Decendants of Alfred Dockins of Rabun County, Georgia

Unless otherwise noted all locations are in Rabun County, Georgia.

First Generation

Alfred Dockins b 1800 in North Carolina

Notes

I don't yet know who the mother(s) of Alfred's children were.  Alfred was married at least twice.  Habersham County records have an Alfred Dockins married to Thena Starrett in 1828.  I no longer know if this Alfred Dockins is the right one.  See the
other Alfred Dockins below.  He married Nancy Cannon in 1850 according to Rabun County records.  "Sketches of Rabun County" by A. J. Ritchie says that Alfred and Nancy had no children.

Alfred bought lot 33, 250 acres, of the 5th district in Rabun County from Martin Kell on 23-Nov-1829.  He also bought lot 149 (40 acres) of the 13th district from James Watt Ellard on 27-Jan-1839.  According to the 1850 Rabun County Census, Alfred had acquired 300 acres of land.

Census information on Alfred is as follows.
1850 - 50 years old, farmer, born in NC, married to Nancy (Cannon).
1870 - 68 years old and farming for a living.

Notes

James Mitchell (Jim) Dockins, my grandfather, was a farmer when he moved from Rabun County, Georgia to Greenwood County, SC.  In 1920 he was living at 208 Jackson St., Greenwood SC and working in the Old Greenwood Cotton Mill cloth room.
Grandpa's first wife Bertha (Birdie) Lee McClain (7-Sept-1891) - (29-Feb-1924) died at 32 years old.

In 1936, Grandpa filled out an application for a social security number and provided the following information:  father:  Mitchell Dockins, mother: Matilda Pitts, birthplace: Rabun, Georgia.

Grandpa married Vernelle Caroline Moseley (6-May-1914) - (25-Apr-1962), my grandmother, on June 7, 1941.  I met him and spent an afternoon with him in 1965.  I remember him as the largest man I've ever seen in person.  He was so tall that his head touched the headliner in the car even when he slouched in the seat.  He was 75 years old.

Grandpa died in Greenwood County in the town of Greenwood at the Taylor Memorial Nursing Home on April 21, 1970.  He is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Greenwood, Greenwood County,  in an unmarked grave between his two wives.  Grandpa's death certificate has the following:  father:  Alfred Mitchell Dockins, mother:  Matilda Pitts.

This site is my way of connecting to my Dockins' ancestors and to their descendants.  This site contains the data that I've researched and believe to be true on FIVE generations spanning over 200 years.  I also have information on other limbs of the Dockins' tree that I can't yet attach.  Please e-mail me for details by clicking on the e-mail icon.
According to "A Dictionary of Surnames" by Patrick Hauks and Flavia Hodges, the Dockins surname originates from the surname Daw which is a pet form of David.  The surname Dawkins has the same origin.  I have found examples of known DOCKINS that had their name spelled as DAWKINS or DOCKENS.  It is possible that this was a mistake of the recorder of the documents and with the latter that is certainly possible, but with one exception I've found DAWKINS only on records dating before 1825.

This site is dedicated to my mother Mary Elizabeth Dockins.
Other Alfred Mitchell Dockins

Alfred Mitchell Dockins/Dawkins of Habersham County Georgia

This Alfred was born 23-April-1841.  According to the 1850 Habersham County census, his mother and father were John, born 1808 in SC, and Mary
DOCKINS.  I have his confederate pension records and know for a fact that there is no known connection between him and the Alfred from Rabun County.  Could this be a nephew of Alfred of Rabun County???  The chances of 2 men with the same name living this close together with no connection is astronomical.

There is also a John Dockins that served in the same confederate unit, Company E, 16th Georgia Infantry, as the Habersham Alfred.  I think that this was the Habersham Alfred's father because the confederate salt records have a Mary Dockins from Habersham County as a widow of a confederate soldier and as the mother of a confederate soldier.  Mary is the only woman who qualifies.

The 1880 Habersham census has an "A N" Dockins and a Virginia and Betty and Willie with the same birth years.  I think that this is the same pe Alfred Mitchell Dockins, because his mother Mary Dockins, 70 years old, is in the same house and her age matches the Mary Dockins on the 1850 Habersham County Census..
