John Doughty Holmes(1793-1869)
After his mother Rebecca's death in 1793, John was raised by his aunt Martha and her husband Robert Doughty
Record of the Second Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia entered February 19, 1796: John Doughty b. June 16, 1793, Thomas & Rebecca Holmes both his parents being dead,
John* and Martha Doughty adopted the child and presented him for baptism.

This baptismal record was obviously wrong because John and Martha should read Robert and Martha and in the early 1800's John D. left Philadelphia to join his father Thomas in North Carolina.
John D. Holmes(1793-1869) married Sally(Salome) Krider(Crider) in Rowan County, N. C. in 1815. She was the daughter of Jacob Krider(Crider). It perhaps should be noted at this point that Krider(Crider is a German name). John D. is recorded in the 1820 Rowan County, N. C. as John Holmes.
Their Son Marquis Holmes was born in N. C. in 1827. Sometime before 1830 they relocated to Pickens County, Alabama. The John D. Holmes's household is recorded in the 1830 Pickens County, Alabama census. Also in 1830 yet another son John Y. Holmes(1830-1896) was born.  Their third son Jacob (b. 1828) was named after Sally's father.
Again the westward movement resumed. Sometime before 1840 the John D. Holmes household is moved to Monroe County, Mississippi where they are recorded in the 1840 Census. In Monroe County, Miss. in 1849 a grandchild was born to John D. Holmes. The grandchild is our John Y. Holmes(1849-1899) who is buried at Ash Creek Cemetery in Azle,Texas. The 1850 and 1860 Mississippi census show John D. in Okstiffaeha County with his wife Salome 59, daughter Susannah 17, daughter Harriet 15 and son John 20 at Household 227. His occupation is listed as English teacher and school teacher respectively.
Also listed are his grown sons Marquis and wife Lucinda with our John Y. at Household 221 and Jacob 32, b North Carolina with wife Sarah and 4 yr old son William at Household 228.
John Y(1830-1896)  and Jacob have Confederate service records.
John D. Holmes(1793-1869) and his wife Salome are buried at Lost Church Cemetery which is 2.7 miles west of Longview, Miss., in Okstiffaeha County. The person or persons who read and recorded their tombstones inscriptions wrote "J.D. Holmes d. July 23, 1869" and "Salon, wife of J.D. Homes d. Nov. 23, 1888."
