The descendancy commences with an "Unknown (Arm?)Strong. This fictive person was created to support discussion of the possibility these Strongs are descended from a progenitor member of the notorious Armstrong Clan of Border fame. See Scottish and Border Research. However, it is entirely possible, indeed more likely, the actual progenitor(s) of this lineage were members of the Strang family of Lanarkshire or elsewhere in Lowland Scotland; or alternatively, were from elsewhere in England.
The next record, Edward Strang(e)/Strong, gives fictive dates to set him in the proper time frame. He is based upon C.Roy Huddleston, "Cumberland Families & Heraldry"(1978), p.328-9: Edward Strong was "admitted to the customary tenement of Rattenrow, nr. Durdar, c.1600... the property was farmed by succeeding generations...and, in 1937 the property was owned by James Rowland Strong, of Yew Tree, Thursby. Present head of family in 1978 was solicitor Peter Strong", of Carlisle, Cumberlandshire. Per information provided by Marie V. Strong, it appears that this part of the descendency proceeds from Edward's son John Strong|Strangge of Rattenrow.
The first record from the IGI is that of James Strangge. Birth and death dates are again fictive; however, there is a marriage record in the IGI, showimg him as marrying Elizabeth Page on 20 Jun 1613 at St. Andrews, Penrith.. James Strangge is hypothesized to be a migrant to Ulster, and progenitor of the Tynan Abbey Stronges and their Cumbrian offshoot lineage descending from John Strong of Armagh and Carlisle.
Early records being "spotty", Randall Strange and Symond Strang are found only as the next oldest records in IGI and as fathers of certain children. Note particularly the use of the "a" vice an "o" in spelling of the surname.... this would be quite consistent with the occurance of the name "Strang" in nearby Scotland. Much of the rest of the descendency is based on imputing relationship of Randall and Symond to early named Strongs. Other descendencies at later dates are based on IGI relationships. Again, however, it was necessary to impute relationships in many instances, and there is NO DIRECT PROOF at this time that most of these relationships exist. It should be emphasized as well that not all of the IGI data has been included in this database. Work remains to be accomplished.
The following guidelines were used in imputing relationships:
1) All surnames spelled "Strang", "Strangg", "Strange", Strangge", "Strong", "Stronge", etc., are assumed to be variant spellings.
2) The IGI records were exhaustively screened for, first, children born to an identifiable couple of parents; for example:
Thomas Strangg (various spellings) and wife Mary, parents of:
Anne Strange, b. 2 Feb. 1668 in St. Mary's Parish, Carlisle
Thomas Strong, b. March 1670 in St. Mary's Parish, Carlise
Frances Strongg, b. 15 Dec. 1678 in St. Mary's Parish, Carlise
Second, the IGI records were then screened for any marriage between Thomas Strangg and a Mary, in this case found to be Mary
Jackson.
3) It was assumed that individuals tended to stay in the same parish; therefore priority was given to matching Thomas Strong,
b. March, 1678 with parents named Thomas and Mary in St. Marys, rather than similarily named parents in another parish. If
desirable or necessary, second priority was given to matches in immediately adjoining parishes where known, or sometimes in
the parish of the bride if it could be shown that subsequent children were christened by appropriately named parents.
4) The birth dates are really baptismal records, based on the date christening took place in the local parish of the parents.
5) The IGI data did not include death dates. Due to the fact the Family History System program produced ages based
on entry of a birth date, artificial death dates were introduced in order to avoid absurd ages such as 323 years, etc. As
it developed, approximating ages became a useful analysis tool in evaluating matches between parents and children.
6) Often a child was found to have been christened by two parents in a certain year. Subsequently, the same parents would be
found christening a second and even a third child with the same name in following years. In these cases it was assumed the first
child had died and was being "replaced" with the subsequent child. Therefore, a fictive death date was introduced for the first
child, which would be before the birth of the second child with the same name, but after the birth of another, differently named child
of the same sex.
7) Where data external to the IGI could be found, as in Huddleston, etc., it was used to verify, correct, and/or amplify the
imputations from analysis of the IGI.
