My Cuttriss Links

On the 25th December 1859 my great great grandparents Susannah Mary (Massy) Cuttriss and Francis William Spanswick were married at St Matthias Church, Bethnal Green, London.

Family Bible For several family lines no documents providing a link to the past have survived , so I'm very fortunate to have a two folded pages , possibly torn from a family bible, listing the baptism of Susannah Cuttriss and her brothers and Sisters (see left)dating from 1837.

The survival of the list of births and baptism's certainly helped with my research.Susannah Cuttriss was the third of seven children (so far traced)born to James and Susannah Cuttriss nee Gotts. Although James and Susannah were married the 5th March 1836 at Ely Holy Trinity in Cambridgeshire they moved quickly to Westminster, London where at 49, Orchard Street their first child William Cuttriss was born on the 21st August 1837. And its clear from the "paper trail" provided by the various birth certificates (and death certificates) the family kept moving from one lodging house to another in the Westminster area.

Their first child William Cuttriss died young on the 31st October 1839 at 46, Great Peter Street, Westminster. But born the following month on 11th November 1839, at 95 St Peter Street, was Sarah Alice Cuttriss . And after a gap Susannah Mary Cuttriss (my great, great grandmother) was born 3rd March 1842,followed by James Cuttriss, born 8th December 1844 and Elizabeth Jane Cuttriss, born 10th March 1847 all at 6,Horseferry Road. The last two children ,Mary Ann Cuttriss (1849-1850) and Martha Cuttriss (1851-1853)also died young.

Sarah Alice Cuttriss (who's occupation was straw bonnet maker), Susannah's elder sister married James Bowler a bootmaker 5th July 1859 at St John the Evangelist, Westminster. And her sister and brother in law acted as the witnesses to Susannah's own wedding later that year. From the 1881 Census Index I am aware Sarah Alice and James had (at least) six children (all boys): Robert Bowler (born c.1860); Frederick Bowler (born c.1865); James Bowler (born c.1867); Edward Bowler (born c.1870); Thomas Bowler (born c.1874); and Albert Bowler (born c.1881).

The origin and link to my "family" of the Cuttriss Trade Card below has yet to be unravelled. It might have belonged to one Robert Cuttriss a "dealer" , father of James Cuttriss a printer who married May 8th 1859 at St John's Church, Manchester to Ann Price. James and Ann had at least two children, Robert Young Cuttriss born in 1860 St Andrews Sq., Manchester, and James Alfred Cuttriss born in Ancoats in 1867. Further research has shown Robert Young Cuttriss married Jennette Holdsworth at Chorlton Register Office in 1882.

I have yet to locate the family in 1841 Census, but I had more luck in 1851 where (due to the birth certificates of Mary Ann and Martha Cuttriss I was able to trace the family (and three lodgers)to the address of 48, Marsham Street, Westminster.

James Cuttriss was baptised at Ely Holy Trinity, Cambridgeshire, 9th December 1813 he was the eldest child of Jeremiah and Sarah Cuttriss nee Lupson. Having settled in Westminster, on the 8th January 1848 he became a member of the "National Charter Association" (see copy of card on the below).

Chartist Membership Card

Another document which survived is dated 14th December 1855 and was notification from the 'Chancery' of James interest in the National Land Company (which had been set up by the National Charter Association), the amount was 3 1s 6d.

James Cuttriss died in Charing Cross Hospital on the 19th February 1859 from the death certificate I know that an inquest took place on 23rd February 1859 but sadly no coroners records for Westminster in that year have survived, and as yet I havn't made a search through London newspapers for more details. Susannah , James widow died not long after on 26th May 1862 at the Workhouse, Earls Court, Kensington.

Jeremiah Cuttriss was baptised 11th April 1794 at Ely Holy Trinity, Cambridgeshire, and married Sarah Lupson at Ely Holy Trinity on 27th January 1813. Jeremiah's occupation (from the baptism's of his twelve children in Ely) was that of Labourer and Milkman.

James Cuttriss (above) my great, great, great grandfather was Jeremiah and Sarah's eldest child and like all his younger brothers and sisters was baptised at Ely Holy Trinity. The family was as follows :James Cuttriss(a Milkman, baptised 1815); George Cuttriss (living at Bull lane Ely in the 1851 Census, baptised 1816); Edward Cuttriss (1818-1834); Mary A Cuttriss (baptised 1820); William Cuttriss (baptised 1822); Jermiah Cuttriss (baptised 1824); Henry Cuttriss (baptised 1823); Elizabeth Cuttriss (baptised 1829; Sarah Cuttriss (baptised 1830); and two infants both called Samuel Cuttriss (1830-1830)and (1831-1836).

So far I've only traced two other children of Jeremiah and Sarah. Firstly John Cuttriss the Milkman, traced in the 1851 Census, married to "Mary Ann" had at least five children: Sarah Ann Cuttriss (born c.1843); Jeremiah Cuttriss (born c.1844); Elizabeth Cuttriss (born c.1847); Edward Cuttriss (born c.1843);and Samuel Cuttriss (born c.1851).

Secondly William Cuttriss had at least two children: Edward William Cuttriss (born c.1846); and James Lupson Cuttriss (born c.1848).

Given the family ties to Ely, I'm sure a detailed search of the Victorian Registers of Holy Trinity Church would tie down quite a few more of the family.

I've managed to trace one further generation back, to the father of Jeremiah Cuttriss, one James Cuttriss. On January 5th 1833 the will of James Cuttriss a Farmer was proved at Ely. In it he mentions "I give and devise the said twelve acres in Middle fen aforesaid unto Sarah Cuttriss (Widow of my late son Jeremiah Cuttriss) and her assigns for the Term of her natural Life (provided she so long continues a Widow and unmarried but not otherwise)". The will also helpfully stated that the testator died on the 25th October 1832 and in the register of Ely Holy Trinity there is a burial for James Cuttriss with an age given of 79 years, which puts his birth at c.1752. If correct, given the age James would have been when Jeremiah was born there must be a possibly that James had married before (although there is no indication in the will mentioned above).

So as ever in family history, the story is somewhat incomplete, only more research on Ely records, at Cambridgeshire Record Office is likely to resolve the ancestry of my branch of the Cuttriss's of Ely.

Please Note: The Cuttriss surname appears at Cuttress, Cutress and Cutriss in the Ely 1851 Census.
