PRELIMINARY AND CAUTIONARY NOTES:

This descendency Chart relating to the Stronges of Tynan Abbey, County Armagh, Ireland and the related THE CUMBRIA DATABASE and Strong of Carlisle Diocese, Cumberlandshire, HTML SPECULATIVE Descendency Chart have been constructed with the use of genealogical programs. Initially, in the time-frame 1988-1991, it was built using a DOS based program called Family History System, Copyright 1988, by Phillip E. Brown, Tallahassee, FL. Among other limitations at the time was a lack of memory space in which to store information. Some of the comments made then are "cryptic" now. In late 1998, the data was transferred to Ultimate Family Tree, Copyright 1997, Palladium Interactive, Inc. In late 2000, the data was again transferred to The Master Genealogist, Copyright 1999, Wholly Genes, Inc. The possibillity exists that data may have been lost or confused in the various tranfers. The Descendency Chart presented herein was created in The Master Genealogist, but has been modified thereafter by the author. Not all data available in the various sources used to create this descendency has been used. The descendency is speculative and probably incomplete. Because of the presentation of this genealogical data in this format, one has a tendency to accept it as "fact". NOTHING COULD BE MORE ERRONEOUS! Certain data from the microfilm Library of the Church of Latter Day Saints has been used. Original parish records have NOT been reviewed. Certain of the data has been enhanced through addition of information gleaned from the following sources:

1) The descendancy commences with a certain "Mathew Strong of Strabane and Clonleigh"; much of the details concerning the descendency were originally presented in Burke's, cited above.
As a cautionary note regarding the validity of the data reproduced from Burke's, and emphasizing the SPECULATIVE nature of the descendency presented here, I quote the following from a message sent by Bill Strong of Dunnville, Ontario in 1997:

I searched the web for info on Burke's and found an interesting page entitled "Errors to Beware in Burke's Peerage". According to this page, the genealogies in Burke's were often compiled in haste and sometimes with little regard for accuracy. Score one for Dave's theory.

The following is quoted from http://www.baronage.co.uk/bphtm-01/essay-7.html

"The Burkes were a family of genealogists and heralds who between 1826 and 1930 assembled a popular series of genealogical directories which can still be found on the shelves of many public libraries. The founder was John Burke, but his son Bernard, who endowed the books with institutional status, quickly overshadowed him. Sir Bernard had a long and scholastically contentious reign over their development. He loved romance and, although perhaps not actually a charlatan, was far too easily satisfied with palpable falsehood. He was a prolific and hasty writer in a field which demands disciplined scientific objectivity, but he flourished during a period in which genealogical interests became almost inseparable from snobbery, and he bequeathed some deplorable examples to his successors. He appeared to have no scruples in pandering to the popular hunger for fabulous mediaeval romanticism, and in the egregious tradition of the worst Tudor heralds many mendacious inventions were endorsed in his books. (He, too, was a herald at the College of Arms in London.)" (Emphasis Added by website editor)

"A few great scholars, among whom Round, Barron and Freeman were foremost, exposed the myths in a series of brilliant and witty essays, and a little later the scholastic reputation of Burke's was, albeit only partly, slowly rebuilt under the tutelage of Sir Bernard's son, Sir Henry Farnham Burke, Garter Principal King of Arms. But among historians the reputation of the Burke's books as repositories of fairy tales lingered for many years, and it was not until the nineteen-thirties that the later editors could begin their rehabilitation, a process which continued after the war and, as the errors described below indicate, was unfinished when the publishing company which still carried the name of Burke's Peerage went into liquidation. (The companies exploiting the 'Burke's Peerage' name today do so under a licence from three partners who bought the rights to the name from the liquidator, and although some of the advertisements promoting their products imply a continued corporate existence from 1826, the boast is not supported by the facts.)"

"The early issues of the Burke's Peerage directories contained a fairly large number of inexcusable myths. Later editors cleared most of them out, but the mammoth task of correcting all the careless errors, and compensating for the misunderstandings about the Peerage of Scotland and feudal titles, was never completed. Accordingly, although the later directories can be useful for many families, and can offer helpful clues for the research on many more, their data must be cross-checked with care."

