Saturday, July 24th, 1731




LONDON July 24.

Tuesday Morning Mr.RICHARD FRANCKLIN was taken into Custody by several of his Majesty's Messengers, at his House in Russel-street, Covent-Garden, for the late Pamphlet call'd, An Answer to one Part of a late infamous Libel, intitled, Remarks on the Craftsman's Vindication of his two Honourable Patrons, in which the Character and Conduct of Mr.P. is fully vindictated; in a Letter to the most noble Author, &c. and was carried to Hampton-Court to be examined.
Late on Saturday Night the Sessions ended at the Old Baily, when the eight following Malefactors received Sentence of Death, viz. Thomas Granger, alias Corfield, for stealing 38 Guineas from his Master, Benjamin Hussam, Esq.; John Davies, for two Robberies on the Highway, and for Murder. John Drinkwater, Bernard Fink, William Yates, alias Warrington, John Armstrong, and Nathaniel Lamprey, for several Street Robberies. Also Thomas Clarkson, for robbing Edward Philips, on the Highway.
Three were burnt in the Hand, and thirty two order'd for Transportation.

The Vessel that carried the Earl of Orrery from Holy Head to Ireland was beclam'd for some Days; so that his Lordship with the other Passengers, was driven to the utmost Extremities for Provisions and Water. The Master sent the Earl's Cook in the Boat to the Welch Coast; but a Wind at length springing up the Vessel happily arriv'd at Rings End.

Yesterday three Smugglers, hand-cuff'd and fetter'd, were brought up from Ipswich by the Under Sheriff of Suffolk, and about fifteen Officers carryning Fire-Arms; being brought before the Lord Chief Baron Reynolds, they were committed by his Lordship to the Fleet Prison; and Mr.Richardson, his Lordship's Tipstaff, carried them thither accordingly, having kindly taken off their Irons as soon as they came under his Charge.

Last Tuesday Se'nnight came on a Trial at Westminster, before the Right Hon.the Lord Chief Justice Raymond, wherein John Wicker, Esq.; Lord of the Manor of Stepney, was Plaintiff, and John Franks, a Carpenter in Spittlefields, Defendant, on an Action of Debt for Recovery of an Amerciament set upon the Defendant by the Court Leet of the said Manor, for refusing to pay Obedience to a Summons for his appearing to do Suit and Service at the said Court; when a Verdict pass'd in Favour of the Plaintiff, with Costs of Suit.

A few Days since came on the Election of a Town Clerk for the City of Bristol, ( a Place worth about �700 per. Ann.) in the Room of Henry Blaake, Esq; deceased; when William Cann, Esq; Barrister at Law, was unanimously chosen.

Monday between Two and Three in the Afternoon, a Pitch-Pot which was boyling on a Boat between the Harbin, Captain Crookenden, and the Charming Mary, Capt.Bell, off Olyphant Stairs, Rotherhith, took Fire, and the Flame was convey'd to the Ships. The Charming Mary was cut loose, and fell down with the Tide to Hanover Hole, where she was entirely burnt, as was a Snow lately arrived from the West Indies; a Ship, one Ketteridge, Master, was very much burnt, as was the Hanover, Capt.Kitchingman, just arrived from Norway whose Cargo had taken Fire between Decks, and about eight in the Evening' twas doubtful whether she could be preserved. Many Ships received Damage in their Masts, &c. but the Seafaring People, by their timely Assistance, prevented farther Damage.

Wednesday Night when the Company of Comedians at the Theatre in the Hay-Market was going to perform the Fall of Mortimer, the High Constable, with several Petty Constables, came with a Warrant from several Justices of the Peace, to seize Mr.Mullet, who play'd the Part of Mortimer, and the rest of the Performers; but they all made their Escapes.

Wednesday Mr.Alderman Barber, attended by the Common Council Men of his Ward, went from House to House to collect Money for the poor Sufferers by the late Fires at Blandford and Tiverton; and we hear the Contributions from the Inhabitants of the said Ward were generally handsome and generous.

Tuesday at the Quarter Sessions for the County of Surrey, held at St.Margaret's-Hill, Southwark, several Fugitives for Debt were discharged; and the said Sessions is farther adjourned to the sixth of August next.

Rob. Last Saturday Mr.John Fielder of Esher in Surrey, was attack'd by two Highwaymen at Saint George's Hill near the said Place, both mask'd, one on a grey Horse, the other on a bay, who robbed him of ten Pounds.

Mar. Tuesday Morning John Francklin of Wysbych, Esq; was married at Finchley Church to Miss Foster of Barfort near Bedford, a young Lady of �20,000 Fortune.- Mr.Samuel Chorley, of Fleet-street, and eminent dealer in China, to Miss Perry, an agreeable young Gentlewoman in that Neighbourhood.
Dead. Last Saturday Morning died Sir Walter Yonge, of Culliton, in Devonshire, Bart. First Commissioner of the Customs; and is succeeded in Dignity and Estate by his only Son, (now) Sir William Yonge, Bart. Knight of the Honourable Order of the Bath, one of the Lords of the Treasury, and Member of Parliament for Honiton in Devonshire.- Mr.Holland, Chaplain to the Right Hon.the Lord Weymouth, Rector of Sutton, Wilts.- Mr.Crokatt, a Mercer in Ludgate-Hill.- The Lady Baltimore, Mother of the present Lord Baltimore.

N.B. The Account we gave in our Last of Mr.Atkinson, the Man Midwife in Bow-lane being robb'd, is intirely false and groundless.

Lately arrived from FRANCE,

Has brought with him a Parcel of excellent Clarets, both old and new, of the best Growths, which he sells from �36 to �45 per Hogshead. He is to be heard of every Day from Ten in the Morning to Three in the Afternoon, either at Garraway's in Exchange-Alley, or at the Goldsmith's Coffee-House, in Bail-Alley, Lombard-street, near the Vault where the Wines are lodged.

Off MARTIN COMMON, in the County of SURREY.

A Bay GELDING, 13 Hands high, a small Blaze in his Forehead, Switch Tail, a black Lift down his Back, two Splints, and seven Years old last Grass. Whoever brings him to Mr.Joyce, at the White Hart, Mitcham, or gives Notice so that he may be had again, shall have a Guinea Reward and no Questions asked.
