The Atwood Family

THE ATWOOD FAMILY

Information and Links

According to the Atwoods who have been working on genealogy many years before me, the name Atwood started with the spelling "Atte Wode" This name has also been spelled Attewode, Atte Wood and Attwood, with Attwood being used until the 1800's. Some members of the family dropped the Atte off the front and took the name of Wood.
The first Atwood on record was William Attewode, in England, in 1203. The name was said to be drived from the family living in or near a woods, thicket or grove of trees.
Sanderstead Manor, in Surry County, England, was the home of the Atwood family since 1346 and remained in the family until the last part of the 1700's. It was a large building, with many rooms. It had it own church, and about 14 small famrs. It originally was made up of 3,000 acres. It was located just south of Surry County.
The larget concentration of Atwoods, in England, was in Surry and Kent Counties, just south of London.
