George Barber, Jr.

George Barber Jr, born 1786 in Wilkes County, Georgia, was the youngest child of George and Margaret (Watkins) Barber.

George married Elizabeth Reynolds 11 May 1806 in Clarke County, Georgia. Elizabeth was the daughter of Spencer Reynolds.

War of 1812 Service of George Barber Jr.

The State of Texas  )            On this the 1st day of July A. D. one 
County of Shelby    )     thousand eight hundred and fifty one, personally
                          appeared before me a Justice of the Peace, 
within and for the county and state aforesaid George Barber, aged sixty 
five years, a resident citizen of the County of Shelby in the State of 
Texas, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the 
identical George Barber who was a private in the Company Commanded by 
Captain William Ford in ____ Regiment of Georgia Troops (infantry) 
commanded first by an officer who died in camp (and whose name is not now 
recollected) and afterward said regiment was commanded by Col. Newman 
under General Floyd in the war with Great Britain declared by the United 
States on the 13 June 1812, that he volunteered in Lexington, Oglethorpe 
County, Georgia, on or about the first of September A. D. 1813, for the 
term of six months and continued in actual service for the term of six 
months and was honorably discharged at Lexington, Oglethorpe County in the 
State of Georgia on or about the first day of March A. D. 1814, as will 
appear by the Muster Rolls of said company.  He declares that he received 
his pay for the full six months, but does not recollect whether or not 
any written discharge was given to him if it was not it was only from 
neglect and not from any other cause, and if it was given it has long 
since been lost.

He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to 
which he may be entitled under the act granting bounty land to certain 
officers and soldiers who have been in the Military service of the United 
States prior September 28th, A. D. 1850.

man who served as aforesaid and that he is of the age above stated.

                             personally appeared before me a Notary Public
witness and for the County and State aforesaid Elizabeth Barber aged 66
years a resident of Nacogdoches County in the State of Texas who being 
Sworn according to law declares that she is the widow of George Barber 
deceased who was a private in the Company Commanded by Captain Ford in 
the Georgia Regiment of Militia men Commanded by General Floyd in the War 
of 1812 against the Creek Indians.  That her said husband volunteered at 
Lexington, Oglethorpe County, Georgia on or about the 7th day of August 
A. D. 1813 for the term of six months and was honorably discharged at 
Fort Hawkins on the first day of February A. D. 1814-- as will appear by 
the Muster rolls of Said Company as the discharge wa forwarded to the 
Department with a former declaration he made out by himself in his 
lifetime and recieved a land Warrant for 80 acres No. 35 527.  She 
further states that she was married to the said George Barber in Clarke 
County, Georgia on the 11th day of May A. D. 1806 by one Alex Hall a 
Justice of the Peace for Clark County, Georgia and that her name before 
her said marriage was Elizabeth Reynolds and that she has no children 
under the age of 21 years.  Surviving that her said husband died at his 
residence in Shelby County, Texas on the 2nd day of July A. D. 1854 and that 
she is now a widow at the date of executing this her declaration for the 
purpose of obtaining the Bounty land to which she may be entitled under the 
act approved March 3d, 1855.

the State of Texas upon our oaths declare that the foregoing declaration 
was signed and acknowledged by Elizabeth Barber in our presence and that 
we believe from the appearance and Statements of the applicant the she is 
the identical person she represents herself to be.

George Barber Jr. died 2 July 1854, Shelby County, Texas. his widow Elizabeth was living in 1860 in Nacogdoches County, Texas with her daughter, Mrs. Benjamin Turner Hudman.

  1.  Samuel Reynolds Barber, born 1809-1810, Oglethorpe County, Ga.,
      married Adaline Flake Perry ca. 1829.  Samuel was first treasurer of
      Parker County, Texas, and he also signed a petition for that county's
      formation.62  Samuel died 1881, buried Barber Mountain near Mineral 
      Wells Texas.  Adaline was the sister of General William Flake Perry.

      B.  Dr. George Perry Barber, M. D., born 22 August 1834, Georgia,
          married Sarah Ann Amanda Smith 1859.  (see chapter 10)

      C.  Solomon P. Barber, born 9 November 1837, Chambers County, Alabama,
          died 5 August 1856, buried Dean Cemetery, Weatherford, Texas.

