I just checked the 2nd chapter & noticed that Greensby W. Barber's 3rd wife was MRS MARY T. CONGER - she was NOT a MRS!! Her name was Mary Tappan Conger, daughter of Rev. David Conger & Elizabeth Young, who are buried here in Athens. Mary was their 2nd child, b. 9-28-1834, d. 1-2-1895!! There is an 8-volume history of the Conger family by Charles L. Conger!! David was son of Abijah Conger & Phoebe Tappan, b. 3-6-1808 in Morris Co., NJ, d. 9-26-1890 in Clarke Co., GA, m. Elizabeth Young of Maryville, TN on 3-1-1831. Abijah Conger was b. 5-4-1782 in Rockaway, NJ, d. 2-4-1866 in Athens, GA, m. Elizabeth Ayres about 1781. She was dau. of Robert Ayres, b. 9-22-1764, d. 8-14-1822. >From the Clarke Co. Cemeteries book now going to print - the Jackson Street Cemetery (the original city cemetery for Athens): Conger, Abijah 4 May 1782 - 4 Feb 1866 [This is a new Elberton granite headstone stone to replace the original one which was missing; set in 1964. It says he was born in NJ, died in Athens, GA, was a missionary to the Indians at Brainerd Station, Chattanooga, TN. His obituary in the 21 Feb 1866 issue of the Southern Watchman is headed "Another Old Citizen Gone!" He had been stricken with a paralysis the week before and died at his residence in Athens at age 84. He was a native of NJ and was sent in early life as a missionary to the Cherokee Indians at "Brainard". He joined the Presbyterian Church at age 22.] Conger, Phoebe Tappan 27 Mar 1781 - 1 Apr 1856, w/o Abijah Conger, "born in NJ, died in Athens, Ga." [This is a new Elberton granite stone replacing the missing original stone, set in 1964 by Dr. Hugh Hodgson, a descendant and noted UGA professor of music. Original marble footstone still there: "P.T.C." According to an article in the 27 Mar 1989 Athens Daily News, the original headstone for Phoebe was found and re-set here in concrete. The headstone had been turned face-down and used as a stepping stone!] I will let you know what I found out on the cemetery! TTYL, Eve -----Original Message----- From: David W.