OVERVIEW OF THE CUMBRIA DATABASE

This chart is a presentation of certain genealogical information concerning the descendents of Matthew Stronge or Strangg, who ancestral family seat is in County Armagh, Ireland. See Description of Tynan Abbey . A speculative discussion of the possible antecedents of Matthew Strong or Strangg appears in Strong of Carlisle Diocese, Cumberlandshire, HTML SPECULATIVE Descendency Chart. (See the sons of Edward Strangge of Rattenrow: John Strangge and James Strangge)

I. Matthew1 Stronge, (Strang). Per John Burke and Sir Bernard Burke, C.B., Burke's Peerage, Baronetage and Knightage, 105th edition, edited by Peter Townend, London: Burke's Peerage Limited 1970: 2564, s.v. Stronge:

"Mathew Strong, of Strabane, 1670, & Clonleigh, 1616 (sic), was warden of Lifford, Co.Donegal, 1713. Acquired a leasehold in County Londonderry from the corporation of Goldsmiths, & in 1689, in consideration of services in the Defense of Derry, obtained a renewal thereof. He also purchased lands in Counties Tyrone and Donegal."

For a background discussion, see: Matthew Stronge of Strabane

John R. Mayer speculated in "Strange of Balcaskie", 2nd Ed., 1996, that Matthew Stronge was actually born circa 1637, and that he was a descendant of "Strang of High Church", a Scottish lineage junior to that of Strange of Balcaskie.

Note, while it is not impossible, if born c.1637, he would have been young (16 or 17) to have fathered Edward, c.1654, and later James Stronge, c.1657, at Londonderry. It is the opinion of the present editor that Mathew Stronge was actually born c. 1616, and did live to be approximately 100 years old. Under the latter hypothesis, Matthew Stronge would have been about 38 when he fathered Edward, which seems more plausible.

JRM also gives the name of his wife as "Anne", without documentation, but see 'Burk's Peerage'; also see 'Armagh Clergy and Parishes', by Rev. James B. Leslie, (LDS film #897012 part 2).

A further description of the accomplishments of various descendants of Matthew Stronge may be found in John R. Mayer, "Strange of Balcaskie", 2nd Edition, Arapacana Press, San Francisco (1996), ISBN 0-9638665-5-9, at pages 201-216.

He married Anne (--?--). He was born circa 1616 at Clonleigh, Donegal? He lived in 1670 at Strabane, Tyrone, Ireland. He was attainted by decree of King James II's Irish Parliament c. 1688 for support of King William and Queen Mary. He participated in the defense of Derry, Londonderry, Ireland, 1689. Circa 1691 the Decree of Attainder was reversed by King WIlliam's Irish Parliament, Dublin, Ireland. He was Warden of Lifford, Donegal, Ireland, 1714. He died in 1716 at Lifford, Donegal?

A. Edward2 Stronge was born circa 1654 and christened 29 January 1654 at the Derry Cathedral, Templemore Parish, Derry, Ireland. See Irish Strong Data Base records #64,1496 &1488. He apparently died sometime after 1658 in Ireland, as no further record of him has been found.

B. Captain James2 Stronge. He was born c. 1657 and was christened on 14 May 1657 at Derry Cathedral, Templemore Parish, Londonderry. See Irish Strong Data Base Records #90, 1494, & 1497. He married Margaret Douglas in 1675 at Waterside? He died circa 1700. Per Burke's: "Capt. Strong of Croghan, Co.Donegal & Clonleigh, Sheriff of Derry 1682-3; attainted by King James II's Irish Parliament in 1689. Active in defense of Derry."

See Milligan, "History of the Seige of Londonderry, 1689", p.216-7: 'At one time a considerable portion of Waterside, Londonderry, belonged to Stronges...still including "Gobnascale."', a farm with orchards lying just outside the walls of the city. Captain James Stronge remained in the city throughout the siege, suffering among other things the indignity of being under fire from "bombs fired from Stronge's orchard on the night of June 4 (which) ploughed up the streets and broke down houses, so that there was no passing the streets or staying within doors".

He and his wife Margaret Douglas, had at least two children:

1. Isabella3 Stronge was born circa 1676 at Derry? She married Thomas Babbington circa 1695. She died in 1725.

OVERVIEW OF THE CUMBRIA DATABASE

2. Rev. John3 Stronge, was born circa 1678. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin (Sch. 1696); B.A. 1699; M.A.1702; ordained Aug.2, 1702. Served as a Vicar Choral of Armagh 1701-1709; Rector of Derryloran, County Tyrone 1709-1738. He acquired Tynan Abbey by marriage to grand-daughter of Hugh Echlin, (planter?) of Tynan. He married Ellinor Manson on 19 Oct 1711 at Tynan, Co.Armagh. Elinor Manson was daughter of Elizabeth Echlin and Captain James Manson. Rev.John Strong left a will which was dated 19 June 1742, and proved in the year of his death, 1744 at Tynan, Co.Armagh. In the will, he bequeathed lands to each of his four sons, and left an annuity of L30 to his daughter until her marriage, when she was to get L1000.

