moved back to Cass County, MO. (Source:  Thomas Edward Hale)
  James Edward Hale use to like to make his trips to Pleasant Hill in the mornings.  He always tended to his business then went directly home.  He was an industrious man and didn't waste his time.  His neighbors and old acquaintances thought he was always a freindly person.  (Obit.)
  When James Edward Hale died September 23, 1923 at age 81 the roads were almost impassable because of heavy rains.  His funeral was conducted by Rev. W.J. Laws, pastor of the Baptist Church and interment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Thomas Wesley Hale married Mary Alice Davidson.  He bought his farm (120 A.) with the money his wife Mary Alice (Davidson) Hale inherited. (Source:  Thomas Edward Hale)  Later Thomas Hale bought other land in the area.  He knew how to make money with his farming and live stock raising.
  The following printing appears in the History of Cass County 1917, p. 815:
  "Thomas Hale, a prosperous and well known farmer and stockman of Pleasant Hill township is a native son of Cass County.  He was born in 1872 and is a son of James and Nannie (Dillow) Hale.  The father is a native of Canada and came to Cass County and settled in Big creek township shortly after the close of the Civil War.  He and his wife now reside in Cass County.  They are the parents of three children, as follows:  William, farmer, Big Creek township; James, farmer, Pleasant Hill township; and Thomas, the subject of this sketch.
  Thomas Hale was reared on his father's farm and educated in the public schools of Cass County.  He has made farming and stock raising his life's occupation, and has given the science of agriculture and animal husbandry careful study.  His well-kept place and splendid residence and other farm buildings bear all the earmarks of a progressive Twentieth Century farmer.  He is an extensive cattle and hog feeder and for twenty years has been very successful in this field of endeavor.  He has shipped annually from two to four carloads of cattle and hogs.  In 1901, Mr. Hale bought two hundred acres of land at twenty-eight dollars an acre, and a few years later he added one hundred acres to his original purchase at a cost of sixty dollars an acre.  His land is all well improved and in an excellent state of cultivation and his is one of the valuable farms of Cass County.  It is well supplied with water, which makes of it an ideal place for stock raising.
  Mr. Hale was married in 1894 to Miss Mollie Davidson, a daughter of William Davidson, a Cass County pioneer, who located at Pleasant Hill shortly after the Civil War.  To Mr. and Mrs. Hale have been born two children, Carrie and Thomas, both residing at home."
  One day Thomas Wesley Hale helped Johnnie Vensan saw wood and he got his finger in the saw and cut it.  Before he cut his finger he had been milking the cow and feeding the horses while his son Tom prepared breakfast.  After cutting his finger he couldn't milk the cow so he would lay in bed until breakfast was prepared, and his son would feed the horses and milk the cow before breakfast, then prepare the meal.  After this happened Thomas Wesley never got out of bed before breakfast. (Source:

  In later years Thomas Hale's health began to fail.  One day Thomas and his son Tom had been sawing wood and when it was time to quit for the day, son Tom took the tractor and saw to the shed while his dad carried some wood to the house for the wood furnace in the basement.  There was a shute on the south side of the house for putting wood into and the wood would then fall to the basement where they later would stack it neatly to burn.  Thomas Wesley Hale always feed the cattle after a day's work while his son did other chores.  When his son, Tom, came to the house his father was sitting in a chair resting. He ask his dad if he had fed the cattle yet and he replied, "No, I'm resting."  Young Tom went back outdoors to do another chore, then returned and his father was still sitting so son Tom went to the feedlot and fed the cattle.  The next morning Thomas Wesley Hale told his son he could feed the cattle that morning and Thomas Wesley never went to the feedlot again, apparently his heart was bothering him then.   Thomas Wesley Hale's heart failed him at home October 22, 1952 less than a month after the death of his daughter, Carrie Annette (Hale) Johnson.

Mary Alice (Molly) Davidson married Thomas Wesley Hale February 28, 1894.  She was a good wife and grandmother.  When her parents both died in less than a year, Mollie and Tom Hale became the guardians of her two brothers who were left without their parents at an early age.  They both were kind to them and treated them as their own children.
  Molly had gall bladder problems and finally surgery, but the poison from her gall bladder affected her health.  Thinking her health might improve, Mollie went to California two different times and boarded out with a Mrs. Brown, whom she knew.  Her first stay was May 1922 through October 1922 then again in November 1923 through May 1, 1924.  Perhaps she thought her illness might be caused by tuberculosis which had taken the life of her mother at an early age.  However Molly never had it and her problem was caused more from the bad gall bladder and high blood pressure.  For many years Molly used a cane to get around and also a wheelchair to do her work in the house.
