Researching Strong(e)s and Strang(e)s in Britain and Ireland

The extracts from the births and deaths indexes list 'Strong' birth and death registrations from 1st January 1864 to 31st December 1958 for that part of the island of Ireland which currently constitutes the Republic of Ireland and from 1st January 1864 to 1922 for Northern Ireland. The compulsory registration of births and deaths commenced on 1st January 1864.

For a wide variety of reasons not all births, deaths and marriages were registered, and this is especially true during the earlier years following the introduction of this requirement.

All the extracts from the indexes refer only to registrations of persons having the name surname 'Strong'. They do not include any derivatives of this surname or variations in its spelling (e.g.,'Stronge', 'Strang' etc.).

In the event of non-familiarity with the issue of civil registration of births, marriages and deaths in Ireland it is strongly recommended that Catherine Blumsom's booklet 'Civil Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages: A Practical Approach' is studied in detail before making use of these extracts. The above publication is published by the Ulster Historical Foundation and is essential reading in order to understand the Irish Registration system. Copies of Catherine Blumsom's book can be obtained from the Ulster Historical Foundation for a small charge of about around £3 each. At an exchange rate of approximately US$1.6 to £1 that comes to the small sum of US$5 (rounded up) and the postage would not be expensive as it only weighs a few ounces.

Catherine Blomsom's book includes a map on page 3 which shows the location of all the Civil Registration Districts in Ireland. Copies of the map are reproduced here and are referred to in the present extracts from the Indexes to the Irish registers of births, deaths and marriages.

CAUTIONARY WARNING REGARDING THE EXTRACTS While every possible care was taken during the enormous task of transcribing these extracts from the indexes to the Irish births, marriages and deaths registers it is possible that some errors may exist in the transcribed material as the work was frequently undertaken in difficult and demanding circumstances and some of the records consulted bordered on the illegible.

Access to a particular index was frequently time limited due to the large numbers of persons wishing to consult it and the search room was almost always crowded and noisy - all factors which greatly increased the risk of transcription errors. Very occasionally two identical entries appeared consecutively in an index. All such entries are included in these extracts from the indexes. No attempt has been made to interpret or edit such entries, although it is possible that some at least may have resulted from duplicate registrations.

The use of these transcriptions from the indexes to the Irish births, marriages and deaths registers for any purpose whatsoever is done at the users own risk and no responsibility whatsoever is accepted for any mistakes, errors or omissions which they may contain.
