DNA Study Note #21:

Created March 12, 2008;

Previously Updated to October 13, 2009;

Updated to November 13, 2009:

This DNA Note sets out certain research conducted by Karen McKellar and Russell Strong, which tends to show that the Mifflin County Pennsylvania Strongs descended from Samuel Strong are indeed related to the York County Pennsylvania Strongs descended from James “Schim” Strong or Strang.    This note may be considered as a discussion of the hypothesis previously set out at the end of DNA Note #14. See also the pedigree charts for kits #17527 & #17528, and #164627, and for #6680, #16001 & 23314.  DNA Results may be reviewed at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegalstrongs/dnaresults.htm .  It will be observed that there is a Y-DNA Match between the participants listed.

Subject: [STRONG] Mifflin County Strong-York County Strong Connection

Introduction:

Several times earlier on this list descendants of Samuel Strong of Mifflin County, PA have posted here concerning research being conducted to establish a relationship to him from James "Schrim" Strong of York county as the DNA study suggests there may be a direct link to this family [See DNA Note #14].

Russell Strong and I have been working on this for some time.  Earlier this year, Russell made a discovery that has given us some new leads that we have been following.  The following research paper may help us understand this connection a little better.  Now it is your turn to poke holes in it.

For many years, it has seemed likely that the connection to Samuel Strong's ancestors would lead through Berks County but we had been unable to find anything there.  It also suggested that he probably was related to the two Strongs who were enumerated in Centre County in 1810 since after his death, his widow and minor children returned to Centre County to reside.

Goals of Search:
1.. To determine if the John Strong entry at Family Search is the father of Samuel Strong the father of William Adelbert Strong and our Strong Family. (Known as the Mifflin County, PA Strongs) [See: DNA Kits #6680, #16001 & 23314]

2.. To prove marriage of this John Strong to Gertrud Kaercher of Berks County

3.. Determine if the John Strong living in Bald Eagle Township, Centre County in 1810 is the same John Strong as the one in Family Search

4.. Determine if either of these are the son of James "Schrim" Strong of York County

  5.. Determine where they lived

“Hello Strong Descendants,

I was trying to find out more on our Samuel STRONG and I think I may have found a couple of IGI records for him 2 Male Birth entries for 16 Jul 1789 in Chanceford Twp., York, Pennsylvania each listing parents as John Strong and Grete Kercher

1 Male Christening on 27 Oct 1789 in Chanceford Twp., York, Pennsylvania with same parents and the one I already had Male birth about 1791 of Berks, Pennsylvania married to Sarah Strunk, abt 1816

The first 3 are the important ones as they give the possible parentage and an earlier birth date than we assumed but within 2 years of our dates.

The first entry does not have any dates on the father and mother, however the 2nd and 3rd entry has a birth date for John Strong of about 1757 of Chanceford Twp., York, Pennsylvania and the birth date for Grete Kercher of about 1761 of Chanceford Twp., York, Pennsylvania

I think this is almost the key to linking our Samuel to John Strong, the son of, the immigrant ancestor, James Strong, AKA Schim Strang of York County, Pennsylvania!! The only discrepancy is about a 5-8 year window as John's birth date is listed as between Nov 1763 and Apr 1765 with a baptism date of 25 Apr 1765

I have attached the webpage that I found at Family Search.org. If the page doesn't come through then just go there and enter the criteria of Samuel Strong and Pennsylvania

Your cousin,

Russell Strong”

4.      Contacted the gentleman posting this information about their DNA study.  As I suspected the DNA research they are doing is in the male line only and to implement a female line study would necessitate our finding two female descendants of Gertrud Kaercher who descend through two different daughters of hers or two lines from the mother.  This would be impractical for us to attempt at this time.

Alternative [Documentary] Search:

1.      Hans (Johannes) Michael Kaercher with his wife and at least 3 children immigrated to Pennsylvania on the Ship Nancy and Friendship  (some confusion as to whether or not this is two ships which totally carried 187 passengers or one ship).  Hans and his son Johan Martin Kaercher are listed as passengers over the age of 16.  Women and males under 16 years of age were not included on the manifest.   (Martin is sometimes referred to as Johan George Martin Kaercher.)

