JOHN DRUCE (BORN 1815)

John (b. 15 October 1815) was the eldest son of John (a weaver of Butts Frome) and Mary Willcox. He was baptised at St John's Church on 26 May 1819 on the same day as his younger brother William.

John was a shoemaker by trade. He married Caroline Tucker (daughter of Reuben Tucker, a weaver of Vallis Way Frome) on 14 May 1842 at Badcox Lane Meeting House. The Baptist Minister who conducted the marriage was Charles James Middleditch in the presence of John Wilcox and Samuel Palmer. The registrar was John Brown.

John and Caroline had two children, namely, Emma (born 1843) and Elizabeth (born 1850). According to the 1851 Census, the family lived in Welshmill Lane where John was a boot and shoe maker and Caroline was a shoe binder. John died relatively young at 45 years and was buried at Holy Trinity Church on 10 March 1861. The parish register records him as having lived at Cowards Batch. In fact, his elder daughter still lived at Cowards Batch in 1871 as evidenced by the Census records. His widow Caroline and younger daughter Elizabeth, however, lived in the High Street, Caroline being still a shoe binder and Elizabeth a machinest and boot maker.