8) In the end, there remains sheer speculation for some of the matches; which will have to be revised as new data develops in the
future.
9) The superscripted numbers appearing after each individual's "given" name represent the generation
to which that individual belongs.
10) The numbers appearing in Parentheses ( ) following each surname represent record numbers for the respective individuals as
entered in the genealogy programs used. Anyone making inquires or comments regarding any of the individuals listed herein are
asked to make reference to the particular record identification numbers.

Considerable additional information concerning the relationships descending from Edward Strang(e)¦Strong has been provided by Marie Victorine Berlemont Strong, who spent considerable time prior to 1992 researching the Strong families of Cumbria. The information she has provided was "gleaned from original Bishops' Transcripts, baptismal and burial records, and records of memorial stones in different parishes in Cumberland (the latter very useful in establishing relationships)".
Tthe lineage descending from Edward Strangge through his son John Strangge and grandson John Strong appears to be rather more certain than the lineages assumed to descend through son James, as presented here... in the early years broad assumptions have had to be made in order to accomodate the need to present a unified picture of the lines of descent.
His presumed son, James Strangge, appears in the IGI... and for the sake of convenience in presenting the data, an ASSUMED relationship has been imputed between James Strangg and the lineage descending to and from John Strong of Armagh & Carlise... it is based somewhat on certain records known to exist in Ireland, but is independent of any actual proof there is a relationship of any kind. The greatest caution should be used with regard to this imputed relationship, as it may prove to be entirely erroneous!
Edward's hypothetical relationship with presumed younger sons Randall and Symond shown here are entirely assumed at this point, and are made for convenience to accomodate presentation of information concerning their assumed descendencies. Randall and Symond appear only as two of the oldest records in IGI and as fathers of certain children. Much of the rest of the descendency is based on imputing relationship of Randall and Symond to early named Strongs. Other links in the descendencies at later dates are based upon relationships which can at least be traced in the IGI. Again, the greatest caution should be used with regard to these imputed relationships.
1. John3 Strangg(e)¦Strong (812), of Rattenrow.1 1) He was also known as John Strangge. He was born circa 1594.
Based upon certain facts below, it is hypothesized that this John Strangge went to Ireland about 1613 with his brother, James Strangge, and participated in settling in the Plantation in Ulster, before ultimately returning to Cumbria circa 1640.
1) A Jn. Strong was summoned on 16 March 1624 to Court Assizes, in County Tyrone, Ireland. See Irish Strong Data Base Record #1043: from LDS Microfilm #1279356-26,Co. Tyrone Assizes, 1615-1636, Summonister's Roll #11, 19 March (1623/1624); 21 James I, reflecting that on 16 March 1624, a certain Jn. Strong of the Townland of Castlederg, Parish of Derg, Diocese of Derry, Co. Tyrone responded to a Summons issued by the court.
Normally one would assume that "Jn" refers to the given names John or Jonathan, and probably they do... However, remember that this entire line of reasoning is hypothetical. There are certain possibilities here... one that "Jn" actually is a misinterpretation of an ancromyn for "James", or otherwise that "Jn" was James' son or brother John or another brother Jonathon (the name Jonathon shows up fairly frequently in the Cumberland Strongs). It is safe to say there were Strong's at Castlederg, County Tyrone in 1624... in the Laggan Valley, near Lifford. It is also possible this "Jn. Strong" was the father of Mathew Stronge of Strabane, the progenitor of the Tynan Abbey Stronges. It appears more likely, however, that he was an uncle of Matthew Stronge of Strabane.
2) John Strong was a witness to a lease, on 10 April 1637 at Londonderry, Ireland. On 10 April 1637, in County Londonderry, per a record found in the Prior-Wendsforde Papers, held in the National Library, Dublin, Ireland, as MSH# 178 1847-1853(?); John Strong witnessed a lease from Thomas Ridgeway to Nicholas Comerford. See Irish Strong Data Base Record #513.
