The Bannister Family

of Talladega County, Alabama


Edward Wesley Bannister  (sometimes spelled "Banister") and his bride, Lucy Jane Newsom, were in Talladega County, Alabama when the census was taken in 1840.  They had not been married long, and the census reflected that they had no children at that time.  When I located their family bible in the late 1970's, I realized that they had had a small son, William, who had died just a few months before the census was taken.

One of my most exciting discoveries in recent years has been the determination that Lucy Jane Newsom was the daughter of Thomas Turner Newsom and his first wife, Nancy Mitchell. A clue that had always been present was the notation of the birth dates of two Newsoms in the Bannister family Bible. These two names and birth dates matched perfectly with those of two of Thomas Turner Newsom's sons - James Garrison Newsom (born 13 July 1820) and Andrew Thomas Newsom (born 22 October 1829). These two men are listed as "J. G." and "A. T." Newsom in the Bannister Bible.

Additional research led me to the War of 1812 pension records of Lettice Ritchie Newsom, the second wife of Thomas Turner Newsom (and the mother of Andrew Thomas Newsom and several other children). In her pension records, Lettice lists Thomas' first wife as Nancy Mitchell and indicates that she died in November 1824. Since our Lucy was born 8 November 1821, Nancy Mitchell Newsom was definitely her mother!

Edward Wesley BANNISTER was born 2 Feb 1819 in South Carolina. He died 7 Aug 1917 in Alabama and was buried 8 Aug 1917 in Mashburn Cem., Rural Oxford, Talladega County, Alabama. Edward married Lucy Jane NEWSOM about 1838. Lucy was born 8 Nov 1821 in South Carolina. She died 1880/1900 in Alabama. They had the following children:

  1. William A. BANNISTER was born 30 Apr 1839 in Talladega County, Alabama. He died 14 Apr 1840 in Talladega County, Alabama. He was dead prior to the 1840 Talladega County, Census, which lists his parents without children.
  2. Mary Jane Elizabeth BANNISTER was born 2 May 1841 and died 12 Feb 1912.
  3. James Thomas BANNISTER was born 11 Nov 1843 and died 14 Feb 1924.
  4. John Cowan BANNISTER was born 22 May 1845 and died 1923.
  5. Susan E. BANNISTER was born 7 Nov 1847.
  6. General Newton BANNISTER was born 10 Oct 1849 and died 22 Apr 1933.
  7. Docia Caroline BANNISTER was born 25 Dec 1851 and died between 1910 and 1920.
  8. Mattye E. BANNISTER was born 16 Feb 1854.
  9. Missouri Dorense T. C. BANNISTER was born 11 May 1856 and died 15 Mar 1936.
  10. Jordan Wesley BANNISTER was born 8 Dec 1858.
  11. Turner Willson BANNISTER was born 17 Jun 1861 and died 10 Feb 1952.
  12. Julyan Malisia BANNISTER was born 4 Jun 1862 in Talladega County, Alabama. She died in 1867 in Alabama of injuries sustained in a fall down a hill.
  13. Charles L. BANNISTER was born 12 Apr 1864 and died Apr 1936.
  14. Ellen C. Matildy BANNISTER was born Nov 1866 in Talladega County, Alabama.
