The Dunton's

Four Generations

Hiram Dunton

Hiram Dunton son of James Dunton and Polly Patterson, was born March 10, 1820 Hampden, Maine; died January 21, 1897 in Hampden. Hiram was a principal in the Hampden silver mining venture which was capitalized at over $1,000,000 in the 1880's. The mines were wiped out when they hit "a vein of water" and the price of silver plumetted in 1888, a double hit from which the company could not recover. Hiram married Louisa Pierce of Hampden in 1842. The marriage was officiated by Rev. Hannibal Hamlin later a well known New England politician who was vice president during Lincoln's first term. Hiram was my great-great grandfather.
