Mary Dillow was born circa 1811 in Wythe County, VA, the daughter of Abram and Elizabeth Steele Dillow. Mary died in the late 1870's in DeKalb County, Missouri. She married Peter Totten circa 1829 in Wythe County, VA. Peter was born circa 1810 in Wythe County, VA, the son of John and Druscilla Totten Sr. Peter died circa 1860 in Smyth County, VA. Mary "Polly" Dillow Totten and husband Peter lived in Totten Hollow near the Wythe-Washington County line, which became Smyth County, VA in 1832. Peter worked as a farmer. He and Mary had nine children: Samuel born about 1830; William born about 1832; Drusilla born about 1835, married Moses Woods; Elizabeth born about 1837; Lucinda about 1840; Sarah Emaline born January 24, 1846, married Edward Bunker; John Montgomery born November 10, 1847, married Eugenia Evelyn Majors; James born about 1849; and Franklin born January 1858. After Peter's death in 1860, Mary Dillow Totten moved her family west to Chillicothe, Missouri. Many of the children married there and some remained there the rest of their lives. Others moved further west to the states of Washington, Oregon and California. Below are the only known existing photos of Peter and Mary Dillow Totten's children.
Sarah Totten Bunker was born January 24, 1846 in Chatam Hill, Smyth County, Virginia. She died January 16, 1918 in Cascade Locks, Oregon. She married Edward William Bunker December 25, 1868 in Dekalb County, Missouri. She and Edward had six children: Clarence Oscar, Clara, Harry Folger, Ouida Jinks, Mary Pearl and Alice Emaline.
John Montgomery Totten was born November 10, 1847 in Chatam Hill, Smyth County, Virginia. He died May 24, 1909 in Fall City, Washington. He married Eugenia E. Majors October 9, 1879 in Dekalb County, Missouri. He and Eugenia had nine children: Ethel Floy, Ralph Valentine, Harry Leroy, Bryan Courtney, Earl Clare, Geraldine Mae, Alice Lorane, Lillian Idress and Lillias. John was buried in Fall City Cemetery, King County, Washington.
