Richard and Patsy Brown Helmer

Richard E. HELMER was born 5 February 1874 in the area which is now called Beat Five in Lee County, the third child of Civil War veteran Joseph Helmer and wife Lucy (Tindle) Helmer. Richard married Patsy Saphira BROWN of Giddings on 29 April 1895. Patsy was born 24 March 1877 to B. L. ‘Bev’ BROWN and Priscilla J. MCWRIGHT, but Priscilla died when Patsy was a baby, and later Bev Brown married Nancy L. Teague who helped raise Patsy and her two brothers, Walter and Arthur. Also Patsy had 3 half brothers, Charley, Ransom and Robert. According to Patsy, her stepmother Nancy Teague was very good to her and her brothers while they were growing up.

According to the 1880 census, Patsy’s parents came to Texas from Missouri and Patsy’s grandparents were originally from Virginia. Patsy Brown taught school for a short time in Lee County, but she married at a young age and had a full-time job at home. I assume giving birth to ten children, nine of them reaching adulthood, would be considered a full-time job.

Patsy’s uncle William ‘Bill’ Brown was a deputy sheriff when Bill Longley was hanged in 1878 and from 1885 to 1888, he served as Sheriff of Lee County. As far as we know, Bill Brown was not related to the well-known Jim Brown, who preceded Bill as sheriff from 1877 to 1884.

The children born to Richard and Patsy were, Walter, the twins Ola, and Lola, Ruby, Floyd, Priscilla, Samuel, Curtis, Richard Earl.

Richard and Patsy purchased a 70+ acre farm in the Old Dime Box area around 1918 and added a couple of rooms to the small house that was on the property and that’s where most of the children were raised.
