Albemarle county, Virginia was created in 1744 from Goochland County. A few years later in 1761 the lines were re-drawn, including in Albemarle parts of Louisa county. At that time a more central location was selected for the county seat, resulting in the founding of Charlottesville. The county was named for William Anne Keppel, Earl of Albemarle, and govenor of the Virginia colony from 1837 to 1854, although he never actually came to Virginia. |

Albemarle county is also the site of Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States. There are tours of the home available hosted by the Thomas Jefferson Federation in Charlottesville. |
