NOTHERN IRELAND GUIDE TO EDUCATIONAL RECORDS

SCHOOL RECORDS: The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) has released a "Guide to Educational Records". It is unique in that it holds records deposited by government departments, local authorities, universities, many different types of schools and private individuals. This is a tool to gain quick and easy access to the catalogues on the shelf, from which one then orders the school record on the correct form.

Records relating to schools in Ireland date from the 17th century but these were Diocesan free or royal schools and the founding and administration of schools under the bequest of Erasmus Smith. The national schools were set up from the 1830s but several schools predate this by 50 years or more. The Southwell Charity School in Downpatrick was established in the 18th century as a ?blue coat? school (D.2961). The Lurgan Free School was established by Lord Lurgan in 1783, which educated children from Lurgan?s Brownlow Estate, regardless of religion (D.1928). Many of these (landed) estate schools became national schools in the 19th century.

These early records (pre 1830s) relate to endowed, charitable and private educational establishments. They show that the province of Ulster was far advanced with education for the masses in the decade before the national schools were introduced to Ireland. In 1826, county Antrim had 515 endowed or charitable schools with over 20,000 pupils. Of 1640 pay schools throughout Ireland in 1824, there were 1193 in Ulster with 125,272 pupils, with the other 447 schools having 31,912 pupils. Records exist for some of these schools and are detailed in this publication.

For example: c.1648-1920 Biographical notes relating to pupils if Dungannon Royal School, county Tyrone (T.1674).

      1. Records of Lurgan Free School, established for the education of poor children in Shankill parish including a minute book of the school.

National schools commenced in the 1830s and many existing schools became national schools. Records are very similar to Australia for the national schools. The most valuable records in PRONI are the registers which record details about the pupils on their entry to the school (SCH.1-1412). The entries include sufficient information ? name and date of birth or age on entry of each pupil, occupation and address of parents, religion, details of attendance and academic progress ? for the registers to be used as census substitutes in family history research. Previous schools attended are listed

Many of these schools have registers covering 100 years up to 1970. The good news is that when Northern Ireland schools became public elementary schools from 1922, many used the old registers so a continuous record is existant. There is a 30 year closure on these records so next year records up to 1969 should be available to researchers. Therefore the SCH. series of records relating to public elementary and primary schools in Northern Ireland also relates to these schools as pre-Partition national schools as well. Appendix I of this guide lists an alphabetical index of schools with the PRONI reference number for which PRONI holds records. Appendix II lists the Belfast schools for which records are held.

Private Education: Private education continued after the establishment of the national school system and some records for these schools have survived. One of the most important in Belfast, then and now, was the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and there are records of pupils? names back to 1810 (SCH.524). The sons of the merchant and commercial classes of Belfast were sent there and the school had excellent academic results. Another private school was the Belfast Academy.

There are also records for private schooling outside Belfast. Rev. Robert Park reported on the schools in the town of Ballymoney in 1824 mentioning no less than five private schools with a total of 258 pupils, of whom 154 were able to read (D.499). These schools were all founded between 1817 and 1823 and they had an annual income of between £5 and £60.

    1. Register of principals, teachers and pupils of Gracehill Academy (MIC.1F/3).

    1. Account books for a school run by Rev. C. J. McAlester, Minister of Holywood First Presbyterian Church. They contain names of pupils and details of fees paid for tuition, books, etc. (D.3686).

There are records relating to educationalists such as Vere Foster. Tertiary education is also well covered with the important archive of Magee Presbyterian Trust, c.1850-1984 (M.P.T.) relating to Magee Presbyterian College, Londonderry now known as Magee University College. Photographs of schools has not been neglected and a good collection is available in PRONI. For example in 1905-1908 photographs of pupils at Stoneyford School, county Antrim, with lists of their names.

Teachers unions, societies and associations all have records of minutes and papers deposited and indexed. Copy books, exercise books and programmes of work are deposited. Copy books were issued to train children?s handwriting. Many examples of children?s school books credited to their name and address as deposited, e.g. c1850-60 book keeping and mathematical exercise books of Anthony McKinley, Carnealty, county Antrim.

School buildings, their design, construction and maintenance are well documented in PRONI. School inspectors and their records are well documented. Printed reports of the head inspectors 1834-1920 often exceed 10,000 words in length providing detailed comment on every conceivable subject relating to schools. In Ireland they did not give notice of their visits and tried to come on schools by surprise. Inspectors often included criticisms in their reports (ED.10/1) and (ED.5). Inspectors? Observation books in the SCH., series, c.1860-c.1870. The reference SCH.145/5 is the class (SCH), the school (145 is the school reference number) and (/5) is the sub-classification for Inspectors? Observation Books. Thus the example SCH.145/5 relates to the Inspectors? Observation Books for Carrickmannon Public Elementary School, county Down.

Other school records come under the headings, Model Schools, Agricultural Schools and Colleges, Reformatory and Industrial Schools, Nursery Schools, Government Policy on Education, Local Government Policy, Statistics on Education and Miscellaneous Records on Education.

I recommend family history societies with members researching in Ireland and especially in the Province of Ulster purchase a copy of this book (approx. £7.50), a detailed guide to school registers available. Write to PRONI, 66 Balmoral Avenue, BELFAST BT9 6NY or E-mail them to find the current price and postage. There is a book list on their web site: http://proni.nics.gov.uk/index.htm

I?ll list some of the schools which give the school name, county and the school reference number.