Hypothetically, it seems that if John Strong were the elder of the two sons, he would have returned to Cumberland sometime between 1637 and 1642, probably to assume the family's holdings there, occasioned by the death of his father. It should also be remembered that this was a time of growing turmoil in England and Scotland, not to mention Ireland, marked by the "Bishop's Wars", occasioned by the ill advised attempts of King Charles I and his Archbishop, Laud, to impose episcopacy on the presbyterian Scots. The Scots formed an army which struck south into England, forcing Charles I to equivocate and give in to the Scots... all of which undoubtedly impacted the Strongs of Cumbria.... as Carlisle was often in the direct line of march south.

b) John (?)4 Strong (7). Parentage is based upon information researched by Marie V. Strong, of Kent, England, prior to 1992. He was born circa 1636. He married Jane Barker (8) on 27 November 1656 at Dalston, Cumberland. He died in 1669 at Cumberland. He left a will in 1669.
(1) Ester5 Strong (867) was born circa 1663. She married William Henderson (868) on 19 June 1686 at Aikton, Cumberland, England.
(2) John5 Strong (863) was born circa 1665. He married Winifred Henderson of Moorhouse (864) on 16 November 1683. He left a will in 1725. He died in 1725 at Yeoman.
(a) John6 Strong (64) married Elizabeth Brigg of Cumdivock (69) on 14 August 1715 at Dalston. He was born on 27 November 1684 at St.Cuthbert, Carlisle. He left a will in 1753. He died in January 1753 at age 68. He was buried on 8 January 1753. His estate was probated in 1779.
i) Nathaniel7 Strang (75) was born on 19 April 1730 at Dalston. He died ??? 1800A.
ii) Sarah7 Strang (74) was born on 2 August 1725 at Dalston. She married J. Harrison (855) circa 26 May 1750. She died circa 1775.
iii) Mary7 Strang (70) was born on 22 January 1717 at Dalston. She married Christopher Wannop (708) on 17 May 1743 at St.Cuthbert's, Carlisle. She died circa 1775.
iv) John7 Strang (71). Query whether this is the John Strong of Rattenraw who left to his nephew Christopher Wonnop younger of Newby his watch and violin and his German flute to another nephew John eldest son of Samuel Strong? If so, he was survived by an only daughter, Sarah. See p.328, Huddleston, Cumberland Families and Heraldry. He was a yeoman (farmer). He was born on 9 November 1718 at Dalston. He married Ann Wilson of Greystoke (104) on 12 January 1755 at St.Cuthbert, Carlisle. He died in 1765. He was buried on 30 August 1765.
(a) Sarah8 Strang (707) was born on 26 July 1757. She was buried on 15 January 1766.
(b) John8 Strong (105). Gravestone Inscription from Vicar James Wilson book published in Dalston, 1890 for St.Michael's parish, Dalston: "A tender parent rests... also his son John who died Novr.3rd,1838 aged 27 yrs; also Robert, son of John,jr, who died May 22nd,1838, aged 18 mos", Headstone NO.149. He was born on 12 January 1761 at St.Cuthbert, Carlisle. He married Elizabeth Forester (Foster) (106) on 22 July 1809 at Wetheral. He died on 21 December 1815 at Pow Bank, Cumberland, at age 54.

2. James3 Strangge (1), supposed emigrant to Ulster, and progenitor of Stronge of Tynan Abbey, County Armangh.
He was born circa 1595 at Penrith, Cumberland? He married Elizabeth Page (2) on 20 June 1613 at St.Andrews, Penrith. (Marriage found in 1988 IGI). Hewas apparently mustered on 22 August 1642 at Raphoe, Donegal, Ireland. He died circa 1650.
Query whether James Strangg may have migrated to Ulster with his brother, John Strangge,during the plantation circa 1613, and remained there, being the James Strange of the Old Scots Army mustered at Raphoe in 1642, and whether he might have been the original progenitor of the "Tynan Abbey" branch of the Stronge lineages. There are several points which may support this hypothesis:
1) Placement in the time period: Speculatively, he is suspected of having been born about 1590-1595... since he shows up in the IGI as marrying Elizabeth Page on 20 Jun 1613 at St. Andrews, Penrith. He would have been about 18 to 23 years of age then. The Plantation of Ulster was just then underway. Perhaps significantly, there are no further records of James Strong and Elizabeth Page to be identified in Cumberland, at least insofar as the 1988 IGI is concerned. It is easy to assume that James and Elizabeth went to Ulster as part of the Plantation... where they lived and raised a family.
