SMARDON/SMEARDON FAMILY of NEWFOUNDLAND

The family has been traced back to Thomas Smeardon born about 1772 in St. John's, Newfoundland. Family members have been located in several places in Newfoundland, but most were living on Belle Isle and the Burin Peninsula in the 1800's. Some of the family moved to England and Australia in the mid 1800's while others moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia in the 1880's. Several different spellings of the name have been noted including Smeardon, Smardom, and Smerdon. The above picture is of St John the Baptist Anglican Cathedral in St. John's, where most of the children of Thomas Smeardon were baptised.
