The Mars Hill Cemetery is located north of Verda, Louisiana on Mars Hill
Baptist Church Cemetery Road. It is approximately 3 miles off the main road
and is very well maintained.
When visiting there in March 2000, we found the graves of our grandmother's
first husband, John F. Vercher, his third wife, Lou Collins Vercher, their
son Tarleton and his wife, and their daughter Gladys (Brady) and her husband.
We then journeyed down the road a few miles until we found the Sumerfield
Church, where John's parents were buried. It is probably less than 10 miles
from Mars Hill, but it is in Grant Parish and is very close to LA 71.
If you visit this site, the cemetery is divided into two parts, and Jean
Baptiste Beloni Vercher and Azorine Moreau Vercher are buried in the section
that is south of the church, in the far left corner of the cemetery.
Their graves have an iron fence around them. There are actually three tombstones
- two for Beloni (one is a Confederate military tombstone). I took four photos
in an attempt to get a good picture.
The cemetery is well maintained, but these tombstones are very aged and hard
to read.