He and his wife Elinor had 4 sons & 1 daughter;
The first, eldest son, Rev. James Stronge left no children to survive him.
The second son, Matthew Stronge inherited Tynan Abbey and continued the "main" lineage of Tynan Abbey.
The third son, William Strong , may have fathered a line of Strongs in County Monaghan.
The fourth son, John, may be identified as John Strong of Armagh and Carlisle.
The daughter, Mary Strong, married a rector and lived in County Monaghan.

a) Rev. James4 Stronge. Per John Bernard Burke, "The Seats and Arms of the Noblemen and Gentlemen of G.B. and Ireland", (1854), p.19-20: "Tynan Abbey was built by Rev. James Stronge, 1750, on the site of an older mansion, and has been considerably added to and improved...". See a View of Tynan Abbey. Per Leslie, "Armagh Clergy...", p.434: Rev.James Strong was curate of Tynan 1739-1767. He died unmarried. He was born circa 1712 at Tynan, Co.Armagh? He died circa 1767 at Tynan, Co.Armagh.

b) Matthew4 Stronge. Mayor of Liverpool 1768-9; m. Elizabeth, Daughter of Samuel Powell, of Stannage, and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas, last Lord Folliot. Per Burke. But see Discussion of Ffolliot for confusion factor re identity of "last Lord Folliot" and his supposed daughter "Elizabeth"... this may be one of the places where the above cautionary note re Burke's applies. There is some discontinuity in the time period involved, as well.

He apparently became owner of Tynan Abbey upon the death of his unmarried older brother, Rev. James Stronge, c.1767. He was born circa 1714. He married Elizabeth Powell in 1749. He was between 1768 and 1769 Mayor, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. He died circa 1780 at Liverpool or Tynan Abbey?, England or Ireland?

(2) Ellinor5 Stronge married John Blackburne. She was born circa 1752. She died in Jul 1842 at Wavertree Hall, Lancaster, England.

c) Captain William4 Stronge. Per Leslie, "Armagh Clergy and Parishes", William, the 4th son, was born circa 1718. He died sometime after 1742. Leslie states that he was a Captain in the army. Nothing more is said. It is entirely possible he survived the assumed date of death shown here, and he MAY be the ancestor of a line of Strongs from County Monaghan which claim to be descended from an army Captain. See the lengthy discussion re the Strongs of BallyBay, Co. Monaghan reproduced from a privately published booklet by William L. Strong, "History and Genealogy of the Strong Family of Medonte Township, Ontario, Canada". Dunnville, Ontario: 1989. Edition 1; and see DNA Note#11.

d) John4 Stronge possibly of Carlisle, Cumberlandshire. He was born circa 1720. He died after 1746. Per Leslie, "Armagh Clergy and Parishes", (1911): John Stronge was the 3rd son of Reverend John Stronge and died unmarried. He apparently was among the heirs to his father, so must have survived him. Query where Leslie got his information?

Contrary to the information appearing in Burke (see again the cautionary note above regarding validity of information appearing in Burke's) and Leslie, it appears this John Stronge may possibly be the ancestor of a line of Strongs commencing with a certain John Strong, b. Co. Armagh, Ireland and removed to Cumberlandshire where he died c. 1783, and is buried in the Churchyard of St. Cuthbert's Cathedral, Carlisle. See information received from Marie V. Strong, widow of a descendant from the Carlisle, Cumberland, lineage, and from Paul Arnold, Toronto, Ontario, another descendant.

Note the reference above to his brother, Matthew Stronge, Mayor of Liverpool circa 1768-69. While it remains speculation at this point, it is surmised that the brothers Matthew Stronge and John Stronge were both drawn back to Cumbria... whether by family ties, business interests, property holdings, or otherwise is not presently known. Certain speculations regarding the ties that bound them both to Cumbria will be presented in the Strong of Carlisle Diocese, Cumberlandshire, HTML SPECULATIVE Descendency Chart; and see DNA Note#11.

e) Mary4 Stronge married Rev. Arthur Benson, a Rector in County Monaghan. She was born circa 1722. She died circa 1780.
