SURRENDER AT VICKSBURG MISS JULY 3-4, 1863

July 3, 1863 (Friday) Morning in Vicksburg saw white flags of truce appear on the defenses of the city. Gen. Pemberton had finally bowed to a superior force and six weeks of seige after nearly a year of Union operations against him. The two Generals, Grant and Pemberton, met under an oak tree to discuss the terms of surrender which would take place on the forth of July. July 4, 1863 (Saturday) Today about 29,500 Confederates under Gen.John Pemberton surrendered to Gen. Grant at Vicksburg, laying down their arms and marching out of the battered city. Grant watched the flag-raising at the Court House as on the riverfront the boats shrilled their whistles. The Mississippi River was now open save for Port Hudson, which would not hold out much longer. The prisioners were retained in their old organizational formations and the business or paroling them got under way as rapidly as possible.
