Sadly this does not appear to be the case, the Spanswick surname is indeed a very rare in Scotland, but the earliest record so far places it at Leith in 1879.

SPANSWICK - At 89 Iona Street, Leith, on the 13th inst (nee Josphine Dickson), the wife of HERBERT THOMAS SPANSWICK, of a daughter.



The Scotsman 19th Dec 1930
FATAL MOTOR ACCIDENT

A woman named Mrs. Spanswick, 13 Drumbrae Road, Edinburgh, was killed and a neighbour injured in a motor accident between six and seven o'clock last night in Queensferry Road at the Junction of Drumbrae Road. Mrs. Spanswick and Mrs Ferguson, 4 Drumbrae Road, were crossing from the south to the north side of Queensferry Road, when they were knocked down by a motor car which was proceeding westward. They were removed to a house nearby and a Blackhall doctor was summoned. Mrs. Spanswick died before medical attention could be given, and Mrs. Ferguson was removed to the Royal Infirmary, where she was detained suffering from injuries to the back.

* The lady killed in the Accident above was Jessie Swayne Spanswick wife of Francis Isaac Spanswick (married 1902).

SPANSWICK - At Hospital, EDINBURGH, on 24th January 1943, GERTRUDE ANNIE WOOD, beloved wife of FRANCIS I. SPANSWICK 46, Drum Brae North, Barnton. Service at Warriston Crematorium on Wednesday, at 2.30 PM to which all friends are invited (No mourning, no flowers, by request).

CONFECTIONER FINED �20 - An Edinburgh confectioner who, it was stated, by overstating the number of personal points in his possession in returns to the Ministry of Food, would have obtained almost half a ton of confectionery, was fined a total of �20 by Sheriff Jameson, at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday. He was William Spanswick, 12 Niddrie Mains Road, and he admitted on two occasions - March 31 and April 28 - recklessly made false statements to the Ministry of Food regarding the number of confectionery points in his possession. He pleaded guilty through an agent.
