This web site was developed jointly by Don Press and Paul Fair. Paul Fair, can trace his ancestors back to Christopher Fehr, Jr. Whereas Gini Fair Press (and Don Press, husband of) can trace her ancestors back to Johannes Heinrich Fehr, brother of Christopher, Jr.
The purpose of the web site is to stimulate a dialogue among Fehr/Fair descendants of Christopher Fehr, Sr. It is a work in progress and suggestions for improvements/additions are welcomed.
We recently found a story about Conrad Fair (third son of Jacob Fehr and grandson of Christoph and Elizabeth Euchin Fehr) and his descendants, written by Marvin L. and Rachel Fair in May 1974. It has been edited by Paul Fair and is available at CONRAD FAIR Descendants
After a 10 year search, I finally located the hometown of Johann Christopher Fehr, our emigrant ancestor. He was born on March 3, 1730 in schelbronn, Oberamt Pforzheim (formerly Oberamt Maulbronn until 1806), Germany. I found his hometown through a German website offering surname research. My contact in Germany also provided three generations of Christopher's ancestors, with the earliest coming from Switzerland. You can examine our Fehr/Fair ancestral file at rootsweb by going to Fair Family If you are interested, you can read of my long quest by clicking on Christopher Fehr and reading my notes after you get into the Fair Family.
It is noted that the Fehr family, after moving from Pennsylvania to Maryland in the late 1700s, changed the spelling of their name from Fehr to Fair in the early 1800s. Of interest, Jacob Fehr, son of Christopher and Maria Barbara Fehr, is probably the first to Anglicize the family name to Fair, according to J. Lee Price of Lawrenceville, Georgia. The reasons for this name change are lost in history but it is noted that there were many English Fairs in the vicinity of Taneytown, west of Westminster. Perhaps our Fehrs tired of having to explain that their name was spelled differently than those Taneytown Fairs to the tax collector!!!
A major facet of this web site is a short history of Christopher Fehr and his family, beginning with Christopher's preparations for and travel to Philadelphia. It is a mixure of fact and conjecture inasmuch as no one took the time to take an oral history from ole Chris. This most interesting story can be found at The Story of Christopher Fehr
Christopher's son, John Fehr, married Mary Lind. No one has been able to locate a Lind family. Recently a will was foumd for Michael Funderlind, which mentions Mary, now wife of John Fair. We have be unable to positively trace the Funderlind Family ancestors. Perhaps you can help us. See The Funderlind Family