2) See Irish Strong Data Base Record #1043, from LDS Microfilm #1279356-26,Co. Tyrone Assizes, 1615-1636, Summonister's Roll #11, 19 March (1623/1624); 21 James I, reflecting that on 16 March 1624, a certain Jn. Strong of the Townland of Castlederg, Parish of Derg, Diocese of Derry, Co. Tyrone responded to a Summons issued by the court.
Normally one would assume that "Jn" refers to the given names John or Jonathan, and perhaps they do... remember that this entire line of reasoning is hypothetical. However, there are certain possibilities here... one that "Jn" actually is a misinterpretation of an ancromyn for "James", or otherwise that "Jn" was James' son or brother John or another brother Jonathon (the name Jonathon shows up fairly frequently in the Cumberland Strongs). It is safe to say there were Strong's at Castlederg, County Tyrone in 1624... in the Laggan Valley, near Lifford. It is POSSIBLE this "Jn. Strong" was the father of Mathew Strong of Strabane, the progenitor of the Tynan Abbey Stronges; however, it seems more likely that John was James' brother, that they both came over to Ireland during the Plantation scheme, that James stayed in Ireland, and was the father of Matthew.
3) on 10 April 1637, in County Londonderry, per a record found in MSH 178 1847-1853?; John Strong witnessed a lease from Thomas Ridgeway to Nicholas Comerford. See Irish Strong Data Base Record #513.
4) Hypothetically, it seems that if John Strong were the elder of the two sons, he would have returned to Cumberland sometime between 1637 and 1642, probably to assume the families holdings there, occasioned by the death of his father.
5) See Irish Strong Data Base Record #372: From LDS microfilm roll #897012-3, being a transcription made by D. Steward in 1911 of an original handwritten record found at the PRO London, England, including at p.179; "Muster Raphoe, Co. of Donegall of Capt. William.Hamilton's Company of Foote as part of the Regiment of Sir Robert Stewart, Knight: including "James Strange".
The 1642 Rising was the occasion for the Muster of the Old Scots Army at Raphoe, County Donegal, in the Laggan Valley... the settlers being rallied in self-defense against the attacks being made upon them by the rising gaelic Irish. The James Strange found in the Muster Rolls of the Old Scots Army might easily have been any age, even 47-52, as he would have been if he was indeed the James Strangg originally born in Cumberland circa 1590-95.

1) From information gleaned from "'Burke's Peerages" and from 'Armagh Clergy and
Parishes', by Rev. James B. Leslie, (LDS film #897012 part 2), it is known that
Matthew Strong of Strabane obtained a lease from the Corporation of Goldsmiths,
one of the City of London Companies which participated in King James I's
Plantation scheme by contributing funds in exchange for lands in the "old" Irish
county of Coleraine and the Barony of Loughinsholin (formerly part of Tyrone),
centered on the new city of Londonderry in the new county of "Londonderry".
This lease was obtained circa 1654. See Irish Strong Data Base Record #1491.
2) The IGI shows that on 29 January 1654 Matthew Strong and his wife Anne were the parents of a son, Edward Strong, christened in Derry Cathedral in the Parish of Templemore; See Irish Strong Data Base Records #64, 1488, and 1496, and subsquently,
3) on 14 May 1657 they were the parents of a son, James Strong, christened in Derry Cathedral in the Parish of Templemore. See Irish Strong Data Base Records #90, 1494, and 1497.
4) In 1665, a "Nathan" Strong appears in the Subsidy Roll for Co. Tyrone, in the Parish of Camusjuxta Bann... also referred to as "Camus", and apparently meaning "Camus across the River Bann". See LDS microfilm part #1279356-17.
