Picture of Elizabeth Christina Spanswick My story starts with my great grandmother Elizabeth Christina Spanswick (photograph on the left) born at 6 Daniel's Row Mile End London on 16th Jul 1867. She was the youngest of three daughters of Francis William Spanswick a Pocket Book Maker (see below) and Susannah Mary Cuttriss. The eldest daughter was Sarah Ann Spanswick born in 1860 at Cripplegate London and the middle daughter was Mary Spanswick born c1863. Susannah, Elizabeth Christina's mother is believed to have died soon after the birth of Elizabeth Christina in 1867 (to date I haven't traced the death certificate). Her father Francis William sent Elizabeth Christina away to be looked after by a German couple but things didn't go to plan. The foster family put young Elizabeth Christina "on the stage" as a singer. When her father found out he took her back immediately.

Picture of William Henry Middleton By the 1881 Census the family appears at 1 Goswell Terrace Clerkenwell, Sarah and Mary are both Purse Makers while Lizzie aged 13 is unemployed. Two years latter in 1883 Sarah Ann married James Joseph Tiley at St Mark Old Street.
And on 27th Oct 1895 Elizabeth Christina married my great grandfather William Henry Middleton (photograph on the left) a Post Office Letter Sorter at St James Pentonville in Clerkenwell London. Elizabeth Christina died in 1950 in Ealing and was buried at Ealing and Old Brentford Cemetery.

His parents were Roger Spanswick a Silversmith and Mary Ann Elizabeth Dugard who had married in 1817 at St Thomas Southwark. Francis's father Roger died aged 50 in 1845 and Mary Ann his mother died 1849 c56 years of age. Francis William appears in the 1841 census with his parents an Aunt Elizabeth , his brother James and sister Matilda and again in the 1851 census apprenticed to William Crouch a Pocket Book Maker of St Giles Cripplegate St Bartholomew London. He married Susannah Mary Cuttriss 25th December 1859 at St Matthias Church Bethnal Green. He died aged 73 in 1910 in Clerkenwell.

Picture of Letter from Matilda Websdale nee Spanswick Matilda Ann Spanswick - Francis William Spanswick's youngest sister was born in 1829 and baptised 1831 at St Peters Walworth. On 31st Dec 1853 she married at Addington near Croydon Surrey a Labourer called William Websdale. They had five children all boys and emigrated to Canada from where in 1887 my greatgrandfather received a letter describing life in Ontario (see photograph on left). And the puzzle of letter from an MA Websdale opening "Dear Brother" was one of the sparks which ignited my interest in my ancestors.