The son Martin eventually settled in Windsor Township, Berks County, Pa near  what is now Hamburg, PA.  A 1776 map of Berks county shows their residence  which is located directly north of Reading on what was then called the Centre  Turnpike.  In 1811 an actual turnpike was built which follows the same general  route from Reading to Sunbury.  This map may be viewed at:         httpt://sites.rootsweb.com/~paberks/graphics/BerksMap1776View3.jpg ; or you   can go to sites.rootsweb.com  and go to web-pages and follow through to the Berks County page and go to maps and you will see the 4 views listed.

He warranted 100 acres of land in Berks County on 28 April 1753.  This is  undoubtedly the land mentioned above.

In 1757 he was a witness to the will of Frederick Kieffer of Longswamp.  The other witness was Peter Delangh (this is important).

                        KIEFFER, FREDERICK, Longswamp.

Provides for wife Mary Catharin.
To son Peter, all my improvement and Farming implements. And pay to his bro. Barthol, sister Ann Elisabeth, sister Ann Mary and bro. Abraham £10 each and keep and clothe Abraham until he is 18.
Exr: wife Catharin.
Wit: Peter DELANGH and Martin KARCHER.
Translation.

He is shown on the Proprietary Tax Return for Longswamp Township, in 1767.    He is  listed as having 280 acres, 4 horses, 3 cattle, 2 sheep.  A very large  holding  at that time.

1775-1776 He served in the Revolutionary War.  I have not yet determined  whether he served in the active military or supplied good to the troops.  He is  listed as a Rev. War Veteran in the Berks County book listing soldiers buried at  Old St. Johns Church  Cemetery.  (haven't had time to check the archives)

St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hamburg, Berks County, Pa. Since June,          1901, the Hamburg charge has consisted of three congregations, namely, St.           John's, Hamburg; Zion's Perry township, and St. Paul's, Windsor township.

In 1773, a period when Hamburg was a wilderness and people worshiped in  private houses, a Martin Kercher, or Kearcher, donated a piece of land to be used    by the Lutheran and Reformed people as a place of worship. The first structure  was built of logs and was dedicated in 1790 the lower floor being used as a school   room and the upper as a place of worship. About a score of years later a larger  building was erected, with a weather vane in the shape of a fish, and its pulpit          fashioned like a tulip, which served until 1857, when a more spacious one took its place, and was burned to the ground in 1898. The present church was erected at   once and was ready for use early in 1899.

His will is dated 12 April 1785, proved 1 August 1787, he mentions being 67    years old.

Will of Martin Kaercher:  KARCHER, MARTIN, Windsor.

(Note: Martin KARCHER lived at what is now HamburgHamburg was once known as Karchertown.)

A Modern day map shows a large park at Hamburg named "Kaercher Creek Park.             http://www.bccl.org/parks/cwp/view.asp?a=1229&q=447541  This park is very close to  the site of the original Kaercher property if not on it.

According to the above reference and several references at Ancestry.COM son  Johan Martin  [Kaercher] married Elizabeth Schufert and had a number of children.  The    researchers at Ancestry.COM carry the lines further back but I didn't pay too   much attention to that until we make a positive connection to this line.

2.      Martin and Elizabeth [Kaercher] had daughter Gertraut Kaercher b. about 1753 according to the above document.  I would have thought that our ancestor would have been born after this and this birth date is given as "about" so she could have been born as late as 1761.  Several of Martin and Elizabeth's children were baptized at the Mertz Church but she is not one of them.  (At least I haven't found it so far.) However his will confirms a daughter, Gertraut.

3.      I could not find any further information on Gertraut except the reference Russell found linking her to John Strong.  I am taking a big leap of faith here and wondering if she died fairly young, possibly when Samuel was born.  I have found in the past when a line is difficult to follow and multiple children are not found, this is often the case.

 4.      Connection to John Strong of Bald Eagle township, Centre County:

The following is the chronology of Centre County, [Pennsylvania]:

1772 Northumberland County is formed from Bedford, Cumberland, Lancaster,   Berks, & Northampton.

1789 Mifflin County formed from Northumberland.  Upper Bald Eagle Township,  of Northumberland was known simply as Bald Eagle Township, while it was a  part of Mifflin.

1798 Centre Township was formed from Bald Eagle Township

1811 Centre County was formed from Mifflin, the name Upper Bald Eagle  Township was restored.

1839 - Clinton County was formed from Centre [County?].  That part of Upper Bald Eagle  which had not become part of Centre Township went with it.

