History of Cornelis Maessen Van Buren
by H. C. Peckham
The Van Buren Descendants
of Cornelis Maessen and Catalyntje Martense
#1 - Cornelis Maessen married 1635 or 1636 Catalyntie Martense; both died and were buried the same day at Papskanee in 1648.
Issues:
#2 - Hendrick Cornelissen, First son of Cornelis and Catalyntie,
born Jan 30, 1637.
Hendrick was born on board ship Rensselaerswyck according to the Captains log of the voyage. Not much is known about
Hendrick, but he remained in the neighborhood of the paternal home. He and his wife, Elizabeth Van Slyck, were members of the Dutch Reformed Church at Albany in 1683.
#3 - Marten Cornelissen, Second son of Cornelis and Catalyntie,
born 1638 or 1639(?)
Died November 13, 1703, married Marytjie Quackenbosch about 1662. Marten owned a house, barn, etc, in Bethlehem, Albany Co., and sold it in 1662. In May 1693, he married a second time, Tanneke Adams,
widow of Pieter Pieterson Winne.
#4 - Maas Cornelissen, Third son of Cornelis and Catalyntie,
born 1643(?).
Died November 27, 1704; married 1682 or 1683, Josine Janse Gardiner. For some reason known only to himself and not recorded, Maas took as his surname the name of Bloemendael, and the large and
well-known Bloomingdale family of the present time, are descendants of this third son of Cornelis Maessen.
Note: Since the surname has predominately become Bloomingdale, no follow-up on the descendants are published at this web site. For more information, please refer to the book published by H. C. Van
Buren Peckham,
History of Cornelis Maessen Van Buren, (c)1913. A reprint is available for purchase from the
Higginson Book Company.
#5 - Styntji Cornelisse (Christina), fourth child of Cornelis and Catalyntie, born 1645(?).
Died November 26, 1729; married 1665, Dirk Wesselsin Ten Broeck. This couple had 11 children.
#6 - Tobias Cornelissen, Fifth child of Cornelis and Catalyntie,
born 1647(?).
If he married he seems to have had no issue and there are no records relating to him after 1662, therefore it is supposed he died while a mere youth.
