The Story

…of Ann's ancestors, their descendants and the times they lived in. Tom
and I have been researching their history for the last few years. We have
slowly built up a picture of my ancestors and their lives.
In the 19th Century they appear mainly as silk weavers in Bethnal Green, then a very poor but rapidly expanding community on the North East of London, England. Bethnal Greeen had a large population of silk weavers who had moved out from the main centre of Spitalfields. The rest are from various parts of London, mainly the North East, with just one ancestor (Eliza Benham) born in Hampshire in the South of England. The map on the left shows the area. For a larger view just click on the map; this will also let you zoom in and see much more detail. When you have finished, you can click on the Back button on your browser to return to this page.
Benham Collingwood Dormer Gross Horne Humphreys Heelas Richards Interested in one of the names? Just click on the arrowpointing to that name and you will be taken straight to the main page for that family. Or you can click on the My Families link. Then choose the area you would like to visit. There's a full description of each area on the main family page. As you browse through the family pages, do let us know of any connections you find. If you move to My Ancestors section, you will find a tree showing their names and dates in different formats. What's New! Steven Evans of New Zealand writes about his DORMER ancestors from London but unfortunately no connections to ours. You may be interested in his Evans and Devine Family Tree on Rootsweb's WorldConnect Pat Frykberg emails us (also from New Zealand) about her HORNE research, but sadly again no connections, more than made up for by a wonderful DORMER story from her childhood. A big thank-you to all from the Freepages-Help list at Rootsweb who took time to review these pages and point out where they needed further work. Welcome to Yvonne Foster of Victoria, Australia who has been added to the list of DORMER researchers. She has DORMER ancestors from Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England. We have also heard from Pam DORMER of New Zealand who is in touch with other DORMER researchers out there. They are still trying to track down their English ancestors. Looking Forward We have a few more loose ends to tie up on the DORMER research side, then we plan to move on to some of the other lines. Probably the HEELAS line first. This is taking the line of least resistance; HEELAS is probably the rarest of the names so will be easiest to research. Maybe. So any of you out there looking for HEELAS, do let us know and maybe we can coordinate our research. We also have some pictures to scan in - an opportunity to check out the USB bus in the computer... |
