Subject: [STRONG] DNA STUDY

Hi Everyone,

About a year ago I found my husband's great great grandfather, Clifton L

Strong, in Campbell County, Virginia. With that knowledge I searched the

census records for other Strongs in Campbell County  and this is what I

found.

1840 Census:   Thomas Strong

1850 Census:    Thomas comes alive with the following family

Thomas Strong  57 M  Farmer           Virginia

                          Peggy               56 F

  Virginia

                          Elvira                22 F

    Virginia

                          Lally                 21  F

      Virginia

                          Ailsey               17 F

     Virginia

                          Catherine         13 F

 Virginia

                          Austin               14 M

    Virginia

1860 Census:

                           Thomas Strong   67 M  Constable

                           Margaret            66 F

                           Ailsey                 25 F

                           Austin                 23 M  Laborer

1870 Census:

                            Strong, Margaret  76 F W  Keeping Home

1860 Census:     William Strong  40 M     Laborer         Virginia

                          S Ann               48 F

    Virginia

                          Lucy Perdue     16 F

 Virginia

                          Wm A Ellit          7 M B

  Virginia

1870 Census:      Strong, William  50 M W   Farmer

                           Susan A            60 F  W    Keeping Home

1850 Census:      Clifton L Strong  28 M        Farmer         Virginia

                           Martha A           26 F

       Virginia

                           Oden C                5 M

        Virginia

                           Zacheriah L          4 M

        Virginia

1870 Census:      Strong, Clay       25 M W    Works on Farm

                           (Oden C)

Thomas Strong is 57 in 1850   born 1793 or 1792

William Strong is  30 in 1850   born 1820 or 1819

Clifton L Strong is 28 in 1850  born  1822 or 1821

I wonder if this could be a father and  his two sons.

Through the DNA study there was a match  showing that the late Robert T

Strong, Jr and my husband, Robert M Strong, had a common ancestor. I

went back through some of  Robert T Strong's writings and in an e-mail

dated September 5, 1998  he mentions a " 04.  John Strong followed his

brother,  05. William Strong to Georgia, after spending a few years in

Campbell County, Virginia beginning late 1780s".

Then in an e-mail dated September 7, 1998 he mentions a "William Strong

of Hanover  and Campbell  Counties, VA died before pensions were

authorized".

Obviously, I am trying to find the connection to Robert T Strong, Jr's

ancestors. I would appreciate any help that anyone can provide.

Sincerely, Sharon Lafferty Strong

After looking up information on the Strong family, this is what I have:

My husband, [the participant in Kit #6809] was born in MD in 1930

His father, Woodrow F Strong,  was born in Floyd County, VA in 1910  (original name was Robert, he changed it to Woodrow)

His father, Robert F Strong, was born in 1888 in Floyd County, VA

His father, O C Strong, (Clay Strong) was born in Campbell County, VA
I say Campbell County because on the 1850 census it shows an Oden C who is five years old living with his family.

His father, Clifton L Strong, was born in VA
On the 1850 census it shows Clifton L Strong age 28 living with his wife, Martha and their two sons, Oden C age 5  and Zacheriah L age 4. The county is Campbell and the town/township is Lefsville.

Also, in 1850 in Campbell County and the town/township of Letsville there is a Thomas Strong age 57 living with his family. I wonder if there is a relationship between the two. The ages would be right for father and son. Just guessing. Both of  their occupations were "farmer".

The 1870 census for Campbell County shows a Clay Strong.

The proof that Clay is Oden C is on the 1900 census for Floyd County, VA  showing an Oden F born in 1891 to Clay and Mary Strong. Clay died September 7 1891 of a stroke.

When I first went on the Strong Subscriber List Robert T Strong was a moderator. He was wonderful. I think in his genealogy his family was very briefly in Campbell County, VA before moving out of Virginia. After he died and when my husband had his DNA tested, I was informed that there were common markers with his family. I don't know whose DNA was tested, his or his son's.

