Russell Strong and I have been
working on this for some time. Earlier this year, Russell made a
discovery that has given us some new leads that we have been following.
The following research paper may help us understand this connection a little
better. Now it is your turn to poke holes in it.
For many years, it has seemed likely that the connection to Samuel Strong's
ancestors would lead through
Goals of Search:
1.. To determine if the John Strong entry at
Family Search is the father of Samuel Strong the father of William Adelbert Strong and our Strong Family. (Known as the
2.. To prove marriage of this John Strong to Gertrud
Kaercher of
3.. Determine if the John Strong living in Bald Eagle
Township, Centre County in 1810 is the same John Strong as the one in Family
Search
4.. Determine if either of these are the son of James "Schrim" Strong of
5.. Determine where they lived

FamilySearch: Message posted by Russ Strong on
the JFStrong list. January 21, 2008:
“Hello Strong
Descendants,
I was trying to find out more on our Samuel STRONG and I think I may have found
a couple of IGI records for him 2 Male Birth entries for 16 Jul 1789 in Chanceford Twp., York, Pennsylvania each listing parents as
John Strong and Grete Kercher
1 Male Christening on 27 Oct 1789 in Chanceford Twp.,
York, Pennsylvania with same parents and the one I already had Male birth about
1791 of Berks, Pennsylvania married to Sarah Strunk, abt 1816
The first 3 are the important ones as they give the possible parentage and an
earlier birth date than we assumed but within 2 years of our dates.
The first entry does not have any dates on the father and mother, however the
2nd and 3rd entry has a birth date for John Strong of about 1757 of Chanceford Twp., York, Pennsylvania and the birth date for
Grete Kercher of about 1761 of Chanceford
Twp., York, Pennsylvania
I think this is almost the key to linking our Samuel to John Strong, the son
of, the immigrant ancestor, James Strong, AKA Schim Strang of York County, Pennsylvania!! The only discrepancy
is about a 5-8 year window as John's birth date is listed as between Nov 1763
and Apr 1765 with a baptism date of 25 Apr 1765
I have attached the webpage that I found at Family Search.org. If the page
doesn't come through then just go there and enter the criteria of Samuel Strong
and Pennsylvania
Your cousin,
Russell Strong”

posting this information about their DNA study. As I suspected the
DNA research they are doing is in the male line only and to implement a female
line study would necessitate our finding two female descendants of Gertrud Kaercher who descend through two different daughters of
hers or two lines from the mother. This would be impractical for us to
attempt at this time.

3. I could not find any further information on Gertraut except the reference Russell found linking her to
John Strong. I am taking a big leap of faith here and wondering if she
died fairly young, possibly when Samuel was born. I have found in the
past when a line is difficult to follow and multiple children are not found, this is often the case.
4. Connection to John Strong of Bald Eagle township,
The following is the chronology of
1772
1789
1798 Centre Township was formed from Bald Eagle Township
1811 Centre County was formed from Mifflin, the name Upper Bald Eagle
Township was restored.
1839 -
John Strong was enumerated in Bald Eagle township,

I wondered if it was possible to link John Strong to another family in

Son Christian married there in 1811.
Several of his children lived in
There is also a link to Martin Kaercher's old friend
Peter deLangh. A number of descendants of Peter
are living next to John Strong in 1810. There are some inter-marriages
with this family. I have not found one as close as that of the Emenheisers but there may be one there.
From all of this we can presume:
John Strong, son of James [Strong] and Mary Magdalena Emenheiser, married Gertraud Kaercher, a daughter of Johan Martin Kaercher of
They had son Samuel b. 1789 (baptism recorded at Chanceford,

UPDATE at 13 November 2009: The Y-DNA test results for Kit #164627tend to validate the research reported above by Karen Strong McKellar and Russell Strong. The participant in Kit #164627matches the results in Kits #17527 & #17528, as well as those in Kits #6680, #16001 & 23314. All of the participants appear to be descended from three different grandsons of James [Schim] Strang, eg., Samuel Strong [son of John Strong and Grete Kercher]; Michael Strong [son of James Strong, Jr. and Maria Catherine Hauer]; and Jacob Strong, [son of James Strong, Jr. and Maria Catherine Hauer].