John Strong was enumerated in Bald Eagle township, Centre County at the 1810 federal census.  His family consisted of:  1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male over 45, 1 female 16-26, 1 male over 45.   The over 45 male is apparently John and the over 45 female is presumed to be his wife.   The 16-26 male could be our Samuel who would be 21.  Whether or not the female 16-26 is Sarah, Samuel's wife or a sister is uncertain.  Since Samuel and Sarah's first child was not born until 1819, it would seem unlikely that they were married in 1810 and that the female is probably a sister.

John Strong of Centre County relationship to Strong of York:

I wondered if it was possible to link John Strong to another family in Centre County that would explain why he is in Centre County in 1810.

This link is through his grandmother's family.  Mary Magdalena Emenheiser is the daughter of Adam Emenheiser b. about 1723 in Germany immigrated to York County, PA.

Adam's son Johannes Emenheiser b. about 1757 in Windsor Township, York County died about 1832 in what is now Centre County, Pa.  s.

Son Christian married there in 1811.

Several of his children lived in Centre County, and left a large number of descendants there.  George and John were therefore living very near their uncle and a number of cousins.

There is also a link to Martin Kaercher's old friend Peter deLangh.  A number of descendants of Peter are living next to John Strong in 1810.  There are some inter-marriages with this family.  I have not found one as close as that of the Emenheisers but there may be one there.

From all of this we can presume:

John Strong, son of James [Strong] and Mary Magdalena Emenheiser, married Gertraud Kaercher, a daughter of Johan Martin  Kaercher of Berks County

They had son Samuel b. 1789 (baptism recorded at Chanceford, York County (I have not found this record yet - taken from Family Search).

From the early census we have eliminated essentially all those that could have been related to our family:

[Census of] 1790

1.      Jonathon Strong, Honeybrook. Chester County (see entry for 1800)

2.
John Strong, Manor Township, Lancaster County.  This family consists of 2 free white males of 16 & upwards including head of family, 1 free white male under 16 years, 1 free white female, 1 under the all other free person column.   This may be our John Strong.   His father owned  land called Manor Line.  Although James was in York County, it is possible that John stayed in Lancaster for a period.  I also have not done a thorough study of the land dividisons to localte Manor Line/Manor Lane at this time.

3.      Gregory Strong, Philadelphia

4.      Matthew Strong, Philadelphia, Mariner

5.      Elizabeth Strong, Washington, PA

6.
James Strong, Windsor York County.  3 males +16, 2 males -16, 4 free white females.  This is James "Schrim Strong."

 [Census of] 1800

1.
John Strong, Chester County,   Honey Brook, - this John Strong was born October 1762 in Icedale, Chester County, Pa and died there 10 October 1857.  He married Barbara Fox about 1790.   His father is John Strong.  He had a brother James and a sister Sallie.  His fathter is Jonathon from above.

2.      John Strong, Cuberland County, East Pennsboro  son of Enoch Strong and Sarah MeraughMarried Lydia Thomas.   He was born in Coventry, Ct. in 1755 descends from Elder John Strong.

3.      Martin Strong, Erie County, Waterford Twp.  Son of Timothy Strong and Abi Collins.  Descends from Elder John Strong.

4.      Nathaniel Strong, Greene County, Dunkard Twp.  A descentdant of the Chester Group.

5.      Francis Strong, Lycoming County, Nippenose Twp.

6.      Matthew Strong, Philadelphia County, Philadelphia City  A. mariner probably related to Francis.

7.      James Strong, Chanceford Twp, York County  (this is James "Schrim Strong)

8.      Adam Strong, York County, Hellam Township - son of James above

9.
James Strong, York County, Windsor Township - son of James above.

[Census of] 1810

1.
John Strong, Fayette County, Dunbar Township.  The same John Strong that was in Chester County Previously, wife Barbara Fox.

2.      George Strong, Centre County, Howard Township.  Presumed to be the brother of our John.  Wife Mary.  Later moved to New York State.  His descendants are the other Strong family in Saint Joseph County with our William.

3.      John Strong, Centre County, Bald Eagle Township,  Family consists of 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16 thru 25, 1 male over 45, 1 female 16-25, 1 male over 45.  Presumed to be the father of Samuel.

4.      Christian Strong, Berks County, Bern township.  Family consists of 1 male under 10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 2 females under 10, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44.  May be brother of Samuel (age a bit iffy).  Apparently did not stay in Berks County.  No further information on him.

If anyone can add or confirm any of this information, we would love to hear from you.

This family is also the family of most of the Strongs who settled in Miami, Darke, Shelby and Clark Counties in Ohio.