Separate LDS microfilm part #1279356-20 concerns a record held at Armagh County Museum; this part of the microfilm contains what at first glance appear to be duplicate ccs of the 1665 Co. Tyrone Subsidy Rolls but on examination they appear to be for the subsequent years, 1666 and 1668. Here the names appear as "Hathon" and "Mathew" It seems likely these were all records of the same person, Matthew Stronge. The confusion in his given name arises from difficulty in deciphering the hand written Subsidy Rolls, (See Irish Strong Data Base Records #1044, 1045, 2070) but it seems likely this was the same Matthew Stronge of Strabane, who is the progenitor of the Stronges of Tynan Abbey. Hypothetically, it would be logical for Matthew Stronge's great-grandsons Matthew and John to look to certain family interests back in Cumbria, perhaps at the behest of their "great uncle John, older brother of their great-grandfather, James", or with the benefit of influence provided by John. This may have been what took the younger Matthew Stronge to Liverpool and set him up to become the Mayor of Liverpool, and led the younger John Strong to Carlisle, where he fathered a part of the Strong of Carlisle lineage.
For purposes of providing continuity of lineage, however speculative, the direct line from Matthew Stronge of Strabane to John Strong of Armagh & Carlisle, while appearing in the Stronge of Tynan Abbey, County Armagh, Ireland, HTML SPECULATIVE Descendency Chart, is duplicated here, commencing with Matthew's second son, Captain James Stronge.

Per email and letter from Paul Arnold, John Strong came over from Ireland to Cumberland. He possibly was a son of Rev. John Stronge of Tynan Abbey. He married in Cumberland, and is known to have had one child. He is buried in the churchyard of the Cathedral in Carlisle (St. Cuthberts?). Per document received 6 April 2001:
"John Strong, b. 1720 at Armagh, Ireland, came over settled in Cumberland, d. at Carlisle 27th March 1783, buried in the churchyard of "the Cathedral". Though his parentage is unknown, one possibility is that he was the 3rd son of Reverend John Stronge of Tynan Abbey, Co. Armagh (Burke's Peerage). A question looms largely with regard to the foregoing, namely, assuming for discussion that they were both indeed the sons of Rev. John Stronge, WHY did Matthew and John Stronge, of Tynan Abbey cross from Ireland to Cumberland and Lancashire? Was there a pre-existing tie with the various Strong families of the area as hypothecated above? Further research and investigation of this hypothesis may provide evidence confirming the link between the Tynan Abbey family and the Strongs of Carlisle which has previously been undetected.

Humbly Herewith:
That Memorialist entered the Army in the year 1811, by the recommendation of his late Royal Highness the Duke of Kent, and served in the 44th Regiment in Portugal and Spain - in Holland under Sir Thomas Graham and at Waterloo, and has been twice wounded, first at the assault on Bergen op Soom and in the second instance at Waterloo, on both which occasions he commanded a company and from his first entrance into the Army he continued uninterrruptedly on Service, until he was placed upon half pay by reduction in 1817.
Memorialist has lost two brothers on Service in the army, one a Captain and the other a Lieutenant and has another a Post Captain in the Navy, who was severely wounded, at present commanding the Balnedera, Frigate.
Memorialist has a wife and seven children in consequence of which he has been induced to lay the above mentioned circumstances before you and now begs leave to express a most earnest hope that his case may meet with an indulgent consideration and that you will be pleased to confer upon him an appointment as Barrack Master in any part of the United Kingdom."
It is not known whether he ever received the position that he was requesting. Note, however, that he ultimately died in Bruges, Belgium, where he had apparently been living for some time, as his children were all apparently born and christened there.
Per statement of "Aunt Lucie" addressed to Charles Edward Wilton Gray Strong: William Strong and Margaret Gray.... had several children, one of whom, Edward Gray Strong, was our grandfather. He was born on 2 August 1785 at St.Cuthbert, Carlisle. He married Margaret Winter Gray (776), daughter of Edward Gray Esq. (777) and (--?--) Winter of Alston, Cumbria (778), on 28 October 1818 at St. John's, Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland, England. He died on 19 October 1846 at Bruges, Belgium, at age 61.2