      D.  Samuel C. Barber, born 31 October 1839, Chambers County, Alabama,
          died 20 February 1857, buried in same grave with his brother 
          Solomon.64

      E.  Olivia A. Barber, born 1842, Chambers County, Alabama, married 
          H. H. McLean, 24 January 1860, Palo Pinto County, Texas.  H. H.
          McLean died prior to 1880.65

      F.  Milton Flake Barber, born 11 May 1848, Chambers County, Alabama,
          was first county clerk of Throckmorton County, Texas. He made
          his home with the Barber Watkins Reynolds family for several years.
          He married Nancy Jane Franz, October 1870.  Flake Barber died 
          10 January 1929, Floyd County, Texas.66

      G.  Hiram Barber, born 1851, Texas, lived with the B. W. Reynolds
          family near Rocky Ford, Colorado in 1874, where he was a school
          teacher for the younger Reynolds children.  When most of the
          Reynolds family moved back to Texas in November 1875, Hiram Barber
          and Glenn Reynolds went prospecting for gold in Colorado.67

      H.  Mildred Josepine Barber, born 1854, Texas, married Sanford Boon.
          She died in 1903.68

      I.  Oliver W. Barber, born 1856, Texas, married LUcie Haynes.

      J.  Louisa Barber married Steve Jones.  She died 14 May 1950 in 
          St. Louis, Missouri.


  2.  Elizabeth Barber, born about 1812, married Burwell H. Hambrick.
      Burwell owned the first cotton gin in Van Zandt County. The site is 
      on the tract of land known as the old "Cherokee Battleground," on 
      which the last battle of with the Cherokee Indian was fought and 
      where Chief Bowles was killed. Burwell later moved to Tyler, Texas 
      where he, George Humphry and Jim Douglas opened a cotton thread mill 
      with 1,200 spindles located two blocks north of the town square. In 
      1868 the thread mill was totally destroyed by fire. No insurance was 
      carried and Burwell never recovered from the loss and died leaving a 
      small estate. Burwell is buried in or near Tyler, and his wife, 
      Elizabeth, is buried on the Hambrick Estate.  Their children:

      Eliza was born 16 July 1827, died 13 November 1910, buried Courtland
      Cemetery, Cass County, Texas. George is buried in Courtland too.  He
      served in Co. I, 3rd Texas Cavalry, CSA. (new info: Lillie Ruby)

          Law, 13 November 1876, Cass County, Texas.  She died in 1940 and
          is buried in Law's Chapel Cemetery, Cass County, Texas.

Deed of Trust    )    this 20th day of July Eighteen hundred and
                      Thirty Seven, between George Barber of the county
and State aforsaid, of the one part and William Center of the same place 
as trustee of Elizabeth Barber, the wife of said George Barber, and also
as trustee of Nancy Center formerly Nancy Barber, Phoebe Barber, Margaret 
Barber, and Phineas Barber, legitimate children of said George Barber.
Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the natural love and 
affection which I the said George Barber have and bear toward my said 
wife Elizabeth, and my said children Nancy Center formerly Nancy Barber, 
Phoebe Barber, Margaret Barber and Phineas Barber aforsaid named and for 
and in consideration of the sum of one Dollar in hand paid, do by these 
presens, grant, give, amin, convey and confirm and deliver unto the said 
William Center trustee as aforsaid the following negroes to wit, Willis, 
a man about twenty eight years old -- Nathan about about twetny one years 
of age, Pender a negro woman about forty five years of age, which said 
negroes and their increase and profits I the said George Baber do by thee 
presents warrand and defend from mysefl my hears and assigns and form the 
claim of all person or persons whatsoever utno the said WIlliam Center as 
trustee as aforsaid in fee simple.

In testimoney whereof I the said George Barber have her unto set my hand 
and seal the day and year aforsaid.

Deed of Gift  George Barber to Louisa Lucas, wife of Bazil Lucus.

Know all men by these presents that I George Barber of the County of 
Franklin and State of Tennessee, for and in consideration of the love and 
natural affection which I have and do bear unto my daughter Louisa M. 
Lucus, wife of Bazil E. Lucus of the County and State aforsaid have and 
by these presents do give, grant bargain and sell and deliver unto my 
said daughter, for her own exclusive use and benefit, during her natural 
life, free from the control of her said husband or any other person ,the 
following negro slaves, to wit, Jenney,aged about 50 years and Harreitte 
aged about two years and after the death of my said daughter the 
remainder in said slaves and their increase, I do hereby for the 
consideration aforsaid, give, grant, bargain and sell unto the children of 
my said daughter, who may be living at the time of her death and the 
children of such as may be dead (if any) it being the true intent and 
mening of these presents to give to said daughter during life, the use 
only of said Slaves and their increase so as not to be subject to the 
control of any other person or persons and after her death to be disposed 
of in manner aforesaid.  Witness my hand and seal this 5th day of 
November 1835.