In 1860 Thomas is 67 and he and his family live in the Western District of Campbell County, He is now a constable.

On the 1860 census for the Western District in Campbell County William Strong is a laborer age 40

On the 1870 census William Strong is 50 years old and a farmer. The town/township is The Western District and the P.O. is Lynchburg.

I hope this helps. Please keep in touch and let me know what you make of all this,

Sharon Strong

Editor’s Note:   In April, 2011, Kit #134073 surnamed ‘Dickerson’, joined the Strong Y-DNA Project, with a match of 35 out of 37 markers.  On inquiry, the following message was received from the researcher, Linda Reneau:

Dear Dave.

….

I have been working on my genealogy for several years, and have everything proven thru My ggggrandfather.  He was Leonard Dickerson, Sr.  he was born approx. 1766.  He married Marjoy Rentfro in June, 1787.  In Montgomery Co., Va.  He apparently was raised by Griffith Dickerson, but we do not match any DNA testing for that family.  I know that there were Strongs living in Montgomery and Floyd Counties, Va. because my Dad used to talk about a family by that name, that lived across the road when he was a boy.     Could it be that Leonard, Sr. could have been adopted, and is a Strong?

Any help you can give us would be wonderful, as I am at wit's end trying

to find out who His parents were.

Thanks so much,  Linda Dickerson Reneau

On review of the above letter and the information previously received from Sharon Strong, it appeared there were some points of possible contact between the Dickenson and Strong families in Floyd County, Virgina.    Accordingly, I suggested to both Linda Reneau and Sharon Strong that they upgrade their participant testing to 37 markers, and also have them SNP tested.    We know from SNP testing of Kit #5834 that the “Southern” Strongs are in Haplogroup R1b1a2a1a1b3 .

As a result, an order to upgrade Kit #6809 from 25 to 37 markers was entered with FTDNA, as well as an order for “Deep Clade SNP” testing.    Unfortunately, it subsequently developed that there was insufficient Y-DNA material remaining from the original sample submitted to FTDNA by the participant.  We were unable to obtain results for the 26-37 STR Panel of markers, although we have learned enough about his SNP results to know that he is now classed as being in Haplogroup  R1b1a2a1a1b;  we are lacking only results for SNP U152 to know whether he is an exact match for Kit #5834 in Haplogroup R1b1a2a1a1b3.    Participant #6809 having died, it was decided to test one of his sons, who is now the participant in Kit #213219.

Now, it appears the Dickerson kit, #134073, matches the Southern Strong STR Haplotype with exceptions at DYS439 [11 vice 12], and DYS389-2 [30 vice 29].   The results in Kit’s #6809 and #213219 match each other on the first 25 markers, with a DYS390 mutation from 24 to 25 occuring in just these two kits in the Southern Strong group.   Kit #213219 matches the Southern Strong STR Haplotype on markers 26 through 37.   We may infer that if we had results from Kit #6809 for the later panel, they would also match the Southern Strong STR Haplotype.    What is rather interesting is that kits #6809, 213219, and 134073 each have the DYS389-2=30 result.

One hypothesis is that the progenitor ancestor of all the Southern Strong kits and the Dickenson kit may have shared DYS389-2=29, with a mutation to 30 occuring at some point prior to the DYS439 mutation from 12 to 11 in the case of the Dickenson kit #134073, and the DYS390 mutation from 24 to 25 in the case of the father/son kits #6809 and #213219 occuring after the speculated non-parental event involving the Dickenson lineage.

At the present date, 28 July 2012, I suggest the researchers in Kits #213219 and 134073 order SNP U152.   This can be done by clicking on the HaploTree page tab in the respective FTDNA Participant Kits, and specifically ordering U152 at a price of $29.00 following the order procedure set out on that page.   A positive result from this test will close the loop tying the three kits to the Southern Strong group from a DNA perspective.   It will then remain for the respective researchers to explore the documentary evidence for a possible non-parental event tying the lineages together.
